Pinarello partners with TQ on updated electric bike range
Pinarello has updated its Nytro electric bike range, which is now designed around TQ’s HPR50 motor system.
The Nytro is available in electric road bike and electric gravel bike options, as well as one electric hybrid bike model, which Pinarello calls an all-road bike.
The brand has designed separate framesets for the Nytro and Nytro Gravel, with the Nytro Allroad sharing the Gravel’s frameset.
TQ’s HPR50 electric bike motor and battery is claimed to be one of the quietest and most compact systems on the market, with an increasing number of brands speccing the system. This includes Trek, Scott, BMC and Simplon. The HPR50 delivers up to 50Nm of torque and up to 300W of power.
Pricing starts from £6,900 / $7,800 / €8,000 for the Nytro Gravel E5, rising to a heady $13,000 / €13,500 (GBP N/A) for the Nytro E9.
The lightest mid-level assist electric road bike?
Pinarello claims the Nytro E9 is the lightest mid-level assist electric road bike on the market at 11.4kg in an unspecified size.
The Scott Solace eRide 10 comes in close at 11.8kg, also in an unspecified size. Trek’s Domane+ SLR 9 eTap is heavier still at a claimed 12.15kg in a size 56cm.
The Nytro and Nytro Gravel E9 and E7 models are constructed using Toray T900 carbon fibre, which Pinarello says is “the ultimate in terms of stiffness and vibration absorption”.
The E5 models step down to Toray T700 carbon fibre, which is a little heavier but said to be just as comfortable.
Pinarello claims a 1,130g frame weight for the Nytro in an unspecified size, with the Nytro Gravel’s frameset a little heavier at 1,250g.
The Nytro Road’s forks are said to weigh 440g unpainted in an unspecified steerer length, with the Nytro Gravel forks 460g.
Unmistakably Pinarello
It wouldn’t be a Pinarello without the brand’s signature asymmetric design, and the Nytro continues that tradition.
Because frames are subject to asymmetrical forces, Pinarello structures the non-driveside to compensate for the drivetrain forces on the driveside.
The Nytro can accept up to a 32mm road bike tyre, whereas the Nytro Gravel has clearance for 50mm gravel bike tyres.
Pinarello says the Nytro is compatible with either electronic or mechanical Shimano and SRAM groupsets.
The brand isn’t speccing Campagnolo groupsets on any of the bikes. However, Pinarello says you can run a Campagnolo groupset provided the MOST chainring is retained.
The Nytro Gravel features mounts for mudguards and a rack.
Motor modes are selected via the button on the integrated TQ top tube display, rather than an ancillary bar-mounted shifter.
Aero touches, of course
Pinarello has also aerodynamically optimised the Nytro and says it paid particular attention to the head tube, down tube and the stays.
Pinarello goes as far as to use different seatstay designs on the Nytro and Gravel models. The brand says the Nytro’s seatstays are inspired by the F-Series family, whereas the Nytro Gravel takes cues from the X-Series endurance bikes.
The Nytro also has integrated cables and hoses, inheriting the Total Internal Cable Routing (TiCr) system found on the Dogma, F-Series and X-Series bikes.
This sees the cables and hoses routed through the bars and stem before heading alongside the steerer tube and through the upper headset bearing.
An updated seat clamp
The Nytro inherits the new seat clamp design found on Pinarello’s F-Series and X-Series bikes.
The clamp is integrated inside the seat tube, with the bolt accessed from the top face of the top tube.
Pinarello says this shaves 36g off compared to the previous Nytro, and also reduces the area’s profile, improving aerodynamics.
The Nytro models reuse the seatpost found on the F-Series, while the Nytro Gravel uses a 31.6mm round seatpost, in case you want to upgrade to a dropper post.
The Fork Flap remains
Pinarello continues to use its Onda fork concept on all of the bikes. This is claimed to absorb vibrations and improve handling performance. The road fork uses a 47mm rake, whereas the gravel fork is 50mm.
Both forks retain the Fork Flap, a shroud that conceals the front brake caliper. This, again, is claimed to reduce drag.
Pinarello Nytro geometry
Both the Nytro and Nytro Gravel frames have geometries specific to their discipline, rather than using one frame for both platforms.
Both platforms are available in six sizes, from 46 to 60cm. The frame size is the seat tube length measurement, measured from the centre of the bottom bracket to where the seat tube would effectively intersect the top of the head tube.
