New tyres designed to perfectly pair with Zipp’s wide hookless rims
Zipp has collaborated with Goodyear on two tubeless tyres designed specifically for its wheels and hookless rims.
The Vector R Z30 NSW tyre pairs with Zipp’s 353 NSW wheelset, while the Vector R Z30 SW and the wider Z35 SW are optimised for the brand’s 303 Firecrest wheelset.
The Vector R Z30 NSW tyre uses a short-ply construction and 150 TPI (threads-per-inch) casing, while the SW tyre has a 120 TPI casing.
Designed for Zipp’s hookless rims
Zipp claims that the tyres are the first to be designed specifically for its hookless rims, as opposed to being simply hookless-compatible.
However, the tyres are still compatible with hooked rims and can be used with any wheelset, providing the dimensions are inside the ETRTO’s recommended rim-tyre width limits.
Zipp says the tubeless road bike tyres include a new ‘dual angle’ bead design to make tubeless set up easier and ensuring retention when fitted.
Zipp says it worked closely with tyre designers at Goodyear on the shape of the tyres, so they are true to size on a 25mm internal rim width (which both the 353 NSW and 303 Firecrest wheelsets feature).
The SW tyre uses the same short-ply material as the NSW tyre, but it has a 120 TPI casing compared to the NSW’s 150 TPI casing. They both use Goodyear’s Dynamic UHP compound.
This compound used is said to be Goodyear’s lightest and fastest rolling, and has been tested by BikeRadar before in the brand’s racy Goodyear Eagle F1 R tubeless tyre.
The tyres feature a durable tread cap with a textured pattern, intended to provide good traction in all conditions.
An R:Shield nylon puncture protection breaker is used on the tyres.
Sizes, prices and availability
The Vector R Z30 NSW tyre comes in a 700x30c size and weighs a claimed 280g.
The SW tyre is available in two sizes, 700x30c and 700x35c. The narrower SW tyre weighs a claimed 325g, while the wider version is said to weigh 365g.
The tyres are priced at £80 / €90 / $80 each and are available to buy from today.
