These boisterous end-of-season races are essentially uphill versions of time trials, with most events run by the Cycling Time Trials governing body or affiliated clubs. At races you will find a mix of hardcore hill climbers and novice have-a-go heroes. The UK national hill climb championship on the last Sunday in October marks the end of the season. <\/span><\/p>\n\n<h5 class=\"sans-serif article-subhead\"><strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-ccp-secondary-light-color\">02<\/span> <strong>Absorb the atmosphere <\/strong><\/strong><\/h5>\n\n<p class=\"article-full-body sans-serif\">Hill climbs are short and sharp slogs \u2013 often less than 1km \u2013 so you\u2019ll usually have a big crowd cheering you on. Channel this energy all the way uphill. \u201cHill climb races are horrible and wonderful at the same time: a great challenge with a great atmosphere,\u201d says coach Matt Clinton of Clinterval Coaching <em>(<a href=\"http:\/\/clinterval.co.uk\">clinterval.co.uk<\/a>). <\/em><\/p>\n\n<h5 class=\"sans-serif article-subhead\"><strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-ccp-secondary-light-color\">03 <\/span><strong>Pace yourself <\/strong><\/strong><\/h5>\n\n<p class=\"article-full-body sans-serif\">Aim for an even effort throughout the climb. \u201cRemember it\u2019s a race to the finish line, not a race off the start line,\u201d says Clinton. \u201cStart too hard and you\u2019ll be in the red too early and regret it.\u201d <\/p>\n\n<h5 class=\"sans-serif article-subhead\"><strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-ccp-secondary-light-color\">04<\/span> <strong>Ditch Some Weight <\/strong><\/strong><\/h5>\n\n<p class=\"article-full-body sans-serif\">Hill climbs are an excuse to get obsessive about your kit. \u201cLosing<span> unnecessary kit is the cheapest way to save weight \u2013 and gain time,\u201d says Clinton. \u201cGet rid of extra bottles, pumps and saddle packs. And for the ultimate weight-saving, buy a skinsuit.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-large\"><p><span class=\"has-inline-color has-ccp-secondary-light-color\">\u201cREMEMBER IT\u2019S A RACE TO THE FINISH LINE, NOT A RACE OFF THE START LINE. START TOO HARD AND YOU\u2019LL REGRET IT\u201d <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<h5 class=\"sans-serif article-subhead\"><strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-ccp-secondary-light-color\">05<\/span> <strong>Do a recce <\/strong><\/strong><\/h5>\n\n<p class=\"article-full-body sans-serif\">Doing your homework with a recce ride will give you an edge. \u201cYou can work out the best line, how to avoid holes and gravel, and identify the steepest parts,\u201d says Clinton. \u201cThis recce will also give you an idea of pacing. Wind direction is crucial so check that too.\u201d <\/p>\n\n<h5 class=\"sans-serif article-subhead\"><strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-ccp-secondary-light-color\">06<\/span> <strong>Build core strength<\/strong><\/strong><\/h5>\n\n<p class=\"article-full-body sans-serif\">\u201cIf you don\u2019t have anything to stabilise yourself then you\u2019ll flounder,\u201d says experienced hill climber Angus Fisk. \u201cYou can have the biggest muscles in the world, but if they aren\u2019t working in combination then they aren\u2019t useful. The current record of 1min 47.6secs remains unbeaten since 1983\u2026 <\/span><\/p>\n\n<h5 class=\"sans-serif article-subhead\"><strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-ccp-secondary-light-color\">Bec Hill Climb <\/span><\/strong><\/h5>\n\n<p class=\"article-full-body sans-serif\">\u25cf <span style=\"\">Raced on White Lane near Limpsfield in Surrey in October (9th in 2022), this takes the steepest route up Titsey Hill for 640m of pain and suffering at an average of 13%. You\u2019ll be cheered on by the crowds lined the closed road. It costs \u00a313 and is open to everyone from para cyclists to veterans. <\/span><\/p>\n\n<section class=\"wp-block-uagb-section uagb-section__wrap uagb-section__background-color
