The front derailleur is a key component on many road, gravel and hybrid bikes. While it does a simple job, moving the chain between the chainrings on the crankset,<\/a>\u00a0there\u2019s more to the front derailleur than meets the eye.<\/p>\n

While mountain bikes have gravitated to a 1x setup, with a single chainring at the front of the drivetrain, many road-going bikes have two chainrings on the crankset.<\/p>\n

In simple terms, with the chain on the larger chainring, you can access \u2018harder\u2019 gears and ride faster, while the smaller chainring will help when you\u2019re going uphill at slower speeds.<\/p>\n

You can also find bikes with three chainrings for even lower gearing, although triple chainsets are now rare to find on new bikes.<\/p>\n
