Vitus has had an endurance-bike shaped hole in its range until now, but that\u2019s about to change with the development of the Venon \u2013 and this one is all about versatility.<\/p>\n

The Venon has been in development at Vitus since the design team finished the very well received ZX-1 CRS<\/a> aero bike.<\/p>\n

The new endurance platform uses the same high-grade carbon as the ZX-1, which helps keep the weight competitively low, according to Vitus. The bike will be named the Venon, resurrecting a Vitus name discontinued back in 2019.<\/p>\n

Road or gravel?<\/h2>\n

The idea behind the Venon is to make a bike that has versatility at its core \u2013 and that primarily means plenty of tyre clearance.<\/p>\n

We\u2019ve got a prototype of the Venon and our bike comes in a road setup replete with 30mm WTB Exposure<\/a> slick tyres, but there\u2019s a huge amount of clearance to spare.<\/p>\n

Vitus tells us the frame is capable of taking 45mm gravel bike tyres<\/a> safely. Or you could run it through the winter with 35mm tyres and mudguards because the Venon will come with proper mudguard fittings, too.<\/p>\n

Like Cannondale\u2019s new Synapse<\/a>, Vitus isn\u2019t submitting this one to UCI scrutiny and getting an approved sticker. That\u2019s because it\u2019s not aimed at Vitus\u2019s race team; instead, it\u2019s a bike built for everyday riders.<\/p>\n

The details also point to versatility. There\u2019s a removable bridge on the rear stays, allowing for mudguard fitment or maximum tyre clearance.<\/p>\n

The front derailleur mount is also removable, should you want to run a 1x drivetrain. Plus, the bottle cage mounts on the down tube can be run in two positions, enabling you to occupy the lower position and fit a frame bag for a bit of bikepacking<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Like the ZX-1 aero road bike<\/a>, the new platform uses FSA\u2019s clever ACR (Aerodynamic Cable Routing) system to run the cables internally, so the bike looks very clean but everything should still be easy enough to access from a mechanical point of view.<\/p>\n

Vitus is as yet undecided on the full Venon line-up, but the brand is certain there will be both road and gravel editions. So that likely means 1x and 2x versions, with SRAM eTap AXS and SRAM XPLR<\/a> models, plus mechanical and electronic Shimano GRX builds, too.<\/p>\n

So, how does it ride? I haven\u2019t had a huge amount of time on the Venon \u2013 just a few hours \u2013 but my first impressions are positive.<\/p>\n

The ride position puts the Venon very much in the fast endurance bike mode. It\u2019s in Cannondale Synapse, Giant Defy<\/a> and Merida Scultura Endurance<\/a> territory.<\/p>\n

The ride is plenty comfortable, but that\u2019s to be expected when you\u2019re running 30mm-wide tyres. I\u2019ll be sure to switch in something a little narrower as part of my testing. I\u2019ll also try something wider to see how close the Venon is to the best gravel bikes<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The mix-and-match approach to the drivetrain, with its SRAM Red and Force parts, probably isn\u2019t representative of the final specifications but, as I\u2019d expect, it all works seamlessly together.<\/p>\n

The 50mm-deep Prime wheels feel as though they hold speed well and respond quickly to efforts, though I\u2019ve been lucky to avoid any really windy conditions as of yet. I still need to find out how they fare in brisk crosswinds.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s early days for this pre-production prototype but, as we\u2019ve seen from some of the best endurance road bikes<\/a>, the Venon appears to bridge the gap between road and gravel, enabling riders to fine-tune the build to suit the terrain.<\/p>\n
