While the Tour de France<\/a> yellow jersey is one of sport\u2019s most fabled prizes, there is more than just prestige up for grabs at the 109th edition of the race in 2022.<\/p>\n

Alongside the yellow, green, polka dot and white jerseys<\/a>, the Tour de France had a \u20ac2,288,450 prize pot to give out in 2021.<\/p>\n

This included a \u20ac500,000 overall prize for champion Tadej Poga\u010dar (Team UAE Emirates). The Slovenian accumulated a total of \u20ac610,770 throughout the course of the race for stage wins, placings on stages and climbs, and long spells in the polka-dot and white jerseys.<\/p>\n

Riders can earn money from all the main prizes, as well as on categorised climbs, intermediate sprints or even just finishing within the first 160 classified riders in the race.<\/p>\n

All Tour de France teams<\/a> have different formulas for sharing the prize money, but usually it\u2019s put into a pot and divided between every rider (and often staff) on the team at the end of the race. Cycling is a team sport with individual winners, after all.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s how the 2021 Tour de France prize money was broken down.<\/p>\n

The winner of each stage earned \u20ac11,000 in 2021, as well as a place on the podium at the end of the day.<\/p>\n

Second place was worth \u20ac5,500, while the rider in third raked in \u20ac2,800.<\/p>\n

In fact, every rider down to 20th place (\u20ac300) earned a share of the \u20ac28,650 on offer each day.<\/p>\n

    If winning the stage also put a rider into the yellow jersey, there was an extra \u20ac500 up for grabs, with the same prize on offer for each day a rider wore the maillot jaune.<\/p>\n

    That, however, is small fry compared to the main prize pot for the general classification.<\/p>\n

    The rider in the yellow jersey on the final podium in Paris in 2021 won \u20ac500,000, with Poga\u010dar taking the spoils. The prize increased in 2016 and has remained the same since.<\/p>\n

    Second place\u00a0 \u00a0went to Jonas Vingegaard, netting him \u20ac200,000, with Richard Carapaz coming in third and taking home \u20ac100,000.<\/p>\n

    Each rider from fourth to 19th receives incrementally less money, and everyone from 20th place to 160th is awarded \u20ac1,000 for completing the roughly 3,500km course.<\/p>\n

      A day in the King of the Mountains jersey was worth \u20ac300, while the top eight in the final mountains classification are rewarded at the end of the race.<\/p>\n

      The overall winner in 2021 received \u20ac25,000, while second place got \u20ac15,000.<\/p>\n

      Poga\u010dar also took the King of the Mountains prize in 2020, as well as securing overall victory and, by default, the best young rider title.<\/p>\n

        It\u2019s not all about the final classification and the polka dot jersey \u2013 each climb at the Tour de France<\/a> has a prize on offer at the top.<\/p>\n

        For \u2018hors categorie\u2019 and first-category climbs, the first three over the summit earn prize money; on second-category ascents, it\u2019s the top two and on third and fourth-cat climbs it\u2019s just the first rider over.<\/p>\n

        The 2021 Tour de France contained 27 climbs categorised as second category or above \u2013 with five in the top HC category. There were also 10 category-three and 23 category-four ascents.<\/p>\n

        The five HC climbs were worth \u20ac800 to the first across, \u20ac450 to the second and \u20ac300 to the third. The 13 category-one mountains offered \u20ac650, \u20ac400 and \u20ac150 respectively.<\/p>\n
