With this in mind, many use this time as a chance to get some training done on the bike.<\/p>\n<p>To be clear, we\u2019re absolutely not suggesting you take risks on the road. However, by mixing up the pace, effort and intensity when <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/fitness-and-training\/cycling-to-work-guide\/&quot;\">cycling to work<\/a> as long as it\u2019s appropriate to do so, you can turn a commute into a great training session and <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/fitness-and-training\/10-steps-to-becoming-a-fitter-faster-better-cyclist\/&quot;\">become a fitter, faster, better cyclist<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But even if you\u2019re not fussed about doing specific training, <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/nutrition\/how-your-commute-can-help-you-watch-your-weight\/&quot;\">your commute can help you watch your weight<\/a>. It can create a calorie deficit in time when you otherwise might be sedentary, such as driving or sitting on public transport.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t think you need a <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-road-bikes\/&quot;\">road bike<\/a> to train on your commute though. The <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/whats-the-best-bike-for-commuting\/&quot;\">best bike for commuting<\/a> for you could be a <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-gravel-bikes\/&quot;\">gravel bike<\/a> or <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-mountain-bike\/&quot;\">mountain bike<\/a>, and you can get a solid session in on these too.<\/p>\n<p>Riding through traffic is inevitably stop-start in nature, so use this to your advantage, focusing on high-intensity speed and power intervals in between pauses.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, you should never ride through red lights \u2013 instead, use them and other forced stops for trackstand practice, followed by explosive sprint starts.<\/p>\n<p>Short interval repetitions will improve lactic acid tolerance and will recruit and train your fast-twitch, glycolytic muscle fibres \u2014 in other words, the ones that don\u2019t need oxygen from the lungs to function.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some workouts you can do on your daily bicycle commute.<\/p>\n<h2>1. will increase your ability to rise to tough challenges, all-out sprint repetitions will help to increase your flat-out speed and muscular power.<\/p>\n<p>The difference between sprints and intervals is in the length of recovery between efforts \u2013 with sprint training, you should leave between five and 20 minutes between bursts, whether that\u2019s a sprint up through the gears from the lights the fartlek interval workout relies on randomly occurring and lasting efforts that you take on at about 80 per cent of your maximum \u2014 of course, only where safe \u2014 and works your body\u2019s aerobic and anaerobic systems.<\/p>\n<p>On a commute, this might mean sprinting away from lights or junctions, trying to keep up with traffic for 30 seconds before backing off and sitting up, or until the next red light or traffic jam makes you stop.<\/p>\n<p>Repeat this throughout your commute in a series of three to five sprints, varying the length of sprint and the length of recovery in between.<\/p>\n<p>This is kind of <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/fitness-and-training\/hiit-interval-training\/&quot;\">HIIT interval training<\/a> is very demanding because you spend a lot of time in upper <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/fitness-and-training\/training-zones\/&quot;\">training zones<\/a>, so keep the duration below an hour.<\/p>\n<p>Do this type of session no more than twice a week and schedule an easier ride the day before and after.
