Fox thinks so"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\"><\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Nick Clark\n                \t\t<\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Wednesday, 18 January 2023 at 12:00 am<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body> <p>Fox has filed a patent outlining two separate inventions that work in unison to combat the adverse effects chain tension has on a bike\u2019s rear suspension.<\/p>\n<p>The \u2018<a href=\"\/\/patents.justia.com\/patent\/20220389979&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">Suspension Enhancing Hub and Rear Derailleur Assembly<\/a>\u2019 describes a rear hub and derailleur that automatically disengage, improving suspension sensitivity and performance.<\/p>\n<p>The filing comes off the back of increased interest in how pedal kickback can affect performance \u2013 products such as the O-Chain and the increased popularity of high-pivot bikes with idler pulleys all show manufacturers\u2019 focus on minimising pedal kickback.<\/p>\n<p>Here, we\u2019ll examine what Fox\u2019s new tech means, how it works and the implications for the future of suspension performance as a whole.<\/p>\n<section class=\"&quot;highlight\"><div class=\"&quot;highlight__content\" editor-content=\"\"> <h4>What is pedal kickback?<\/h4>\n<p>The rear axle moves further away from the bottom bracket at some point through the compression of almost all mountain bike <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/the-ultimate-guide-to-mountain-bike-rear-suspension-systems\/&quot;\">rear suspension systems<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>To compensate for this, the rear-derailleur cage moves forward, feeding more chain onto the <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/workshop\/bike-cassettes\/&quot;\">cassette<\/a>, which in turn feeds more chain into the upper span, enabling it to grow with the axle movement.<\/p>\n<p>The cassette can\u2019t spin faster than the wheel because the <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/freehubs\/&quot;\">freehub<\/a>\u2018s rotation is locked to the rear-wheel rotation. This means at slow speeds, or when the rear wheel is locked up, the cassette can\u2019t provide slack to the upper of the chain.<\/p>\n<p>This causes the chain to move backwards, which in turn rotates the cranks backwards to allow for the chain growth required for suspension compression.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This is called pedal kickback. The sharp rotation of the cranks makes it feel as though the bike is overly firm and can make it harder to keep your feet in place if you ride with <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-mountain-bike-pedals\/&quot;\">flat pedals<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Pedal kickback also reduces the sensitivity of the rear suspension as derailleur assembly. It consists of a mounting component, a parallelogram component for shifting through the cassette and a \u2018P-Knuckle\u2019 housing a clutch mechanism.<\/p>\n<p>This is connected to a short cage with an upper and lower pulley wheel \u2013 so far so familiar.<\/p>\n<p>However, Fox\u2019s patent describes a system consisting of a motor, gear, spring, linear solenoid, torsional power spring, clutch plate, and at least one thrust bearing that can automatically disengage the clutch.<\/p>\n<p>The patent suggests sensors and processors would control engagement for both the rear derailleur and hub. It also suggests an override switch that would enable riders to control the system through a bar-mounted switch, similar to a <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-dropper-posts\/&quot;\">dropper post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<section class=\"&quot;highlight\"><div class=\"&quot;highlight__content\" editor-content=\"\"> <h4>What is a derailleur clutch?<\/h4>\n<p>A derailleur clutch works in tandem with a tension spring to put tension on the chain, keeping it in place over rough terrain by pulling it tight around the chainring and cassette.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Without this, the chain can slap the chainstay, making a horrendous noise and sometimes damaging the frame.<\/p>\n<p>Clutches were introduced to rear derailleurs as 1x drivetrains gained prominence. Extra chain tension was needed due to the removal of the front derailleur, which acts as a chain guide, stopping the chain from jumping off the front chainring.<\/p>\n<p> <\/p><\/div> <\/section><h2>Why is Fox doing this?<\/h2>\n<p>Chain tension is a hot topic in the world of mountain biking, with new frame designs and innovations created to combat this issue.<\/p>\n<p>Fox isn\u2019t the first brand to propose a \u2018disengageable\u2019 rear hub, with Canyon prototyping its <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.pinkbike.com\/news\/canyon-project-disconnect-eurobike-2016.html&quot;\">DisConnect<\/a> on-the-fly \u2018disconnectable\u2019 freehub in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>High-pivot linkages are an increasingly popular frame design for <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-downhill-mountain-bikes\/&quot;\">downhill<\/a> and <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-enduro-bikes\/&quot;\">enduro bikes<\/a>, with many manufacturers choosing the linkage for its rearwards axle path and idler pulley.<\/p>\n<p>The idler pulley routes the chain near or concentric to the main high-pivot location, minimising pedal kickback (check out our <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/what-is-a-high-pivot-mountain-bike\/&quot;\">high-pivot explainer<\/a> for more detail).<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/first-look-friday\/ochain-active-spider\/&quot;\">Ochain Active Spider<\/a> has also seen great success in the downhill World Cup and Enduro World Series.<\/p>\n<p>This works by allowing the chainring to rotate backwards by either 6, 9, or 12 degrees, reducing the amount of kickback you feel through the pedals.<\/p>\n<p>The Ochain does have a noticeable slack between pedalling and the freehub engaging. Fox\u2019s patent suggests it would be able to avoid this by using sensors on the bike that can \u2018re-engage\u2019 the freehub when the rider starts pedalling.<\/p>\n<h2>Where could we see these Race Face is owned by Fox and the brand already makes hubs, cranksets and chainrings.<\/p>\n<p>The hub shown in the patent also looks similar to the design of the Vault Hub, with the pawls being installed on the hub\u2019s shell rather than the more conventional method of placing them on the freehub body. This gives plenty of room for electronics inside the hub.<\/p>\n<p>The new patents suggest Fox has ambitions of producing an <a program, which features a wireless rear-brake sensor.<\/p>\n<p>All eyes will be on the downhill pits this year for a glimpse of any prototypes.<\/p>\n<h2>Could this change everything?<\/h2>\n<p>While there have been other systems that isolate the <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/drivetrains-explained-all-of-the-parts-that-make-your-bike-go\/&quot;\">drivetrain<\/a> from the effects of suspension, nothing has yet been undertaken by a brand the size of Fox.<\/p>\n<p>Considering its relationship with OEMs, it\u2019s likely any design from Fox will have an impact on the wider market.<\/p>\n<p>When designing suspension linkages, bike manufacturers have to take into account chain tension.
