The brand\u2019s S-Works equivalent will shave grams off its high-end frames <\/p>

Cannondale has unveiled Lab71, a premium sub-brand for its top-of-the-range bikes.<\/p>\n

We spotted \u2018Lab71\u2019 printed on the seat tube of the yet-to-be-unreleased Cannondale SuperSix Evo<\/a> in December.<\/p>\n

At the time we speculated that it could be a new, top-tier grade of carbon, the equivalent of Specialized\u2019s S-Works label or Cannondale\u2019s version of Trek\u2019s ProjectOne custom paint scheme.<\/p>\n

Now Cannondale has revealed more details about Lab71 and, while it\u2019s yet to confirm exactly which bikes will get the Lab71 treatment, expect the new SuperSix to play a key role here.<\/p>\n

Cannondale says Lab71 refers to 1971, the year the company was founded.<\/p>\n

The brand describes Lab71 as the \u201cbest of the best\u201d of its bikes, but has released precious few details at this stage.<\/p>\n

The list of UCI-approved bikes for 2023<\/a> shows there are three frame tiers for the new SuperSix Evo. We imagine that the highest level \u2013 and, in all likelihood, lightest \u2013 Cannondale SuperSix 4 Hi-Mod is the Lab71 version.<\/p>\n

This is because Cannondale promises Lab71 bikes will be equipped with \u201ccutting-edge materials and processes, combined with stunning finishes and a curated selection of the finest components available\u201d.<\/p>\n

In short, Cannondale is claiming the bikes will have better frames and parts, not just flasher paint work. It remains to be seen whether the top-tier Hi-Mod frame will be only available as a Lab71 bike.<\/p>\n

Cannondale says Lab71 models will be available in its premier line-up of road, gravel, mountain and electric bikes from 1 March.<\/p>\n

A SuperSix release is surely imminent then, with the bike already being ridden by Cannondale\u2019s pro teams in the WorldTour season\u2019s early races.<\/p>\n

Cannondale has not released prices but we would guess Lab71bikes will cost more than the brand\u2019s current most expensive bikes. Perhaps Cannondale might surprise us, though?<\/p>\n

While this news comes\u00a0against a backdrop of Canyon\u2019s bike price cuts for UK customers<\/a> and a predicted drop in some bike prices in 2023<\/a> due to surplus stock, it\u2019s not uncommon for brands to establish a premium sub-brand for flagship bikes.<\/p>\n

As we\u2019ve already covered, this, on paper, represents Cannondale\u2019s attempt to elevate its top-tier bikes in a similar way to those Specialized bikes carrying the S-Works moniker. Equally, Canyon introduced the CFR halo label in 2020<\/a>.<\/p>\n
