That was just \u00a3100 less than the broadly equivalent <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/bikes\/road-bikes\/trek-madone-5-9-first-ride-review\/&quot;\">Ultegra-equipped Madone 5.9 of the time<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Even with <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/long-reads\/2023-bike-prices\/&quot;\">today\u2019s inflated prices<\/a>, \u00a32,800 is still an irrational price for a nominally simple singlespeed bike (let alone in 2009), but that was hardly the point.<\/p>\n<p>While I need <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/riding-during-lockdown\/&quot;\">another<\/a> <a finished in a honkin\u2019 grey and orange colour scheme, the bike was designed for day-to-day urban abuse.<\/p>\n<p>But based on a <a to know what led Trek to think this would make a good basis for a singlespeed hack, but the cycling world is all the richer for this seemingly irrational whim.<\/p>\n<p>The District Carbon was Nothing feels wasted.<\/p>\n<p>I have experienced this on many fixies, but I can only imagine how good climbing would feel on an uncompromisingly whippy carbon bike.<\/p>\n<p>The District Carbon was also a totally out-of-character, niche product for such a large brand to have produced. That\u2019s hardly a quality you could level at most bikes from mainstream brands these days.<\/p>\n<p>In my eyes, that raises it to a level of coolness that is almost unsurpassed.<\/p>\n<section class=\"&quot;highlight\"><div class=\"&quot;highlight__content\" editor-content=\"\"> <h2>What if I want a modern-day District Carbon?<\/h2>\n<p>Sadly, the District Carbon is long gone from Trek\u2019s line-up. Though there are a <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/news\/treks-1120-adventure-bike-might-survive-the-apocalypse\/&quot;\">few unusual bikes in Trek\u2019s catalogue<\/a>, there\u2019s nothing quite as lovably odd as this.<\/p>\n<p>However, the adoption of T47 bottom brackets across Trek\u2019s bikes means you could run an eccentric bottom bracket if you wanted to create a modern-day District Carbon.<\/p>\n<p>An eccentric bottom bracket works on the same principle as the District Carbon\u2019s dropouts, moving the crankset spindle about the centre of the bottom bracket.<\/p>\n<p>This can be used to tension the chain, as Erik Nohlin of Specialized did to create his <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/tech\/erik-nohlin-specialized-aethos-fixed-gear\/&quot;\">fixed-gear Aethos<\/a>. will remain unfulfilled.<\/p>\n<p>At the time of writing, no Trek District Carbon has been sold on eBay for some time.
