We were at the start of Strade Bianche to scope out the key tech choices for the Italian semi-Classic <\/p>

Tyres are a hot topic at the top level of professional cycling, not least through the spring when riders face the cobbles of northern Europe and, on Saturday, the white gravel roads of Italy\u2019s Strade Bianche.<\/span><\/p>\n

We were at the <\/span>partenza<\/span><\/i> in Siena to prowl the start pen, roaming the team buses to take a closer look at the key tech choices ahead of Tom Pidcock\u2019s solo victory.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Here\u2019s what we spotted, including the near-ubiquitous adoption of tubeless tyres<\/a>, the return of Matej Mohori\u010d\u2019s dropper post, a curious spec choice from Peter Sagan and bespoke nutrition plans.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tubeless tyres dominate<\/h2>\n

Let\u2019s start with tyres \u2013 a key talking point at a race such as Strade Bianche, with its 63km of gravel roads. <\/span><\/p>\n

Here, the additional clearance of the latest race bikes comes to the fore, with 28c and 30c tyres specced across the board.<\/span><\/p>\n

Perhaps unsurprisingly, given the rise of tubeless tyres in the pro peloton, and particularly in the Classics, tubeless also dominated in Italy.<\/span><\/p>\n

We spotted the <\/span>new Vittoria Corsa Pro<\/span><\/a> back in December, and the as-yet-unreleased tubeless tyre was a popular choice at Strade Bianche.<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s being used by teams including Jumbo-Visma, Lotto\u2013Dstny and EF Education\u2013EasyPost, with the latter also using foam tyre liners from Vittoria for run-flat protection.<\/span><\/p>\n

While official details are yet to be confirmed, EF Education\u2013EasyPost\u2019s vice president of operations, Jonathan Breekveldt, told BikeRadar that \u201cthe coefficient of rolling resistance has been reduced again\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n
