Scope says Team DSM will race this year\u2019s Paris-Roubaix using its Atmoz tyre pressure control system.<\/p>\n

According to a press release from the Dutch brand, the \u201cScope Atmoz will be present in the peloton\u201d this year at cycling\u2019s toughest cobbled classic.<\/p>\n

This wireless system (which can be installed on \u201cany 29in<\/a> or 700c<\/a> wheel\u201d) enables tyre pressure to be adjusted manually while riding, using two remote control buttons mounted to the handlebars.<\/p>\n

The Atmoz is claimed to be capable of inflating or deflating a tyre by 7.3psi \/0.5 bar per second, meaning significant shifts in tyre pressure could be made within seconds.<\/p>\n

Scope claims such adjustments can offer gains of \u201cup to 30 wattage [sic] of reduced rolling resistance, combined with improved comfort and safety in rough and wet conditions\u201d, if performed at the correct moments.<\/p>\n

Didn\u2019t Scope say this last year?<\/h2>\n

Those with good memories may remember a similar story about the \u20ac3,998 system last year<\/a>, with Team DSM ultimately electing not to use the system come race day.<\/p>\n

Dutch website Wielerflits<\/a> reports Team DSM will indeed use the system at this year\u2019s race, however.<\/p>\n

It also says Team Jumbo-Visma will use the HubTech Kinetic Air Pressure System (KAPS \u2013 a similar system from a competing brand) during the race too.<\/p>\n

Why would you change tyre pressure mid-race?<\/h2>\n

As we commented last year, such devices could potentially offer significant performance gains if used strategically.<\/p>\n

Though renowned for its cobbled sectors, the majority of Paris-Roubaix is spent riding on \u2018normal\u2019 roads.<\/p>\n

An optimum tyre pressure<\/a> (which provides the best balance of comfort, grip and rolling resistance) for tarmac or concrete roads is too high to be optimum on the harsh cobbled sectors, though.<\/p>\n

As a result, riders and teams have historically compromised between speed on tarmac and comfort, speed and grip on the cobbles.<\/p>\n

The cobbles get all the attention at Paris-Roubaix, but riders and teams have to consider performance on standard roads too.<\/span><\/figcaption> Scope<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n

Being able to manually adjust to the optimum tyre pressure for each surface would theoretically eliminate any such trade-offs.<\/p>\n

Of course, these systems do add weight and bulk to each wheel, but given the predominantly flat parcours of Paris\u2013Roubaix, the benefits ought to outweigh the drawbacks if Scope\u2019s claims are to be believed.<\/p>\n

For example, Scope claims its Atmoz system weighs just 300g. Although it\u2019s unclear if that covers one or both wheels on a bike, even a 600g weight gain would still have minimal performance impact during a race such as Paris-Roubaix<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Even with hardware mounted to both wheels and the handlebar, the weight gain would likely be inconsequential to performance in a flat race such as Paris-Roubaix.<\/span><\/figcaption> Scope<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n

Are these systems UCI legal?<\/h2>\n

Yes, they are \u2013 on 11 April 2022, the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) released a statement saying \u201cbuilt-in management systems for tyre pressure are authorised in professional road cycling\u201d.<\/p>\n

According to the UCI, the key factor is that such systems apparently don\u2019t \u201ccontain any moving parts or compressors\u201d.<\/p>\n

Although such systems presumably must have some moving parts in order to store and transfer air (such as valves that open and close, for example), we can infer the UCI is essentially stipulating these systems must not include motors, or anything that could be used to drive the rotation of the wheels like a hub-based electric bike motor<\/a>.<\/p>\n

HubTech says its KAPS system is driven by the rotation of the wheel it\u2019s mounted to.<\/span><\/figcaption> HubTech<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n

Scope, for example, specifically says the Atmoz is operated mechanically, and that \u201cno motors or compressors are involved in the system\u201d.<\/p>\n

HubTech, meanwhile, says its KAPS system functions using a lightweight pump \u201cdriven by the rotation of the wheel\u201d, and therefore doesn\u2019t fall foul of the UCI\u2019s technical regulations<\/a> either.<\/p>\n

Indeed, according to Twitter, Team Jumbo-Visma rider Edoardo Affini has already set a precedent by using the HubTech KAPS system in this year\u2019s edition of Dwars door Vlaanderen.<\/p>\n
