So let\u2019s look at how to get better at time trialling.<\/p>\n<p>The TT offers a different kind of satisfaction from bunch racing. Nobody sits on your wheel then jumps out to beat you in the last 100m. Barring a mechanical or a sudden change in the wind, the best rider wins, but more than that it\u2019s a pure test of your ability to ride a bike fast.<\/p>\n<p>Finish your first time trial and, when you\u2019ve wiped the sweat from your eyes, most riders will have the same thought: \u201cI want to go faster!\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Learn to hide from the wind<\/h2>\n<div Media<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n<p>All the bling kit in the world won\u2019t make you go faster if your body acts like a giant air brake.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe rider makes up over 80 per cent of the frontal area,\u201d says Chris Boardman, arguably Britain\u2019s best ever TT rider, \u201cand at any reasonable speed 90 per cent of the energy you produce goes into overcoming wind resistance.\u201d Cut that resistance and you\u2019ll go faster.<\/p>\n<p>Keen riders can head for a wind tunnel for guidance, or you can put your TT or road bike on a <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-smart-trainer\/&quot;\">turbo trainer<\/a> or set of <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/fitness-and-training\/how-to-ride-on-rollers\/&quot;\">rollers<\/a> in front of a full-length mirror to tweak your <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/sizing-and-fit\/road-bike-position\/&quot;\">bike position<\/a> at home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaking your silhouette smaller is a crude but fairly accurate way to reduce drag,\u201d says Boardman. \u201cTT bars bring your arms in and round off your shoulders. Dropping your body also has a significant impact for every centimetre lower you go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But, he says, don\u2019t have too great a drop to the bar. \u201cIf the front of the bike is too low you have to stick your head up to see where you\u2019re going, which makes the silhouette bigger.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Loosen up<\/h2>\n<div class=\"&quot;image-handler__container\" even a modified road bike with clip-on aero bars, will have a more extreme riding position than most roadies are used to.<\/p>\n<p>Riding with your head down, backside in the air and elbows close together doesn\u2019t look comfortable, and to some extent it isn\u2019t. However, a rider can use <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/fitness-and-training\/8-stretches-to-improve-your-flexibility-and-cycling-performance\/&quot;\">stretches or yoga to improve their flexibility<\/a>. This would help you stay comfortable and powerful in your TT pose.<\/p>\n<p>Physical activity expert, Professor Greg Whyte, says stretching the backside (glutes) and hips (adductors) is particularly with both legs bent,\u201d he says. \u201cPlace the ankle of one leg on the knee of the other. Place your hands behind the bent knee and pull it in towards your chest. Hold for 20 to 30 seconds. Repeat with the other leg.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Professor Simon Jobson, Dean of the Faculty of Health and Wellbeing at the University of Winchester, \u201cthe big thing is habituation to the position\u201d. He recommends training regularly on your TT bike so it doesn\u2019t come as a shock on race day.<\/p>\n<h2>TT gear will help, but you don\u2019t need to spend loads<\/h2>\n<div job of go-faster frames or tri-bars is to get you out of the wind before they cut through the air. If you plan to use the same bike for your road riding and time-trialling, pay attention to the <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/sizing-and-fit\/road-bike-geometry-explained\/&quot;\">head tube length<\/a>, says Boardman.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA shorter head tube will make finding an aerodynamic position easier because it makes the front end of the bike lower and so helps you get out of the wind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You don\u2019t have to spend a lot. Lowering the front of the bike (which might be as simple as flipping the stem to drop the <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/workshop\/how-to-adjust-your-handlebar-height\/&quot;\">handlebar position<\/a>), fitting some tri-bars (from as little as \u00a330) and buying an <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/best-aero-road-helmets-8-tested-and-rated\/&quot;\">aero helmet<\/a> (around \u00a3100) could make a big difference to your speed.<\/p>\n<p>These changes offer the most bang for your aero buck. It\u2019s trying to get from point A to point B in the least amount of time.<\/p>\n<p>Plenty of us do it naturally: whether it\u2019s trying to knock a couple of minutes off the <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/fitness-and-training\/cycling-to-work-guide\/&quot;\">commute to work<\/a> or increasing our average speed on a weekend ride.<\/p>\n<p>Going faster under your own power is very motivating, which is why organised time trials are a popular form of bike racing. It\u2019s mostly you versus the clock rather than against other riders in close quarters, as in a mass start race.<\/p>\n<p>Time trials are called the \u2018race of truth\u2019 for good reason. There\u2019s no hiding in the bunch before the sprint, you have to work for your speed every inch of the way.<\/p>\n<p>Time trials happen all around the globe, either on their own or as part of stage races, but the UK is definitely top when it comes to having a TT \u201cscene\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Every week there are dozens of time trials all over the country with distances ranging from five miles to 24 hours.<\/p>\n<p>Time trials remain popular because they are a very accessible form of racing \u2013 you don\u2019t need any particular equipment or skills, just a bike and the ability to ride it.<\/p>\n<p>Courses are usually on open roads although in recent years there has been a rise in closed road\/circuit events, which are attractive especially to newcomers from a safety point of view.<\/p>\n<p>The most common question potential newcomers ask is \u201cAm I fast enough to ride the local 10 miler?\u201d. The answer is \u2018yes\u2019, no matter how fast you are.<\/p>\n<p>In our experience, no one else will be particularly bothered by your time. It\u2019s their time that will concern them, not yours.<\/p>\n<p>The easiest way to get into time trialling is to contact your local club and see if it runs TT events, or find an event on the <a href=\"\/\/www.cyclingtimetrials.org.uk\/&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener noopener noreferrer\" noreferrer=\"\">Cycling Time Trials website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Many clubs allow This session does what it says on the tin \u2013 you should focus on working against a very hard resistance over long periods. Avoid foods high in fat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the morning, the emphasis should again be on <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/nutrition\/the-best-carbs-for-cycling-what-to-eat-and-when\/&quot;\">carbohydrates<\/a>. \u201cToast and jam with a high fruit content is good,\u201d says Lawson. \u201cIf you prefer cereal, make sure it\u2019s low in fat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On the way to the event, sip an energy drink and take up to 200mg of caffeine, Lawson advises. \u201cContinue to drink throughout your warm-up to replace lost energy and take a <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/nutrition\/best-energy-gels-for-cycling\/&quot;\">caffeinated gel<\/a> when your warm-up has finished.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t bother with a bottle for a 10- or 25-mile race because time lost drinking outweighs the benefit of taking on more fluid. says former pro cyclist Matt Jones, \u201cbut the more you ride your TT bike, the more natural it feels and the more confident you will get.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He advises getting into and out of an aero tuck one arm at a time, in case of a strong gust of wind or hitting a pothole, so you still have control of the bike.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you are worried about riding in the aero tuck position, just ride in the position on a turbo at first, then find a quiet road to practise on. before a race is crucial to putting in a great performance. However, Rob Hayles, a former professional racer and former world champion track rider, would disagree.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStay relaxed,\u201d he says. This calm approach applies to the choices that you make before the start, as well as your mental approach to the race.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cErr on the side of caution with your equipment,\u201d says Hayles. \u201cIf you have a choice of different depth front wheels and it\u2019s windy, go with the shallower one. If you\u2019re not happy with the bike\u2019s handling, you\u2019ll lose time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hayles adds that it pays not to be too aggressive, even for a short race. \u201cYou can go out too fast, even in a 10-miler. Be in control of your effort. working front and rear bike lights are obligatory for time trials.<\/p>\n<p>There is even less need for a specialist time trial bike now CTT has mandated that every open time trial must have a road bike category. The aim is to reduce the barrier to entry and increase participation.<\/p>\n<p>Before, road bike riders would be ranked against time trial bike riders, who have a large technological advantage, in the overall standings.<\/p>\n<p>But you can race a road bike against people on similar equipment.<\/p>\n<p>The requirements for the road bike category are as follows:<\/p>\n<ul><li>Straight or drop handlebars<\/li>\n<li>No tri bars, aero bars or Spinacci bars<\/li>\n<li>No disc wheels<\/li>\n<li>Minimum of 12 spokes each for front and rear wheel<\/li>\n<li>Maximum wheel rim depth of events, which confusingly are open to all, only accept entry on the day, usually in cash.<\/p>\n<p>Open events tend to offer advance entry online. Some let you enter on the day, but there may be a surcharge.<\/p>\n<p>The best ways to find events near you are the CTT website, and clubs\u2019 websites and social media feeds.<\/p>\n<p>On the CTT website, you can narrow down your search to your region if you don\u2019t want to travel far afield.
