Pro riders were especially vociferous in expressing their disapproval \u2013 or, at worst, hatred \u2013 of the new braking technology.<\/p><p>Step forward to 2024 and all <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/pro-bike\/2021-worldtour-bikes\/\">WorldTour bikes<\/a> will be kitted out with discs.<\/p><p>Bike makers have switched their output almost exclusively to disc brakes. Even teams, such as UAE Team Emirates who swapped between rims and discs as recently as 2022, now only ride disc brakes.<\/p><p>That switch away from rim brakes isn\u2019t confined to premium models and has trickled down to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-cheap-road-bikes\/\">budget road bikes<\/a> too. They may have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/why-its-time-to-consign-cable-disc-brakes-to-history\/\">cable disc brakes<\/a> rather than hydraulic systems, but you\u2019ll find plenty of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-road-bike-under-1000\/\">road bikes under \u00a31,000<\/a> kitted out with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/disc-brake-rotors\/\">disc brake rotors<\/a>.<\/p><p>So what exactly are road disc brakes and why all the fuss? Are they really any different from other recent advancements in bike technology? And which braking system comes out on top when comparing disc brakes and rim brakes? <\/p><h2 id=\"h-what-are-road-bike-disc-brakes\">What are<em> <\/em>road bike disc brakes?<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Disc brakes are the standard stopping system on modern road bikes. &#8211; Russell Burton \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The most fundamental difference between traditional rim brakes and disc brakes is where the braking forces are applied.<\/p><p>As the name suggests \u2013 and just as it\u2019s been done for decades \u2013 rim brakes clamp directly on to the sides of the wheel rim itself. With a few rare exceptions, rim brakes are \u2018cable-actuated\u2019, meaning the levers are connected to the caliper with braided steel cables (bowden cables, to use the engineering term) that slide through some sort of housing. <\/p><p>You pull the lever, which then pulls on the cable, which then forces the caliper to clamp down on the rim.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-landscape_thumbnail\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"842\" height=\"562\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2019\/03\/1449186738358-1ulw4fseyge4k-1000-90-79fbd07-e1611762432210.jpg\" alt=\"1449186738358-1ulw4fseyge4k-1000-90-79fbd07\" class=\"wp-image-301794\" title=\"1449186738358-1ulw4fseyge4k-1000-90-79fbd07\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"> Rim brakes and disc brakes are actuated by two very different methods. Mid to high-end disc brakes use hydraulic fluid, as pictured here.<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Disc brakes are more often than not of the fully hydraulic variety, where the cable and housing are replaced by a non-compressible fluid and a hose in a fully sealed system. <\/p><p>When you pull the lever on a hydraulic brake, it pushes a plunger in a \u2018master cylinder\u2019, which then pushes that fluid through a hose to the caliper at the other end. That hydraulic pressure is what pushes the caliper pistons out and clamps the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/disc-brake-pads\/\">disc brake pads<\/a> onto the rotor.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1067\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2021\/04\/Genesis-CDA-02-9cb24be.jpg\" alt=\"Genesis CDA gravel bike is equipped with Shimano GRX gearing\" class=\"wp-image-627694\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Cable-operated disc brakes are a cheaper alternative to hydraulics. &#8211; Russell Burton \/ Our Media Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Like a rim brake, a cable-operated disc brake has a wire running to the brake mechanism, but in this case the cable pulls one or two of the pads in the caliper together to squeeze against the rotor. <\/p><p>Cable-operated disc brakes are cheaper and slightly less efficient than hydraulic disc brakes due to the friction and stretch in the cables, and are normally found on lower-priced bikes. <\/p><h2 id=\"h-who-makes-road-disc-brakes\">Who makes road disc brakes?<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1333\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2023\/06\/Pete-Sampsons-gravel-Giant-TCR-9-of-15-209ee7f.jpg\" alt=\"Pete Sampson's gravel Giant TCR (20 of 2)\" class=\"wp-image-734471\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">All of the main three groupset brands, including Campagnolo, make disc brakes. &#8211; Jack Luke \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>SRAM was first to market with a disc-specific <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/road-bike-groupsets-everything-you-need-to-know\/\">road bike groupset<\/a>, although there were mechanical disc brake options from Avid and others available before its 2012 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/hydraulic-road-brakes-whats-the-point\/\">Red Hydro R<\/a> came along.<\/p><p>That was followed in 2013 by Shimano and finally in 2016 by Campagnolo, so you can now find options from all the major road groupset manufacturers.<\/p><p>Initially disc brake options were limited, but all three brands have now trickled hydraulic disc brakes as an alternative to rim brakes into most of their groupsets. They&#8217;re a mainstay of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/gravel-bike-setup\/\"> groupsets designed for gravel bikes<\/a>, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/components\/groupsets\/shimano-grx-review\/\">Shimano GRX<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/components\/groupsets\/campagnolo-ekar-groupset-review\/\">Campagnolo Ekar<\/a>, and single-chainring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/drivetrains-explained-all-of-the-parts-that-make-your-bike-go\/\">drivetrains<\/a>.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1067\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2023\/04\/Sonder-Colibri-AL-03-465d516.jpg\" alt=\"Sonder Colibri AL road bike\" class=\"wp-image-723640\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Disc brakes are available on mid-tier groupsets, such as SRAM Rival. &#8211; Russell Burton \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>This means you can find disc brakes at a wide range of price points, including the top-tier <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/components\/groupsets\/groupset-road\/shimano-dura-ace-di2-r9200-review\">Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 R9200<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/components\/groupsets\/groupset-road\/sram-12-speed-red-etap-axs-hrd-review\">SRAM Red eTap AXS<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/components\/groupsets\/groupset-road\/campagnolo-super-record-wireless\">Campagnolo Super Record Wireless<\/a> groupsets.<\/p><p>The technology is also now available right down to cheaper options: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/news\/2023-sram-apex-groupset\">SRAM Apex<\/a>, Shimano Tiagra (which may soon be replaced by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/news\/shimano-cues\">Shimano Cues<\/a>) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/news\/campagnolo-chorus-12-speed-groupset\">Campagnolo Chorus<\/a>. Shimano also offers a mechanical disc brake option for Sora.<\/p><p>Alongside hydraulic disc brakes from the big three, you can often find mechanical disc brakes on lower-priced bikes: TRP (which also makes the Hy\/Rd mechanical\/hydraulic hybrid caliper), Hayes and SRAM&#8217;s Avid brand are common options. <\/p><h2 id=\"h-disc-brakes-vs-rim-brakes-why-disc-brakes-are-better-than-rim-brakes\">Disc brakes vs rim brakes: why disc brakes are better than rim brakes<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-landscape_thumbnail\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"820\" height=\"547\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2019\/03\/1449186738325-14sveo6nnfhby-1000-90-4c16716-e1611762761429.jpg\" alt=\"1449186738325-14sveo6nnfhby-1000-90-4c16716\" class=\"wp-image-301801\" title=\"1449186738325-14sveo6nnfhby-1000-90-4c16716\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"> Disc brake power can be customised by changing rotor sizes.<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Disc brakes offer several key advantages over rim brakes.<\/p><p>First, they generate much more stopping power, meaning there\u2019s less force required at the lever to generate the same amount of deceleration as on a rim brake. <\/p><p>This can be a big help on long and steep descents where \u2018arm pump\u2019 can eventually set in, or for heavier riders who have struggled to find enough power from traditional brakes (the same issue applies to heavier bikes, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-touring-bike-how-to-choose-the-right-one-for-you\/\">touring bikes<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/tandem-cycles-explained\">tandems<\/a>).<\/p><p>An added bonus is that braking power can be boosted (or tempered, depending on your preferences) by changing rotor sizes. And as many of you will know (possibly through painful experience), it\u2019s already quite easy to lock up a wheel on a bike with rim brakes \u2013 which brings us to advantage number two: control.<\/p><p>Disc brakes offer better modulation than rim brakes, meaning it\u2019s easier for the rider to precisely meter out how much clamping power is generated. Peak stopping power occurs just before the point of lock-up, and disc-equipped bikes are better equipped to flirt with that edge without crossing over. <\/p><p>Disc brake power also tends to be more linear and predictable than on rim brakes, and it\u2019s far more consistent in varying weather conditions, especially when compared with using rim brakes on carbon rims \u2013 a combination that yields notoriously poor performance in the wet, yet is also prone to overheating when dry.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-landscape_thumbnail\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1067\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2020\/09\/Scott-Addict-eRide-launch-14-d460e30.jpg\" alt=\"Cable are internally housed in the handlebar\/stam and head tube on the Scott Addict eRide\" class=\"wp-image-556322\" title=\"Scott Addict eRide launch 14\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Hydraulic brake hoses can be routed through tight bends internally without affecting brake performance. &#8211; Scott Sports<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Another advantage of hydraulic disc brakes exploited by bike makers is that you\u2019ll get the same braking efficiency regardless of how much the brake hose twists and turns.<\/p><p>That has enabled bike brands to develop complex internal routing and increase front-end integration, with hidden cable and hose runs from brake levers to point of action, and associated aerodynamic improvements.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1067\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2023\/10\/Specialized-S-Works-Tarmac-SL8-Dura-Ace-Di2-09-f24af1a.jpg\" alt=\"Specialized S-Works Tarmac SL8 Dura-Ace Di2 road bike\" class=\"wp-image-752350\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Disc brake rims can be made lighter and tyre clearance can be wider. &#8211; Ashley Quinlan \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Disc brake wheel rims can also be made lighter than rim brake wheels. In a rim brake design, the need to handle the compressive force of the brake pads, the expansive force of the tyre and the heat generated by braking require greater strength and heat dissipation than a disc brake rim, where it\u2019s just the tyre pressure that needs to be handled. <\/p><p>It\u2019s easier to optimise the rim\u2019s aerodynamics when designing for disc brakes too.<\/p><p>Likewise, disc brake frames can be built differently from rim brake frames. While there\u2019s a need to beef up the left fork leg and left-side chainstay, there\u2019s less force acting on other parts of the frame, which can be thinned out.<\/p><p>Bike makers have also learned how to make disc brake bikes as aerodynamic or more so than rim brake bikes.<\/p><h2 id=\"h-disc-brakes-vs-rim-brakes-why-rim-brakes-are-better-than-disc-brakes\">Disc brakes vs rim brakes: why rim brakes are better than disc brakes<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2400\" height=\"1600\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2023\/10\/Hill-climb-bikes-9-of-9-4973343.jpg\" alt=\"Sam Marshall\u2019s rim brake Pinarello Dogma F\" class=\"wp-image-752153\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">If you want the lightest possible bike, rim brakes still reign supreme, but only just. &#8211; Jack Luke \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The biggest advantage of rim brakes is weight. Although disc and rim brake components themselves aren\u2019t very different weight-wise, once you add the rotor, the system weight of a disc brake setup is typically a few hundred grams greater.<\/p><p>However, as we&#8217;ve covered in the previous section, wheels and frames for the latest generation of bikes can compensate for this. <\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1769\" height=\"1180\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2023\/11\/Andrew-Feathers-hill-climb-bike-1-4f6d77c.jpg\" alt=\"Andrew Feather's hill climb bike disc brakes \" class=\"wp-image-752621\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">By spending a lot of money, you can make a disc-brake bike exceedingly light. &#8211; Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Rim brakes still dominate the weight-obsessed UK hill climb scene. But in 2023, Andrew Feather became the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/tech\/2023-hill-climb-tech-trends\">first man to win the National Championships on a disc-brake equipped bike<\/a>. <\/p><p>The simplicity of cable-actuated rim brakes has plenty of upsides, though. Parts are generally cheap and widely available, and there\u2019s a very high degree of compatibility between multiple brands and vintages.<\/p><p>Rim brake systems are easy to repair when needed \u2013 even on the side of the road, or in the middle of nowhere with limited availability of spare parts. Rim brakes are also easy to adjust, unlike some disc brake systems, where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/workshop\/are-your-disc-brakes-rubbing-heres-how-to-silence-them\/\">disc brake rub<\/a> and squealing can be persistent issues.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2400\" height=\"1600\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2023\/10\/Hill-climb-bikes-3-of-9-2905a62.jpg\" alt=\"Rear rim brakes on hill climb bike\" class=\"wp-image-752147\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The low cost, simplicity and inter-compatibility of rim brakes maintains their popularity. &#8211; Jack Luke \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>On top of that, it&#8217;s worth pointing out that newer rim brake systems are better than ever, particularly on mid to high-end groupsets, and provide plenty of stopping power on tap.<\/p><p>There was an aesthetic argument that rim brake bikes are in some way prettier than disc brake ones, which was widely held when disc brake road bikes started to appear. <\/p><p>We\u2019d say that argument is now less relevant. The clean lines that disc brakes and internal routing allow, particularly around the front end of the bike, more than compensate for the rotor.<\/p><h2 id=\"h-how-disc-brakes-change-road-bikes\">How disc brakes change road bikes<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1067\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2023\/12\/Giant-Defy-Advanced-SL-0-12-1868496.jpeg\" alt=\"Giant Defy fork.\" class=\"wp-image-805737\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Disc brakes enable bike designers to easily increase clearances without dramatically affecting frame geometry. &#8211; Russell Burton \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Cast aside the various conspiracy theories surrounding why the bike industry seems so hot on disc brakes. Of course, companies would love to sell more bikes and gear than they do now \u2013 that goes without saying.<\/p><p>However, history has repeatedly demonstrated that major changes in bike technology have only shifted the types of bikes and gear that people buy, not the grand total.<\/p><p>The fact of the matter is that the bike industry sees the road disc movement as a way to advance bike technology forward in a meaningful way in one big step. Bikes equipped with brakes that work better are safer, full stop (pun intended).<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1067\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2023\/02\/Trek-Domane-AL4-10-f10ea3f.jpg\" alt=\"Trek Domane AL 4 Disc road bike\" class=\"wp-image-717937\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Contemporary endurance road bikes, with disc brakes, can fit up to 40mm-wide tyres. &#8211; Russell Burton \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Without having to worry about accommodating a caliper, disc-equipped road bikes can more easily fit higher-volume <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-road-bike-tyres\">road bike tyres <\/a>and wider rims for improved traction and performance on a more diverse mix of terrain. <\/p><p>That\u2019s opened up the chance for road riders to fit much wider tyres, with 28mm or more now being the norm on many road bikes, in place of the 23mm tyres of yesteryear. It\u2019s a change that can make for a much more comfortable, grippier ride, without a significant downside in speed or aerodynamics.<\/p><p>Since the seatstays no longer have to be reinforced to accommodate a rim brake, they can be made more flexible too, also augmenting comfort.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1067\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2023\/05\/Pivot-Vault-01-0ccb853.jpg\" alt=\"Pivot Vault gravel bike\" class=\"wp-image-727830\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Disc brakes have contributed to the gravel bike boom. &#8211; Russell Burton \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>These changes are also driving the boom in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-gravel-bikes\/\">gravel bikes<\/a> and more capable <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-endurance-road-bikes\">endurance road bikes<\/a>. <\/p><p>The move to disc brakes has come with a concurrent transition to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/road-bike-axle-standards\">thru-axles<\/a>. Although it\u2019s still faster to install and remove a wheel on a disc brake bike with quick-release skewers, there\u2019s still too much variability in how the wheels fit into the frame and fork. <\/p><p>This can lead to issues ranging from annoying (pads rubbing on rotors) to terrifying (unanticipated wheel ejections under hard braking).<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1280\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2022\/04\/colnago_c68_russburton_010-1-99e693d.jpg\" alt=\"Colnago C68 rear thru-axle and disc brake rotor \/ caliper\" class=\"wp-image-671672\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Thru-axle dropouts offer more security and more consistent wheel placement than traditional quick-release ones. &#8211; Russell Burton \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Thru-axles instead use closed dropouts that more consistently place the wheel in the same spot relative to the brake caliper, and are safer to use in general with less chance of user error. <\/p><p>They also provide a more rigid connection between the wheel and frame than quick-release hubs, so that a frame can be lighter without losing stiffness.<\/p><h2 id=\"h-road-disc-brake-compatibility-and-standards\">Road disc brake compatibility and standards<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-landscape_thumbnail\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1068\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2020\/04\/Wilier-Cento-10-NDR-09-f866e42.jpg\" alt=\"Wilier Cento 10 NDR 09\" class=\"wp-image-437316\" title=\"Wilier Cento 10 NDR 09\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Wilier Cento10 NDR frame is designed for direct-mount rim brakes or disc brakes, but it is an exceptionally small minority. &#8211; David Caudery \/ Immediate Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The switch to disc brakes means that bike makers have designed frames that are in general incompatible with rim brakes; you can\u2019t fit disc brakes to a rim brake frame and you can\u2019t swap from discs back to rim brakes, except in a few cases, such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/bikes\/road-bikes\/wilier-triestina-cento10-ndr-review\/\">Wilier Cento10 NDR<\/a>, which has been designed to allow you to fit either type of brake.<\/p><p>Disc brakes not only require dedicated fittings on the frame and fork for the caliper but, ideally, localised reinforcements to handle the added stresses applied. <\/p><p>Meanwhile, the wheels require hubs with either a six-bolt or Center-Lock splined interface to attach a rotor. There\u2019s a fair bit of flexibility for combining different makes and models of rim brakes, especially when you factor in smaller aftermarket brands, whereas disc brakes are much more limiting.<\/p><p>SRAM hydraulic disc brake calipers can only be paired with SRAM levers, for example, and the same goes for Shimano and Campagnolo.<\/p><p>Cable-actuated disc brakes from TRP, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/news\/paul-updates-klamper-with-flat-mount-version\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Paul Components<\/a>, SRAM\/Avid, Hayes and others offer more flexibility, but even then differing cable-pull ratios between the various makes, models and even years of levers have to be considered for optimal functionality. <\/p><h2 id=\"h-implications-for-long-term-maintenance-and-serviceability\">Implications for long-term maintenance and serviceability<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"9339\" height=\"6226\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2018\/08\/7RA7561-fcce946.jpg\" alt=\"Tools required to bleed Shimano hydraulic disc brakes\" class=\"wp-image-722025\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">You&#8217;ll need these tools to bleed Shimano hydraulic disc brakes. &#8211; Kaden Gardener \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Hydraulic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-mountain-bike-disc-brakes\/\">mountain bike disc brakes<\/a> have long been widely accepted in the off-road market, so there\u2019s plenty of history to go on in terms of long-term maintenance and serviceability, and it\u2019s a mixed bag.<\/p><p>On the one hand, hydraulic disc brakes are fully sealed from the elements and require little-to-no everyday maintenance \u2013 most of the time (cable-actuated disc brake maintenance is more in line with conventional rim brakes). There\u2019s also no housing for grit to get into and no cables to fray.<\/p><p>As an added bonus, they even self-adjust for pad wear so the lever pull stays consistent over time. Aside from occasionally <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/workshop\/how-to-bleed-shimano-disc-brakes\/\">bleeding the system<\/a> with fresh fluid \u2013 most companies recommend doing this about once a year \u2013 there\u2019s not much to it.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"9158\" height=\"6106\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2018\/08\/7RA7553-8b9eef7.jpg\" alt=\"Brake bleed funnel on Shimano shifter with mineral oil\" class=\"wp-image-722024\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Brake bleeding is an involved process, which fortunately shouldn&#8217;t be a regular job. &#8211; Kaden Gardener \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Bleeding hydraulic systems requires special tools, with a full home kit costing about \u00a345 \/ $55 (plus extra for fluid annually). Alternatively, having a shop do it will cost about \u00a340 \/ $60 each year, give or take.<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/disc-brake-pads\">Disc brake pads<\/a> also tend to be slightly more expensive (about \u00a350 \/ $80 vs \u00a340 \/ $60 per full set of good ones), but the real-world differences are quite minor when you factor longevity into the equation. Keep in mind, however, that regularly riding in wet, gritty conditions can skew those figures dramatically.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"3500\" height=\"2333\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2023\/10\/Dannielle-Watkinsons-Tarmac-SL3-7-1ec3e21.jpg\" alt=\"Dannielle Watkinson's Tarmac SL3 7\" class=\"wp-image-752112\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Rim brake maintenance is fairly simple compared to disc brakes. &#8211; Jack Luke \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Conventional rim brake cable and housing is far from cheap though, especially if you prefer to use higher-grade stuff (as you should&#8230;), so while rim brakes hold an advantage here, the differences aren\u2019t as dramatic as they might seem.<\/p><p>If something actually breaks, however, rim brakes hold a big edge since it\u2019s much easier to diagnose \u2013 and repair \u2013 a problem. <\/p><p>For most users, hydraulic disc brakes will be akin to electronic equipment: while you can often figure out an issue on your own, most cyclists won\u2019t have the equipment or knowledge to do so.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-landscape_thumbnail\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"845\" height=\"562\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2019\/03\/1449186738362-h7chazwbdm0e-1000-90-287f57c-e1611763535109.jpg\" alt=\"1449186738362-h7chazwbdm0e-1000-90-287f57c\" class=\"wp-image-301835\" title=\"1449186738362-h7chazwbdm0e-1000-90-287f57c\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"> Disc brake pads don&#8217;t cost much more than good rim brake pads.<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>If you\u2019re the type to run things into the ground though, keep in mind that there are definite upsides to not subjecting your rims to regular wear. <\/p><p>Whereas it\u2019s very expensive to replace a rim that\u2019s been worn down from long-term braking, disc brakes only require a new rotor. Speaking of which, those rotors are also less likely to go out of true than a rim.<\/p><p>Will disc brakes replace rim brakes completely?
