There aren\u2019t any fancy claims about the performance of this steel, but it\u2019s good stout stuff, ready for a life of thrashing, and weighs 3.2kg (Large).<\/p><p>The frame is built for 140 to 160mm-travel single-crown forks, with a geometry based around these longer-travel figures.<\/p><p>The head angle is slack, at 64 degrees with a 140mm fork, while the seat angle is middle-of-the-road at 75.5 degrees.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1067\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2023\/12\/Ragley-Big-Wig-front-triangle.jpg\" alt=\"Ragley Big Wig hardtail mountain bike frame\" class=\"wp-image-807708\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The front end is fairly long and slack. &#8211; Andy Lloyd \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>If you were to fit a longer-travel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-mountain-bike-suspension-forks\">suspension fork<\/a>, the angles would slacken by up to a degree with a 160mm fork.<\/p><p>My Large test bike has a 480mm reach, which is long but not exceptionally so. This would shorten a touch if you were running a longer fork.<\/p><p>The chainstays are 435mm long. Andy Lloyd \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Only three sizes \u2013 M, L and XL \u2013 are offered. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/bikes\/mountain-bikes\/ragley-blue-pig-review-2\">Ragley\u2019s Blue Pig<\/a> model, with 27.5in wheels, offers a size Small, so this may be more appropriate if you\u2019re at the lower limits of a Medium.<\/p><p>If you want smooth lines, you\u2019ll need to look elsewhere, because the Big Wig is festooned with easily accessible external cable routing along the top and down tubes, ISCG05 mounts for a chainguide, braces and gussets.<\/p><p>A PM160 brake mount sits right at the back, a Velcro chainslap protector runs along the driveside chainstay and a bolt-thru axle is provided.<\/p><h2>Ragley Big Wig build details<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1067\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2023\/12\/Ragley-Big-Wig-rear-brake-mount.jpg\" alt=\"I tested the Ragley Big Wig hardtail mountain bike with Hope Tech4 X2 brakes\" class=\"wp-image-807712\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A Post Mount rear brake mount sits around a neatly sculpted dropout. &#8211; Andy Lloyd \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>This review is for the frame only, though two stock builds (\u00a32,199.99 and \u00a32,499.99) are listed on Ragley\u2019s website.<\/p><p>I built this test rig up with suitable parts, including a 140mm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/components\/forks\/suspension-forks\/manitou-mattoc-pro-suspension-fork-review-2\/\">Manitou Mattoc Pro<\/a> fork, SRAM AXS drivetrain, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/components\/brakes\/disc-brake-systems\/hope-tech-4-x2-brakes-review\/\">Hope Pro4 X2 brakes<\/a> and a range of wide alloy wheels. <\/p><p>Stout tyres were fitted front and rear, in the form of a pair of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/components\/tyres\/mountain-bike-tyres\/schwalbe-magic-mary-supertrail-addix-ultrasoft-evo-tle-29x2-4-review\">Schwalbe Magic Marys<\/a> in a 2.4in width.<\/p><h2>Ragley Big Wig performance<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1067\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2023\/12\/Ragley-Big-Wig-low-slung.jpg\" alt=\"Male rider in yellow top riding the Ragley Big Wig hardtail mountain bike\" class=\"wp-image-807711\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The low-slung geometry feels great in a well-supported corner. &#8211; Andy Lloyd \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Ragley\u2019s designers clearly haven\u2019t been looking through the geometry archives, because the Big Wig has a shape that\u2019s firmly in the present.<\/p><p>The roomy front end and mid-length 435mm chainstays give a balanced position over the bike when you\u2019re climbing. <\/p><p>The front end doesn\u2019t wander about too much when it&#8217;s steep, and the rear balances traction and tightness to help you get up awkward pitches.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1067\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2023\/12\/Ragley-Big-Wig-brace.jpg\" alt=\"Ragley Big Wig hardtail mountain bike frame\" class=\"wp-image-807705\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The seat tube brace allows for a heavily dropped top tube. &#8211; Andy Lloyd \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The seat angle might not be crazy steep, but with the fork settled into its sag, the bike naturally steepens a touch.<\/p><p>As such, I didn\u2019t find the bike uncomfortable or unwieldy uphill.<\/p><p>When it comes to descending, the Big Wig brings a smile to your face.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1067\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2023\/12\/Ragley-Big-Wig-headtube-badge.jpg\" alt=\"Ragley Big Wig hardtail mountain bike frame\" class=\"wp-image-807710\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Everyone loves a proper head tube badge. &#8211; Andy Lloyd \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The bottom bracket is slung low under the axles, and with the slack head angle and fairly long reach working together, the bike loves to be slapped into corners.<\/p><p>There\u2019s no noticeable twist as you load the steel frame up, but at the same time there\u2019s clearly enough give in the chassis to iron out buzz and front-end harshness.<\/p><p>At the rear, there\u2019s decent mud room for broad tyres, while the steel construction takes the sting out of harsh hits. <\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1067\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2023\/12\/Ragley-Big-Wig-corner.jpg\" alt=\"Male rider in yellow top riding the Ragley Big Wig hardtail mountain bike\" class=\"wp-image-807707\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Despite its heft, the Big Wig is nimble. &#8211; Andy Lloyd \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>It\u2019s not as beautifully zingy as a lighter frame built out of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/bike-frame-materials\">top-spec steel<\/a>, but it\u2019s no blunderbuss either and certainly encourages you to take creative lines.<\/p><p>Though I tested it with a fork at the lower end of its travel bracket, on steep terrain I found the length and angles gave me confidence when picking through gnarled rocks and roots.<\/p><p>I set the fork up with a touch more air than I would on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/hardtail-versus-full-suspension-mountain-bike\">full-suspension bike<\/a> and ensured I had plenty of mid-stroke support to help keep the front propped up.<\/p><h2>How does the Ragley Big Wig compare to the Marin El Roy?<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1067\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2023\/12\/Ragley-Big-Wig-Marin-El-Roy.jpeg\" alt=\"Pack shot of the Marin El Roy hardtail mountain bike\" class=\"wp-image-807704\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Marin El Roy is an aggressive enduro hardtail. &#8211; Russell Burton \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Both the Big Wig and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/bikes\/mountain-bikes\/marin-el-roy-review\/\">Marin El Roy<\/a> have been built with aggressive trails in mind, and consequently, their steel construction means they\u2019re both heavy bikes.<\/p><p>The Marin\u2019s geometry is as wild as it comes, with a long reach (480mm or 510mm in the Regular or Grande sizes offered), slack 63-degree head angle and steep 78-degree seat angle.<\/p><p>On all counts, it\u2019s more extreme than the Big Wig.<\/p><p>Both bikes excel at descending, however the El Roy&#8217;s shape gives it as much stability and straight-line speed as any <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-hardtail-mountain-bikes\">hardtail mountain bike<\/a> I\u2019ve ever ridden.<\/p><p>The Big Wig is more versatile, and slightly more agile too, making it more of an all-rounder.<\/p><p>On the steepest trails, the El Roy thrives, but the Big Wig is more fun to ride on anything approaching \u2018mild\u2019.<\/p><p>On climbs, the El Roy takes the win, with the steep seat angle making a real difference to how the bike feels under your legs.
