Brand unveils three direct-drive models with competitive claimed accuracy and maximum power <\/p>

Van Rysel has entered the smart trainer market, unveiling three direct-drive models ranging from entry-level to mid-tier.\u00a0<\/p>

The range starts with the Interactive Turbo Trainer D100, which is priced at \u00a3239.99 \/ \u20ac250. This makes it one of the cheapest direct-drive smart trainers available.<\/p>

The top-tier D900 is also competitively priced at \u00a3549.99 \/ \u20ac600.<\/p>

Following the return of Decathlon to the WorldTour<\/a>, the news signals its in-house brand\u2019s ambition to enhance its appeal to performance-oriented cyclists.\u00a0<\/p>

Decathlon has long sold indoor cycling accessories<\/a> and Van Rysel-branded turbo trainers, but not smart trainers until now.<\/p>

The smart trainers are currently unavailable in the US.\u00a0<\/p>

Van Rysel Interactive Turbo Trainer D100\u00a0<\/h3>
You usually have to keep the rear wheel on at this price. – Decathlon<\/figcaption><\/figure>
At \u00a3239.99 \/ \u20ac250, the entry-level D100 costs slightly less than the Wahoo Kickr Snap (\u00a3299.99 \/ $300) \u2013 a wheel-on smart trainer<\/p>
Wahoo\u2019s cheapest smart trainer has much higher maximum power and simulated gradient of 1,500 watts and 12 per cent respectively, though.\u00a0<\/p>
The D100 has Bluetooth connectivity but not ANT\uff0b, like the Kickr Snap. This means it won\u2019t be able to connect simultaneously to a bike computer<\/a> and indoor cycling app<\/a>.<\/p>
Its claimed power accuracy of \uff0b\/- 5 per cent isn\u2019t competitive with the best direct-drive smart trainers<\/a> or power meters<\/a>, but is more typical of wheel-on smart trainers at this price point.<\/p>

The Tacx Flow Smart<\/a> is claimed to be accurate to \uff0b\/- 5 per cent, for example, while the Wahoo Kickr Snap is claimed to be accurate to \uff0b\/- 3 per cent.<\/p>
The primary draw for many will be the possibility of getting a direct-drive trainer at an extremely competitive price, however.<\/p>
Typically, direct-drive smart trainers offer a more realistic ride experience, because the bike is mounted directly to the trainer (meaning there\u2019s no chance of tyre slip, as with wheel-on trainers) and they usually have larger flywheels, which offer a greater degree of inertia.<\/p>
Van Rysel Interactive Turbo Trainer D500<\/h3>

At \u00a3449.99 \/ \u20ac450, the Van Rysel Interactive Turbo Trainer D500 is similarly priced to the Zwift Hub<\/a>, but does not come with a cassette<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>
On paper, the spec is slightly less impressive than Zwift\u2019s first smart trainer.\u00a0<\/p>
Van Rysel claims the D900 simulates gradients of up to 12 per cent and its maximum power is 1,500 watts, versus the Zwift Hub\u2019s 16 per cent and 1,800 watts.\u00a0<\/p>

Claimed power accuracy is competitive at \uff0b\/- 2 per cent, though \u2013 0.5 per cent better than on the Zwift Hub.\u00a0<\/p>
According to the brand, it’s \u201ccompletely silent\u201d while in use (though, naturally, riders will still have to contend with drivetrain noise while pedalling).<\/p>

The D500’s flywheel weighs a reasonable 4.7kg. – Decathlon<\/figcaption><\/figure>
Van Rysel says the 4.7kg flywheel ensures a smooth and realistic ride feel. This is the same as on the Zwift Hub.<\/p>
The D500 is supplied with a front-wheel riser block for added stability.\u00a0<\/p>
Van Rysel Interactive Turbo Trainer D900<\/h3>

The D900 is Van Rysel\u2019s premium model, but still costs less than half as much as some of the best smart trainers<\/a>. We have one in to review, so we\u2019ll report back on how it stacks up against the rest of the market.\u00a0<\/p>
It ups maximum power to 2,000 watts, measures power to a claimed \uff0b\/- 2 per cent accuracy and can simulate gradients of up to 20 per cent.\u00a0<\/p>

These claimed figures are the same as the highly rated Saris H3<\/a> for \u00a3200 less.\u00a0<\/p>
At 9.1kg, the H3’s flywheel is nearly double the weight of the D900\u2019s (5.2kg), however.<\/p>
Like the D500, Van Rysel says the D900 is silent and comes with a front-wheel riser block. A cassette is not included.<\/p> <\/body><\/html>\n
