{"id":58647,"date":"2024-01-18T01:01:00","date_gmt":"2024-01-18T00:01:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/c48dda82-6e77-4147-b663-c243b3f4964e"},"modified":"2024-01-18T01:59:41","modified_gmt":"2024-01-18T00:59:41","slug":"uk-bike-sales-expected-to-reach-1-billion-in-2024-with-ebikes-leading-the-charge","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/cyclingplus\/rss_feed\/uk-bike-sales-expected-to-reach-1-billion-in-2024-with-ebikes-leading-the-charge\/","title":{"rendered":"UK bike sales expected to reach \u00a31 billion in 2024 with ebikes leading the charge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\">Britons predicted to buy 2.1 million bikes in 2024 <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Stan Portus\n      <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Thursday, 18 January 2024 at 00:01 AM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>The UK bicycle market is on the road to recovery, with sales of new bikes set to reach almost \u00a31 billion in 2024, according to market research firm Mintel.<\/p><p>Mintel forecasts new bicycle sales will climb 12 per cent in 2024, with Britons set to buy 2.1 million bikes.\u00a0<\/p><p>The research follows a rocky period in the British bicycle market, with declining sales since 2020 and familiar names such as Orange and Wiggle <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/news\/wiggle-chain-reaction-insolvency\">entering administration<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p><p>Last year, bike sales fell by 11 per cent to an estimated 1.9 million, down 42 per cent from a record high in 2020 of 3.3 million, according to Mintel.<\/p><p>However, 2024 looks to be more prosperous for the UK bike industry, particularly thanks to the rising popularity of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-electric-bikes\">electric bikes<\/a> and more middle-aged women showing an interest in cycling.\u00a0<\/p><h2 id=\"h-cost-of-living-spurs-cycling\">Cost of living spurs cycling\u00a0<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Brits are cycling more to save on costs. &#8211; Russell Burton \/ Immediate Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The cost of living crisis has had varying impacts on the cycling industry.\u00a0<\/p><p>Mintel\u2019s leisure research category director Paul Davies says: \u201cRising living costs have severely impacted demand for new bikes and ebikes, which had already been suffering due to COVID-19 related supply-side issues.\u201d\u00a0<\/p><p>The national trade association for the cycling industry in the UK, the Bicycle Association (BA), revealed in August last year that the cycling market had hit its biggest slump in two decades.\u00a0<\/p><p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/bike-sales-hit-new-historic-low-as-cost-of-living-crisis-bites\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Cycling Weekly<\/a>, John Worthington, head of insights at the BA, said the dip in demand was compounded by the cost of living crisis.\u00a0<\/p><p>Despite the decrease in sales, Mintel says the increased cost of living has also spurred an uptake in cycling. Mintel says 34 per cent of Brits are cycling more than they did a year ago to reduce spending on fuel or public transport. <\/p><p>This echoes research conducted by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/cycle-to-work-scheme-everything-you-need-to-know\">Cycle to Work provider<\/a> Cyclescheme in 2022, which claimed you can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/long-reads\/how-much-money-can-you-save-by-cycling\">save \u00a3750 per year by cycling to work<\/a> or more, depending on where you live.\u00a0<\/p><p>Cyclescheme also found 46 per cent of people would rather cycle to work than spend money on travel and 67 per cent of Britons started or considered cycling to work to decrease travel costs.\u00a0<\/p><p>The advocacy group Cycling UK similarly found an increase in prices at the pump led to an uptick in cycling.<\/p><p>Mintel says it is only now inflation has begun to ease and there have been signs of wage growth that recovery in demand for new bikes is under way.<\/p><h2 id=\"h-popularity-of-ebikes-and-buying-second-hand\">Popularity of ebikes \u2013 and buying second-hand<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1067\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2023\/10\/Vitus-E-Mythique-LT-VRX-02-9d2ef21.jpg\" alt=\"Vitus E-Mythique LT VRX electric mountain bike\" class=\"wp-image-751703\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Electric mountain bikes were the only sub-category of ebike up in 2023, according to the Bicycle Association. &#8211; Steve Behr \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Mintel previously revealed electric bike sales accounted for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/long-reads\/the-rise-of-electric-bikes\">23 per cent of bicycle sales<\/a> in the UK in 2020.<\/p><p>Based on a survey of 2,000 people, Mintel predicts electric bikes will be the most popular type of bike cyclists plan to buy in 2024, even if they account for a slightly smaller proportion of the market.<\/p><p>\u201cNearly a fifth (19%) of \u200b\u200bthose who plan to purchase a bicycle for themselves in the next 12 months plan to buy an ebike,\u201d Mintel says.\u00a0<\/p><p>Mintel hasn\u2019t elaborated on what type of ebike people intend to buy. But last year <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-electric-mountain-bikes\">eMTBs<\/a> were the only sub-category of ebikes that were up compared to 2022, according to the BA.<\/p><p>Mintel has also found 49 per cent of current and potential cyclists agree they are more likely to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/how-to-buy-a-used-or-second-hand-bike-online\">buy a second-hand bike<\/a> than a year ago.<\/p><h2 id=\"h-overcoming-the-gender-gap\">Overcoming the gender gap<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1333\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2022\/11\/756A2182-daede87.jpg\" alt=\"Woman riding a Cannondale Scalpel HT Carbon 4 hardtail mountain bike\" class=\"wp-image-704387\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u201cOvercoming the considerable gender gap in cycling has been a challenge the industry has long struggled with\u201d \u2013 Paul Davies. &#8211; Finlay Anderson \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Mintel says the increase in cycling during the Covid-19 pandemic has \u201cdone nothing to narrow the long-standing gender imbalance in participation\u201d in cycling, with 41 per cent of men currently cycling compared to 22 per cent of women.\u00a0<\/p><p>However, there is now notable interest in cycling among women aged 16 to 64 years old.
