{"id":59763,"date":"2024-02-13T16:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-02-13T15:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/c017f6e6-d2d2-4178-b04f-dacf59fb006b"},"modified":"2024-02-13T17:59:42","modified_gmt":"2024-02-13T16:59:42","slug":"why-i-bought-a-pro-bike-with-rim-brakes-in-2024-joe-norledges-dream-giant-tcr-advanced-sl","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/cyclingplus\/rss_feed\/why-i-bought-a-pro-bike-with-rim-brakes-in-2024-joe-norledges-dream-giant-tcr-advanced-sl\/","title":{"rendered":"Why I bought a pro bike with rim brakes in 2024 | Joe Norledge\u2019s dream Giant TCR Advanced SL"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\">Uncle Joe makes the case for rim brakes <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Joe Norledge\n      <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Tuesday, 13 February 2024 at 15:00 PM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>2023 was a turbulent year for the bike industry, but nothing sent cycling media into a greater feeding frenzy than when the men\u2019s UK National Hill Climb Championships were won on a disc-brake equipped road bike.<\/p><p>In the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/pro-bike\/2023-hill-climb-nationals-tech\">UK hill climb scene<\/a>, weight almost always trumps aero \u2013 it was, in some ways, the last area where high-end rim brake road bikes remained more competitive.\u00a0<\/p><p>The fact the bike in question was being piloted by arguably <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/fitness-and-training\/andrew-feather-hill-climb-champion\">the best amateur hill climber in the world<\/a> may have contributed a tiny bit, but if you looked on any cycling media site during early November 2023, it was official \u2013 rim brakes were finally RIP.<\/p><p>So, it may come as a surprise to you that, with the ink on the death certificate for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/rim-brake-road-bikes\">rim brake road bikes<\/a> not yet dry, there are still people, like me, buying them.<\/p><p>And I didn\u2019t just go out and buy any old rim-brake bike, I went for an all-time classic \u2013 the Giant TCR.\u00a0<\/p><p>I also decided to cause as much damage to my bank balance as possible by buying the top-spec Advanced SL model (yes, the one with the funny seatpost) and speccing it with Campagnolo Super Record.\u00a0<\/p><p>\u201cBut why would you buy such outmoded technology you <em>idiot?\u201d, <\/em>I hear you ask. Here, I\u2019ll make my case\u2026<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The LAST High-End Rim Brake Bike?\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/YRWgY4kxSWo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-a-giant-tcr-advanced-sl\">Why a Giant TCR Advanced SL?<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Campagnolo&#8217;s rim brakes offer incredible modulation, power and lever feel.<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>I first rode a Giant TCR Advanced SL in 2019 and fell in love with its combination of all-around ability and low weight.\u00a0<\/p><p>It\u2019s also highly regarded by professional bike testers worldwide, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/2020-vs-2021-giant-tcr-advanced-sl\/\">with BikeRadar\u2019s Warren Rossiter paying to keep his back in 2020<\/a>. Warren has ridden hundreds of high-end road bikes during his career, so if he likes something, it\u2019s usually a good sign.\u00a0<\/p><p>I believe it\u2019s also one of the last truly pro-level bikes you can buy with rim brakes.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2400\" height=\"1600\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/02\/Joe-Norledges-Giant-TCR-rim-brake-bike-12-of-18.jpg\" alt=\"Joe Norledge's Giant TCR rim brake bike \u2013 the last pro-level rim brake road bike\" class=\"wp-image-816555\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">This generation of the TCR could very well be one of the last top-spec carbon rim-brake road bikes approved for use by the UCI. &#8211; Jack Luke \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The only other two I can think of are the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/news\/pinarello-dogma-f\">Pinarello Dogma F<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/bikes\/road-bikes\/colnago-c68-dura-ace-review\">Colnago 68<\/a>.<\/p><p>This TCR variant was first ridden in 2019, and became available to the public in 2020. As such, I suspect Giant will likely release a new TCR during 2024. Given the overall trajectory of road bike tech, this is unlikely to be available with rim brakes.<\/p><p>All this means 2024 could be one of the last chances for anyone to buy a new high-end rim-brake race bike from an actual bike shop.\u00a0<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-but-why-rim-brakes\">But <em>why<\/em> rim brakes?<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2400\" height=\"1600\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/02\/Joe-Norledges-Giant-TCR-rim-brake-bike-17-of-18.jpg\" alt=\"Joe Norledge's Giant TCR rim brake bike \u2013 the last pro-level rim brake road bike\" class=\"wp-image-816560\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Even if I&#8217;m not actually fast, at least I&#8217;ll feel fast reliving my hill-climb glories of old. &#8211; Jack Luke \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>I competed in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/fitness-and-training\/how-to-become-a-hill-climbing-star\">hill climbs<\/a> seriously until 2018. As my main racing focus, it\u2019s been hard to shake the idea that lighter is always better.<\/p><p>So, even though it\u2019s now 2024, and I\u2019m a much older, slower, greyer, self-employed father of two, a lightweight rim-brake bike still gets my pulse racing.\u00a0<\/p><p>Being more time-pressed than ever also means I want a bike that involves minimal difficulty when it comes to home maintenance.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2400\" height=\"1600\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/02\/Joe-Norledges-Giant-TCR-rim-brake-bike-5-of-18.jpg\" alt=\"Joe Norledge's Giant TCR rim brake bike \u2013 the last pro-level rim brake road bike\" class=\"wp-image-816548\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Rim brakes are easier to maintain than disc brakes. &#8211; Jack Luke \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/road-disc-brakes-everything-you-need-to-know\">Road bike disc brakes<\/a> may offer theoretically better performance but, speaking from experience, they are nowhere near as simple to maintain.\u00a0<\/p><p>Rim brakes probably need more regular<em> <\/em>maintenance, but it\u2019s usually a 10-minute job, rather than 30, and doesn\u2019t require me to use a syringe.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2400\" height=\"1600\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/02\/Joe-Norledges-Giant-TCR-rim-brake-bike-11-of-18.jpg\" alt=\"Joe Norledge's Giant TCR rim brake bike \u2013 the last pro-level rim brake road bike\" class=\"wp-image-816554\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">This generation of TCR strikes the right balance between integration and livability. &#8211; Jack Luke \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Bike brands aren\u2019t spending any R&amp;D cash on rim-brake bikes, which means they haven\u2019t fallen victim to some of the less desirable traits of the modern-day road bike. Specifically, I mean, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/tech\/the-truth-about-internal-cable-routing\">hiding every cable internally<\/a> within the bike.<\/p><p>Internal everything might make me 0.001 per cent faster over 40km, but it will probably take me 110 per cent longer when it comes to work on my bike.\u00a0<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-unbeatable-looks\">Unbeatable looks<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2400\" height=\"1600\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/02\/Joe-Norledges-Giant-TCR-rim-brake-bike-2-of-18.jpg\" alt=\"Joe Norledge's Giant TCR rim brake bike \u2013 the last pro-level rim brake road bike\" class=\"wp-image-816544\" style=\"width:840px;height:auto\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">I think we can all agree my TCR cuts a handsome silhouette. &#8211; Jack Luke \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Rim-brake road bikes also look much, much nicer than their disc-equipped counterparts.<\/p><p>You could be forgiven for thinking I sound like a nostalgic luddite who should have gone out and bought himself something more sensible\/appropriate for his age and ability \u2013 perhaps a mid-range <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-gravel-bikes\">gravel bike<\/a> \u2013 so you probably shouldn\u2019t listen to me. But I call foul!<\/p><p>Everyone likes to say they buy their dream bike purely on its performance or mechanical merits. However, I\u2019m pretty sure (even though it\u2019s not cool to admit it) a large proportion of buying decisions come down to looks and marketing. I count myself in that group.\u00a0<\/p><p>With its classic lines, rounded tubes and relatively subdued paintjob, I think my TCR looks amazing. And that will probably motivate me to get out on a cold Saturday morning more than anything else.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2400\" height=\"1600\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/02\/Joe-Norledges-Giant-TCR-rim-brake-bike-15-of-18.jpg\" alt=\"Joe Norledge's Giant TCR rim brake bike \u2013 the last pro-level rim brake road bike\" class=\"wp-image-816558\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Sure, the front end isn&#8217;t as neat as a modern fully integrated bike, but I simply don&#8217;t care. &#8211; Jack Luke \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>It may not be as fast as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/bikes\/road-bikes\/cervelo-s5-force-etap-axs-review\">Cervelo S5<\/a> that won the 2023 Tour. However, with its bulging shapes, proprietary standards and aero optimisation, I think the S5 looks absolutely rubbish (sorry Cerv\u00e9lo!).\u00a0<\/p><p>Again, it\u2019s not cool to admit, but nothing kills motivation more than having a bike you think looks horrible, even if it is fast.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-dream-groupset-for-a-dream-bike\">A dream groupset for a dream bike<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2400\" height=\"1600\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/02\/Joe-Norledges-Giant-TCR-rim-brake-bike-3-of-18.jpg\" alt=\"Joe Norledge's Giant TCR rim brake bike \u2013 the last pro-level rim brake road bike\" class=\"wp-image-816545\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Campagnolo Super Record was a must-have for what is, essentially, my dream bike. &#8211; Jack Luke \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>What could be one of the last truly pro-level rim-brake road bikes, of course, deserves a fittingly high-end build.\u00a0<\/p><p>There\u2019s no doubt <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/components\/groupsets\/groupset-road\/campagnolo-super-record-wireless\">Campagnolo Super Record<\/a> is an indulgent choice for almost any build. After all, Shimano 105 is good enough for most situations.<\/p><p>However, I wanted to keep the weight low, while keeping the build 100 per cent mechanical.\u00a0<\/p><p>So, no beeps or batteries \u2013 just the comforting clunk of cables and friction. This meant Super Record was the way to go.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2400\" height=\"1600\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/02\/Joe-Norledges-Giant-TCR-rim-brake-bike-14-of-18.jpg\" alt=\"Joe Norledge's Giant TCR rim brake bike \u2013 the last pro-level rim brake road bike\" class=\"wp-image-816557\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">I love the profile of Campagnolo&#8217;s hoods. &#8211; Jack Luke \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>I\u2019m a huge fan of the deep, contoured shape of Campagnolo hoods, and I still like the thumb-actuated downshift lever.\u00a0<\/p><p>It\u2019s not for everyone, but I feel I can get much more precise shifting when the shift levers are separate, as they are on mechanical Super Record.\u00a0<\/p><p>I love the organic appearance of mechanical Super Record, and that also played a huge part in my decision-making.\u00a0<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-perfectly-mismatched-build\">A perfectly mismatched build<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2400\" height=\"1600\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/02\/Joe-Norledges-Giant-TCR-rim-brake-bike-4-of-18.jpg\" alt=\"Joe Norledge's Giant TCR rim brake bike \u2013 the last pro-level rim brake road bike\" class=\"wp-image-816547\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">I&#8217;m I know it&#8217;s hard to believe, but there are people out there who still want to ride on 25mm tyres. &#8211; Jack Luke \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Bora Ultra 35s are an old-school wheel choice. They\u2019re not particularly wide or aero but, in this case, they compliment the overall build perfectly, and coming in around 1,360g, are light enough for carbon clinchers.\u00a0<\/p><p>For tyres, I went with a set of 25mm Michelin Power Cup Competition 4s in tanwall.\u00a0<\/p><p>Again, 25mm is a strange choice in 2023, but old habits die hard \u2013 the hill climber in me still wanted something fairly lightweight. They also size up nicely on the aforementioned Bora Ultra 35s.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2400\" height=\"1600\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/02\/Joe-Norledges-Giant-TCR-rim-brake-bike-6-of-18.jpg\" alt=\"Joe Norledge's Giant TCR rim brake bike \u2013 the last pro-level rim brake road bike\" class=\"wp-image-816549\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Not all of the build is flashy \u2013 this Pro Turnix saddle has been swapped between a number of bikes.<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The rest of the finishing kit comes from old BikeRadar hill climb builds, so once again, lightweight with plenty of carbon.\u00a0<\/p><p>The weight? Just about bob-on the UCI minimum weight limit at 6.92kg, which makes it perfect for all that UCI racing I won\u2019t be doing.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-epic-plans-for-2024-not-quite\">Epic plans for 2024? Not quite<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2400\" height=\"1600\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/02\/Joe-Norledges-Giant-TCR-rim-brake-bike-18-of-18.jpg\" alt=\"Joe Norledge's Giant TCR rim brake bike \u2013 the last pro-level rim brake road bike\" class=\"wp-image-816561\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">I know I&#8217;ll always have my dream road bike waiting for me when I take up hill climbing again (or, if I want to ride around with my friends for an hour and drink a coffee after). &#8211; Jack Luke \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>If my comments on looks didn\u2019t annoy you enough, wait until you hear what I plan to do with the bike.\u00a0<\/p><p>If I\u2019m being really honest, I probably won\u2019t be riding this bike that much.\u00a0<\/p><p>Being a self-employed father of two means finding time (and motivation) to ride can be tricky. So, the chances are, this bike will spend more time in the shed than it deserves.\u00a0<\/p><p>When I do get out, it\u2019ll be to cruise around the Mendips with some pals from BikeRadar at a far more subdued pace, compared to my hill climbing days of old.\u00a0<\/p><p>For me, that\u2019s fine. The TCR may not have been the bike I should have bought, but it\u2019s the one that makes me the most happy every time I get a chance to ride.
