{"id":59809,"date":"2024-02-20T14:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-02-20T13:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/0d87cd5a-351b-4189-b891-37f93725e055"},"modified":"2024-02-20T14:59:53","modified_gmt":"2024-02-20T13:59:53","slug":"campagnolo-ekar-gt-is-the-brands-widest-ranging-gravel-groupset-ever-and-its-cheaper-than-ekar","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/cyclingplus\/rss_feed\/campagnolo-ekar-gt-is-the-brands-widest-ranging-gravel-groupset-ever-and-its-cheaper-than-ekar\/","title":{"rendered":"Campagnolo Ekar GT is the brand\u2019s widest-ranging gravel groupset ever \u2013 and it&#8217;s cheaper than Ekar"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\">Campagnolo also launches Zonda GT gravel wheels\u00a0 <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Oscar Huckle\n      <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Tuesday, 20 February 2024 at 13:00 PM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>Campagnolo has announced Ekar GT, a new 13-speed gravel groupset designed to sit as a more affordable option below current Ekar.\u00a0<\/p><p>Ekar GT (Gran Turismo) is designed to be more \u201cadventure-ready\u201d, with a wider-ranging 10-48t cassette and a smaller 36t chainring option.<\/p><p>By comparison, the easiest gearing you can achieve on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/components\/groupsets\/campagnolo-ekar-groupset-review\">Ekar<\/a> is a 38t chainring paired with a 10-44t cassette.\u00a0<\/p><p>The Italian brand has also revamped the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/a-complete-guide-to-rear-derailleurs\">rear derailleur<\/a> and updated the shifter ergonomics.\u00a0<\/p><p>The new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/gravel-bike-groupsets\">gravel groupset<\/a> is claimed to weigh 2,700g (although Campagnolo hasn\u2019t specified the exact gear ratios and crank lengths used). By comparison, Ekar is claimed to weigh 2,385g in its lightest configuration.\u00a0<\/p><p>The groupset will retail for \u00a31,211 \/ $1,599 \/ \u20ac1,490 and will be available from March in the UK. Australian pricing is to be confirmed.\u00a0<\/p><p>Alongside the new groupset, Campagnolo is also launching a new Zonda GT wheelset. It\u2019s a far cry from the current road-oriented Zonda, undergoing a gravel makeover with a wider 23mm internal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/a-complete-guide-to-rear-derailleurs\">rim width<\/a>.<\/p><p>Let\u2019s take a look at each of the new Ekar GT components in turn.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Campagnolo Ekar GT Groupset: Cheaper With Wider Gear Range\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SCjc17l9a_0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-campagnolo-ekar-gt-shifters\">Campagnolo Ekar GT shifters\u00a0<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Scott Windsor \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Campagnolo says it has improved the Ekar GT Ergopower shifters to excel in \u201call gravel applications\u201d.\u00a0<\/p><p>For those worried Campagnolo would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/opinion\/the-death-of-campagnolos-thumb-shifter\">ditch the thumb shifter<\/a> as it did on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/tech\/campagnolo-super-record-wireless-first-look\">Super Record Wireless<\/a>, you can breathe a sigh of relief. The shifters continue to use the brand\u2019s traditional paddle behind the brake lever for downshifts (easier gears), and the C-shaped thumb shifter for upshifts (harder gears).\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2400\" height=\"1600\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/02\/Campagnolo-Ekar-GT-new-gravel-bike-groupset-28-9.jpg\" alt=\"Campagnolo Ekar GT shifters on Basso Palta \" class=\"wp-image-817686\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Scott Windsor \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The C-shaped thumb shifter was introduced on Ekar to ease shifting from the drops and, like Ekar, you can downshift up to three gears at a time, but only upshift one. Campagnolo limits the upshift capability to avoid accidentally mis-shifting on more technical terrain.\u00a0<\/p><p>The lever body shape appears slightly smaller in height than Ekar, but Campagnolo hasn\u2019t confirmed this.\u00a0<\/p><p>There\u2019s in-built reach adjustment to suit a range of hand sizes and finger lengths.\u00a0<\/p><p>Campagnolo has updated the hood covers too for improved grip, with the golf-ball like texturing reminiscent of the final 11-speed generation of Super Record EPS.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><ul><li><strong>Claimed weight: <\/strong>230g (right-hand lever) and 170g (left-hand lever) without hose and brake caliper<\/li><\/ul><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-campagnolo-ekar-gt-cassette\">Campagnolo Ekar GT cassette\u00a0<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2400\" height=\"1600\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/02\/Campagnolo-Ekar-GT-new-gravel-bike-groupset-19-5.jpg\" alt=\"Campagnolo Ekar GT rear derailleur and cassette \" class=\"wp-image-817682\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Scott Windsor \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>There are four cassette options for Ekar GT, up from the three found on Ekar.<\/p><p>Like Ekar, there are 9-36t, 9-42t and 10-44t options, but there\u2019s also a new 10-48t cassette.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>The lowest 0.75 gear ratio is lower than the possibly 0.78 on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/news\/shimano-grx-rx820-gravel-groupset\">Shimano GRX RX-820<\/a> (with a 40t chainring and a 10-51t cassette), although it is possible to achieve an identical ratio when stepping down to a Shimano GRX RX-610 38t chainring.\u00a0<\/p><p>Although not an apples-for-apples comparison, the lowest possible gear ratio on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/components\/groupsets\/gravel-groupset\/sram-apex-eagle-review\">SRAM Apex Eagle<\/a> is 0.73 when combining a 38t chainring with a 10-52t cassette.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1747\" height=\"1164\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/02\/EkarGT_Cassette_Explode_V1.jpg\" alt=\"Campagnolo Ekar GT cassette\" class=\"wp-image-817709\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Campagnolo<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Unlike the Ekar cassettes (which are constructed from two pieces), the Ekar GT uses a more conventional, multi-piece construction to achieve the cheaper price point.\u00a0<\/p><p>The cassettes continue to run on Campagnolo\u2019s N3W (Next Three Ways) freehub body, introduced on its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/components\/wheels\/wheel-sets\/campagnolo-shamal-c21-db-2wf-xdr-carbon-wheelset-review\">Shamal wheels<\/a> before Ekar\u2019s release. The standard is backwards compatible with existing 10, 11 and 12-speed Campagnolo cassettes.\u00a0<\/p><p>The current Ekar cassettes feature six one-tooth jumps and there are never any jumps larger than three cogs, so you don\u2019t spin out on faster road-ride efforts or descents. Campagnolo has confirmed this is also true of the new 10-48t cassette.\u00a0<\/p><ul><li><strong>Claimed weights:<\/strong> 340g (9-36t), 380g (9-42t), 400g (10-44t), 435g (10-48t) <\/li><\/ul><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-campagnolo-ekar-gt-rear-derailleur\">Campagnolo Ekar GT rear derailleur\u00a0<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2400\" height=\"1600\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/02\/Campagnolo-Ekar-GT-new-gravel-bike-groupset-18-4.jpg\" alt=\"Campagnolo Ekar GT rear derailleur and cassette \" class=\"wp-image-817680\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Scott Windsor \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>There\u2019s one rear derailleur to cover all of the cassette options and Campagnolo says it has been refined to ensure easier setup and serviceability.\u00a0<\/p><p>It\u2019s constructed from a technopolymer mix of carbon and plastic, as well as aluminium. Campagnolo says it has improved the derailleur\u2019s durability by moving to a new, larger pulley designed to make cleaning easier and minimise dirt accumulation.\u00a0<\/p><p>There\u2019s a revised clutch system too, but details on this were not provided ahead of the launch.\u00a0<\/p><p>Campagnolo says the existing Ekar rear derailleur is not compatible with the 10-48t cassette, but hasn\u2019t confirmed whether the existing Ekar shifters are compatible with the new rear derailleur.\u00a0<\/p><ul><li><strong>Claimed weight: <\/strong>310g<\/li><\/ul><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-campagnolo-ekar-gt-crankset\">Campagnolo Ekar GT crankset\u00a0<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2400\" height=\"1600\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/02\/Campagnolo-Ekar-GT-new-gravel-bike-groupset-15-3.jpg\" alt=\"Campagnolo Ekar GT crankset \" class=\"wp-image-817677\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Scott Windsor \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The new Ekar GT crankset moves to an aluminium construction, over the carbon fibre Ekar crank.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>There\u2019s also a new 36t chainring option, in addition to the 38, 40, 42 and 44t sizes, all with a 104mm BCD (bolt circle diameter).\u00a0<\/p><p>Like Ekar, Ekar GT uses a four-arm design and you can replace the chainring without having to fully remove the crankset.\u00a0<\/p><p>It continues to use Campagnolo\u2019s tried-and-tested Ultra-Torque system, which sees the spindle split in two, with the two halves connected by a Hirth joint.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2400\" height=\"1600\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/02\/Campagnolo-Ekar-GT-new-gravel-bike-groupset-29-10.jpg\" alt=\"Campagnolo Ekar GT crankset \" class=\"wp-image-817687\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Scott Windsor \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Like Ekar, it runs on the brand\u2019s ProTech bottom bracket system.\u00a0<\/p><p>Ekar GT will be offered in 170, 172.5 and 175mm crank lengths, with no 165mm option (which is offered on Ekar) available at launch.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>The cranks use a wider Q-factor at 151mm, compared to the 145.5mm measurement of Ekar.\u00a0<\/p><ul><li><strong>Claimed weight: <\/strong>850g (38t, 172.5mm) <\/li><\/ul><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-campagnolo-ekar-gt-brake-calipers-rotors-and-chain\">Campagnolo Ekar GT brake calipers, rotors and chain\u00a0<\/h2><p>Campagnolo has confirmed Ekar GT uses the same brake calipers, disc brake rotors and chain as the existing Ekar.\u00a0<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-campagnolo-zonda-gt-wheels\">Campagnolo Zonda GT wheels\u00a0<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2400\" height=\"1600\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/02\/Campagnolo-Ekar-GT-new-gravel-bike-groupset-4-1.jpg\" alt=\"Campagnolo Ekar GT groupset and Zonda GT wheels on a Basso Palta \" class=\"wp-image-817675\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Scott Windsor \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Campagnolo is also launching new Zonda GT wheels to accompany the new groupset.\u00a0<\/p><p>These feature an aluminium rim with a 23mm internal width, akin to the recently launched <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/news\/campagnolo-bora-ultra-wto-wheelset-range\">Bora Ultra WTO and Bora WTO<\/a> wheel range.\u00a0<\/p><p>Campagnolo says the wheels excel both on and off-road and are claimed to weigh 1,690g.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"7952\" height=\"5304\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/02\/Zonda-fondo-nero-4.jpg\" alt=\"Campagnolo Zonda GT wheel \" class=\"wp-image-817710\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Campagnolo<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>When Campagnolo announced the aforementioned Bora wheels, it said the C23 rim was compatible with \u201cboth wide gravel tyres and thinner road tyres\u201d from 25 to 48mm.\u00a0<\/p><p>The Zonda GT has a 29mm rim depth and uses Campagnolo\u2019s G3 lacing, which sees the spokes arranged in a 2:1 ratio, with eight sets of three spokes.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"7952\" height=\"5304\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/02\/Zonda-fondo-nero-10.jpg\" alt=\"Campagnolo Zonda GT wheel \" class=\"wp-image-817711\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Campagnolo<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The rims adopt Campagnolo\u2019s 2-Way Fit design, meaning they can be used with clincher or tubeless tyres, and the hubs spin on cup-and-cone bearings.\u00a0<\/p><p>The new wheels will retail for \u00a3614.99 \/ $749.
