{"id":59849,"date":"2024-02-27T13:30:00","date_gmt":"2024-02-27T12:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/d6e28aba-a5fc-454a-9a17-b26f6f9592a5"},"modified":"2024-02-27T14:59:43","modified_gmt":"2024-02-27T13:59:43","slug":"4in-studded-tyres-a-3d-printed-saddle-and-a-1200-sleeping-bag-lael-wilcoxs-alaskan-ultra-setup","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/cyclingplus\/rss_feed\/4in-studded-tyres-a-3d-printed-saddle-and-a-1200-sleeping-bag-lael-wilcoxs-alaskan-ultra-setup\/","title":{"rendered":"4in studded tyres, a 3D-printed saddle and a $1,200 sleeping bag | Lael Wilcox&#8217;s Alaskan ultra setup"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\">The ultra-distance doyenne is racing a Corvus Akio fat bike at the Iditarod Trail Invitational <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Jack Evans\n      <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Tuesday, 27 February 2024 at 12:30 PM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>Lael Wilcox will ride 500km through Alaska in temperatures reaching -30\u00baC on a fat bike with studded, four-inch tyres.\u00a0<\/p><p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/fitness-and-training\/ultra-distance-cycling\">ultra-endurance<\/a> star is tackling the Iditarod Trail Invitational, a 350-mile self-supported race across frozen lakes, mountain ranges and windy tundra.\u00a0<\/p><p>Competitors set off from Knik Lake, near Anchorage, on Sunday 25 February and Wilcox hopes to reach the remote village of McGrath in three days. <\/p><p>They follow in the paw prints of the Iditarod dog &#8216;mushing&#8217; race, which Wilcox followed while growing up in Alaska. <\/p><p>There is not a set route, but competitors must pass through seven checkpoints, where food and basic accommodation are provided.<\/p><p>Nonetheless, Wilcox has strapped sleeping gear to her Corvus Akio fat bike, in case she needs to sleep out.\u00a0<\/p><p>Let\u2019s take a closer look at the bike and kit Wilcox is taking.\u00a0<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-lael-wilcox-s-corvus-akio-fat-bike\">Lael Wilcox\u2019s Corvus Akio fat bike\u00a0<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Rugile Kaladyte<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>One of the previous record times for the Iditarod Trail Invitational was set on the Corvus Akio, a carbon fibre fat bike.\u00a0<\/p><p>Corvus, an Anchorage-based brand, says its most balanced and capable bike is equally at home in the backcountry and on trails as in the snow.<\/p><p>Wilcox\u2019s Akio is built around a 12-speed, mechanical SRAM XO Eagle groupset with a 30t Truvativ Stylo carbon crank.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"8192\" height=\"5464\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/02\/Lael-Wilcox-2024-ITI-Bike-Radar-12.jpg\" alt=\"Lael Wilcox's Corvus Akio fat bike for the Iditarod Trail Invitational\" class=\"wp-image-818611\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Rugile Kaladyte<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>At the back, the Akio has a 10-52t SRAM XO Eagle cassette, which Wilcox may need to winch the heavily loaded bike up the Iditarod Trail\u2019s mountain passes.<\/p><p>If the snow is particularly deep, Wilcox tells BikeRadar she may end up having to walk at 3km\/h for hours at a time.\u00a0<\/p><p>To cool off speed down descents, Wilcox has specced SRAM CenterLine rotors (180mm front and 160mm back) and SRAM Level TLM brakes.\u00a0<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-four-inch-studded-tyres\">Four-inch, studded tyres<\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2048\" height=\"2560\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/02\/Lael-Wilcox-2024-ITI-Bike-Radar-02-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Lael Wilcox riding a Corvus Akio fat bike for the Iditarod Trail Invitational\" class=\"wp-image-818629\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Rugile Kaladyte<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The Akio rolls on 27.5in Corvus Big Su carbon wheels, which can be run with tyre pressures as low as 4-6psi, according to the brand.<\/p><p>The Alaska Edition 150SL hubs are claimed to provide fast engagement, even in cold weather.\u00a0<\/p><p>Wilcox has chosen to run the Terrene Yippee Ki Yay 27.5&#215;4.3in lightly studded tyres set up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/tubeless\">tubeless<\/a>. The shell is made mostly from Gore Infinium fabric and it costs $1,170.\u00a0<\/p><p>Along with an insulated sleeping mat and Mountain Laurel Designs FKT Event Bivy bag, this is packed into a stuff sack strapped onto the rear rack.<\/p><p>Unsurprisingly, Wilcox is aiming to make it between the checkpoints, where there are canvas bell tents, without sleeping. However, there is a 130km gap where she might have to.\u00a0<\/p><p>When sleeping in such low temperatures, Wilcox says: \u201cYou don\u2019t really recover. It&#8217;s just so cold and it&#8217;s hard to rest. This full-face mask has a magnetic attachment to hold her Smith ski goggles.<\/p><p>Included on her heavily wool-based clothing list are the $495 45Nrth W\u00f8lfgar Boa Boots.\u00a0<\/p><p>Compatible with two-bolt cleats, these <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-winter-cycling-shoes\">winter cycling shoes<\/a> are claimed to use NASA-grade insulation to keep your feet warm down to -32\u00baC.\u00a0<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-round-the-world-preparation\">Round the World preparation?<\/h3><p>Wilcox will attempt to break Jenny Graham\u2019s Guinness World Record for the fastest female circumnavigation of the world in May.<\/p><p>But she doesn\u2019t see the 350-mile Iditarod as specific preparation.<\/p><p>\u201cI wonder if they really have anything in common: riding the fat bike in the winter and then getting on a road bike in the summer riding a lot faster,\u201d she says.<\/p><p>Instead, she wants to complete the shorter version of the Iditarod to qualify for the 1,000-mile event next year.<\/p><p>Wilcox says she\u2019ll ride the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/specialized-roubaix-sl8-expert-review\"> Specialized Roubaix <\/a>for her Round-the-World record attempt.
