The 28mm and 30mm sizes are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/hookless-rims-road-tubeless\">hookless<\/a> compatible.\u00a0<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-10-per-cent-lower-rolling-resistance\">10 per cent lower rolling resistance<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Hutchinson says the Blackbird is faster, grippier and more durable than the Fusion 5 Performance. &#8211; Hutchinson<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The release of the Blackbird marks Hutchinson\u2019s return to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/tech\/fast-road-tyre-group-test\">fast road bike tyre<\/a> market.\u00a0<\/p><p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/components\/tyres\/road-bike-tyres\/hutchinson-fusion-5-performance-11storm-tyre-review\">Fusion 5 Performance<\/a> used to occupy the top spot in Hutchinson\u2019s road bike range, but hadn\u2019t been updated since we last reviewed it in 2021.<\/p><p>Hutchinson says the Blackbird uses a new, more supple casing called SwiftEasy.\u00a0<\/p><p>It claims this reduces rolling resistance by a tenth, while improving comfort and reducing weight.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/03\/20240208_HUTCHINSON_GATEAU_A7C3188-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Bunch of Hutchinson Blackbird tubeless road bike tyres\" class=\"wp-image-823521\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Using fewer casing layers is said to make the Blackbird more supple. &#8211; Sophie Gateau \/ Hutchinson<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>In the SwiftEasy design, Hutchinson wraps the tyre casing around the bead and directly adheres it to a polyamide puncture protection belt. <\/p><p>Usually, these layers overlap, so this reduces the number of layers required from three to two. <\/p><p>The second layer of 127 TPI casing stretches from bead to bead, to improve air retention, according to Hutchinson.\u00a0<\/p><p>The brand hasn\u2019t supplied any data to support its claims.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/03\/AM9A4910-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Hutchinson Blackbird tubeless road bike tyres\" class=\"wp-image-823527\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">We have a test sample, so stay tuned to BikeRadar for our review. &#8211; Scott Windsor \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>However, we have a set to test and will report back with our independent review.\u00a0<\/p><p>The 28mm Blackbird TLR weighs 286g per tyre on our scales, which is competitive with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-road-bike-tyres\">best road bike tyres<\/a> such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-road-bike-tyres\">Continental GP5000 S TR<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p><p>Hutchinson says the tubeless 26mm and 28mm-wide Blackbird weigh 275g and 310g respectively.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4,000km of riding\u00a0<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/03\/20240208_HUTCHINSON_GATEAU_A7C3285-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Hutchinson Blackbird tubeless tyre in factory puncture test\" class=\"wp-image-823522\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Hutchinson claims the Blackbird can last for 4,000km. &#8211; Sophie Gateau \/ Hutchinson<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The brand says the Blackbird is more durable than the Fusion 5, thanks to a new tread compound.\u00a0<\/p><p>The Mach Tread 3.0 is said to be 10 per cent tougher than the outgoing 11Storm compound.\u00a0<\/p><p>Due to its increased tear resistance, the Blackbird can last for 4,000km of riding, according to Hutchinson.<\/p><p>The new tread is claimed to be 15 per cent wider than the previous design and optimised for modern, wide rims.\u00a0<\/p><p>In combination with the more supple SwiftEasy casing, Hutchinson says this puts more tyre in contact with the road to improve cornering grip.\u00a0<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Long live the inner tube<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/03\/20240208_HUTCHINSON_GATEAU_A7C3157-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Clincher version of Hutchinson Blackbird tyres\" class=\"wp-image-823520\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The tube-type has added puncture protection for use with inner tubes, according to Hutchinson. &#8211; Sophie Gateau \/ Hutchinson<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>For road riders who are not tubeless converts or only have clincher <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/buyers-guide-to-road-bike-wheels\">road bike wheels<\/a>, there is a tube-type Hutchinson Blackbird.\u00a0<\/p><p>Hutchinson omits the lightweight SwiftEasy casing from the clincher version and includes an extra layer of casing. This adds the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/skills\/how-to-prevent-punctures\">puncture protection <\/a>required to run <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/bike-inner-tubes\">inner tubes<\/a>, according to the brand.<\/p><p>The clincher Blackbird comes with black or tan sidewalls and in 26mm, 28mm and 30mm sizes.
