Shimano&#8217;s 8-speed component families <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Stan Portus\n      <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Tuesday, 02 April 2024 at 16:00 PM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>Shimano Essa is a new 1x drivetrain, 8-speed groupset for affordable mountain bikes and urban bikes.\u00a0<\/p><p>The new range complements Shimano\u2019s 8-speed flat-bar Acera, Altus and Tourney TX component families.\u00a0<\/p><p>In a move similar to Cues, which replaced several 9 to 11-speed component lines in favour of a unified system, Shimano says Essa \u201charmonises an often complex set of component groups\u201d.<\/p><p>However, unlike Cues, Shimano says Essa\u2019s 1x drivetrain and 8-speed components will be backwards-compatible with Acera, Altus and Tourney TX, aiding the brand\u2019s ambition to \u201csimplify its product line-up for the next generation of cyclists\u201d.<\/p><p>Shimano has also revealed new additions to Cues and it&#8217;s non-series hubs.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-essence-of-active\">Essence of Active<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Essa is designed for budget mountain bikes, fitness bikes and hybrid bikes. &#8211; Shimano<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Shimano says Essa uses the \u201cEssence of Active concept\u201d, which will help elevate the brand\u2019s 8-speed componentry.<\/p><p>Essa suits a range of casual sport bikes, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-mountain-bikes-under-1000-2\">budget mountain bikes<\/a>, fitness bikes and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-hybrid-bikes\">hybrid bikes<\/a>, according to Shimano.<\/p><p>Shimano says Essa-branded products will only include the rear derailleur and crankset.<\/p><p>The derailleur includes a simplified clutch-like system to aid chain retention.<\/p><p>Shimano says the Essa range integrates with 8-speed Hyperglide systems, including existing cassettes and shifters.<\/p><p>The Essa groupset uses a non-series 11-45-tooth cassette.\u00a0<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-shimano-essa-components\">Shimano Essa components<\/h2><p>The Shimano Essa range comprises two new Essa products and Shimano\u2019s existing CS0-HG400-8 cassette.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-shimano-essa-rd-u2000-rear-derailleur\">Shimano Essa RD-U2000 rear derailleur<\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1067\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/04\/531000-RD-U2000-shic6-primary_1-a6cc08-original-1710953173.jpg\" alt=\"Shimano Essa rear derailleur on white background.\" class=\"wp-image-824616\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The rear derailleur tucks under the chainstay to keep out of harm&#8217;s way. &#8211; Shimano<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The Shimano RD-U2000 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/a-complete-guide-to-rear-derailleurs\">rear derailleur<\/a> offers \u201cstable performance on trails\u201d.<\/p><p>Shimano says it has optimised the derailleur\u2019s geometry and spring tension to reduce chain drop.<\/p><p>The derailleur uses Shimano\u2019s Shadow RD design, which tucks the derailleur out of harm&#8217;s way beneath the chainstay.\u00a0<\/p><p>The new Essa derailleur has a total capacity of 34 teeth \u2013 or, in other words, the maximum difference between the smallest and largest cog \u2013 and a maximum low sprocket of 45 teeth.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-shimano-essa-fc-ud2000-1-crankset\">Shimano Essa FC-UD2000-1 crankset<\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1066\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/04\/530995-FC-U2000-1-40T-shic219-primary_1-6ea6c0-original-1710953147.jpg\" alt=\"Shimano Essa crankset on white background.\" class=\"wp-image-824613\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The crankset is available with 32 or 40 teeth. &#8211; Shimano<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The Shimano Essa FC-U2000-1 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/cranksets\">crankset<\/a> has two chain ring options: 32 teeth or 40 teeth.\u00a0<\/p><p>Its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/narrow-wide-chainring\">narrow-wide tooth profile<\/a> improves chain retention, according to Shimano.<\/p><p>The 32-tooth chainring comes with Dynamic Chain Engagement tooth profiling, used on Shimano\u2019s XC, trail and enduro riding products.\u00a0<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-shimano-cs-hg400-8-cassette\">Shimano CS-HG400-8 cassette\u00a0<\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1067\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/04\/530994-CS-HG400-8-11-45T-shic260-primary_2-cf322b-original-1710953146.jpg\" alt=\"Shimano 8-speed cassette for Shimano Essa groupset.\" class=\"wp-image-824629\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The cassette uses Shimano&#8217;s HyperGlide technology. &#8211; Shimano<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The Shimano CS-HG400-8 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/workshop\/bike-cassettes\">cassette<\/a> predates Essa, but this new version increases its range from 11-40t to 11-45t.\u00a0<\/p><p>The wide-ranging cassette has the following sprockets: 11, 13, 15, 18, 22, 27, 35 and 45.<\/p><p>The 8-speed cassette uses Shimano&#8217;s HyperGlide technology.\u00a0<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-shorter-reach-for-shimano-cues\">Shorter reach for Shimano Cues\u00a0<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1067\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/04\/531675-SHORT-Reach_Shifter_Feature3-fa8494-original-1711535327.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-824621\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The upper lever is 10mm closer to the rider. &#8211; Shimano<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Alongside the announcement of Essa, Shimano has revealed an update to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/news\/shimano-cues\">Cues<\/a>, which replaced the brand\u2019s 9\/10\/11-speed lower-tier components.<\/p><p>Cues has a new range of shifters and brake levers designed for riders with smaller hands.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1067\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/04\/531672-SHORT-Reach_Brake_Lever_Feature-1-d0cab1-original-1711535327.jpg\" alt=\"Diagram showing reach on Shimano Cues brake levers with text that reads 'S-Reach' and '20% closer to handlebar'.\" class=\"wp-image-824619\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The reach of the brake lever has also been reduced. &#8211; Shimano<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Cues was already designed to provide drivetrain solutions across cycling categories, including touring and mountain biking, but Shimano says the update helps provide specific solutions \u201cfor every type of bicycle\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>The two Shimano Cues shifter levers are said to be 12mm (lower lever) and 10mm (upper lever) closer to the rider than before, reducing thumb travel.<\/p><p>The Shimano Cues brake lever is 20 per cent closer to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-mountain-bike-handlebars\">handlebar<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-hub-refresh\">Hub refresh\u00a0<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1067\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/04\/531005-HB-NN300-shic6-primary_1-fb4d11-original-1710953312.jpg\" alt=\"Shimano front hub on white background.\" class=\"wp-image-824618\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Shimano has simplified its non-series hub line-up, too. &#8211; Shimano<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Shimano has \u201ccompletely renewed\u201d its non-series front and rear hubs across its range.<\/p><p>Shimano says its non-series hubs \u201cwill be concentrated around a simple and easily understood line-up\u201d.<\/p><p>The TC600 and TC\/QC500 hub series will include labyrinth and contact seal bearings to endure the high torque levels of aggressive trail riding.\u00a0<\/p><p>The QCC400 series will have contact seal bearings only.
