{"id":62203,"date":"2024-04-10T15:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-04-10T13:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/6b432c2c-0250-4603-9e96-06591e18c526"},"modified":"2024-04-10T15:59:43","modified_gmt":"2024-04-10T13:59:43","slug":"bike-of-the-week-decathlons-4000-riverside-gcr-takes-on-premium-gravel-bikes","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/cyclingplus\/rss_feed\/bike-of-the-week-decathlons-4000-riverside-gcr-takes-on-premium-gravel-bikes\/","title":{"rendered":"Bike of the Week | Decathlon\u2019s \u00a34,000 Riverside GCR takes on premium gravel bikes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\">Can the carbon-framed GCR deliver comparable performance to more expensive gravel rivals?\u00a0 <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Oscar Huckle\n      <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Wednesday, 10 April 2024 at 13:00 PM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>The Decathlon Riverside GCR gravel bike looks set to continue the French brand\u2019s reputation for impressive value.\u00a0<\/p><p>The new gravel bike has a carbon frame built with SRAM Force XPLR eTap AXS and retails for \u00a34,000 \/ $5,700 \/ \u20ac4,000.<\/p><p>Many of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-gravel-bikes\">best gravel bikes<\/a> with carbon frames and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/gravel-bike-groupsets\">gravel groupset<\/a> such as this cost a lot more, so the GCR could well be a challenger for premium brands.\u00a0<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-race-oriented-gravel-speedster\">A race-oriented gravel speedster\u00a0<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Riverside represents quite a different proposition from what we&#8217;ve typically come to expect of Decathlon. &#8211; Warren Rossiter \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Riverside is a subsidiary group of Decathlon, similar to Van Rysel, that specialises in gravel bikes.\u00a0<\/p><p>Its GCR model uses high-modulus carbon fibres in certain areas for maximum power transfer.<\/p><p>These fibres are most likely used in the bottom bracket junction and head tube.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1800\" height=\"1200\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/03\/Riverside_CGR_woz_14.jpeg\" alt=\"Down tube on Riverside GCR \" class=\"wp-image-826200\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The down tube is chunky. &#8211; Warren Rossiter \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The seatstays are dropped and the GCR uses a round 27.2mm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/seatposts\">seatpost<\/a> standard rather than anything proprietary.\u00a0<\/p><p>Decathlon says it has designed the frame around a shorter reach and stem length, with a flared handlebar for optimal control on rougher surfaces.\u00a0<\/p><p>The brand also opted for long chainstays to improve stability and a raised bottom bracket for \u201cmaximum versatility\u201d.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1800\" height=\"1200\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/03\/Riverside_CGR_woz_6.jpeg\" alt=\"UCI sticker on Riverside GCR \" class=\"wp-image-826192\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The frame is even UCI-compliant. &#8211; Warren Rossiter \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The GCR pleasingly eschews <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/tech\/the-truth-about-internal-cable-routing\">integrated cable routing<\/a>, with the cables fed conventionally through the down tube. This should make maintenance easier.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>The GCR is only compatible with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/electronic-groupsets\">electronic groupsets<\/a>, which might be a drawback for some.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1800\" height=\"1200\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/03\/Riverside_CGR_woz_20.jpeg\" alt=\"Removable front derailleur mount on Riverside GCR \" class=\"wp-image-826206\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">There&#8217;s a removable front derailleur mount. &#8211; Warren Rossiter \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Decathlon claims the frame weighs 1,058g (size medium) and the fork 442g. According to the brand,\u00a0the carbon fork plays a large role in the bike\u2019s handling, helping to make it more playful and \u201censure extremely precise steering\u201d.\u00a0<\/p><p>The 42mm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-gravel-tyres\">gravel bike tyre<\/a> clearance is rather narrow compared to the competition, although it\u2019s in line with the most recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/bikes\/gravel-bikes\/canyon-grail-cfr-di2-review\">Canyon Grail<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1800\" height=\"1200\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/03\/Riverside_CGR_woz_11.jpeg\" alt=\"Tyre clearance of Riverside GCR \" class=\"wp-image-826197\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">There&#8217;s still some clearance around this 40mm tyre. &#8211; Warren Rossiter \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The GCR is available in four sizes, from S to XL. This is a reasonable gear range, which should help you on climbs and descents.\u00a0<\/p><p>Claimed to weigh 1,685g, the Reynolds 4.1XL 700 gravel bike wheels use the brand\u2019s ATR carbon fibre rims but have heavier steel spokes and a more cost-effective set of hubs. The ATR rims have a 23mm internal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/rim-width-explained-for-road-bikes-mountain-bikes-and-gravel-bikes\">rim width<\/a>.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1800\" height=\"1200\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/03\/Riverside_CGR_woz_17.jpeg\" alt=\"Hutchinson Touareg tyre fitted on Reynolds rim \" class=\"wp-image-826203\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Reynolds carbon wheel and Hutchinson tyre combination is a strong spec choice. &#8211; Warren Rossiter \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Decathlon says it opted to spec 40mm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/news\/huthchinson-50mm-tyres\">Hutchinson Touareg<\/a> tyres for their \u201cversatility and flexibility\u201d. The bike comes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/workshop\/how-to-set-up-a-tubeless-tyre\">set up tubeless<\/a> out of the box and you just need to add your preferred <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/which-tubeless-sealant-works-the-best\">sealant<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p><p>The bike has a Decathlon Aluminium ERGO handlebar with a moderate 16-degree flare and a matching stem. The bar has quite a deep drop, unlike many other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/gravel-bike-handlebars\">gravel bike handlebars<\/a>, which are more compact.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1800\" height=\"1200\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/03\/Riverside_CGR_woz_7.jpeg\" alt=\"Fizik Argo saddle \" class=\"wp-image-826193\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Fizik Argo saddle is a nice touch. &#8211; Warren Rossiter \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Rounding off the build is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/components\/saddles\/fizik-terra-argo-x5-saddle-review\">Fizik Argo Terra X5 saddle<\/a> mounted to the own-brand aluminium seatpost.\u00a0<\/p><p>Our size-large bike weighs 8.48kg and it\u2019s a promising build for a decent price. But can the Riverside GCR compete with pricier gravel bikes?
