{"id":62247,"date":"2024-04-18T15:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-04-18T13:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/09dc7177-d9f1-47a1-a0f7-951292055df7"},"modified":"2024-04-18T15:59:41","modified_gmt":"2024-04-18T13:59:41","slug":"poc-introduces-the-procen-air-a-time-trial-helmet-for-road-racing","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/cyclingplus\/rss_feed\/poc-introduces-the-procen-air-a-time-trial-helmet-for-road-racing\/","title":{"rendered":"POC introduces the Procen Air \u2013 a time trial helmet for road racing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\">Is this the next big thing in road helmets? <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Simon von Bromley\n      <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Thursday, 18 April 2024 at 13:00 PM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>POC has announced the Procen Air, a new aero road helmet heavily inspired by time trial helmets.<\/p><p>Developed over several years, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/news\/new-poc-aero-road-helmet-2024-tour-down-under\">debuted at this year\u2019s Tour Down Under<\/a>, POC claims the Procen Air offers a significant performance advantage over its previous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-aero-helmets\">aero road helmet<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/helmets\/road-cycling-helmets\/poc-ventral-spin-aero-helmet-review\">Ventral<\/a>.<\/p><p>The Procen Air\u2019s design shares many similarities with the brand&#8217;s recently launched time trial helmet, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/news\/poc-procen-time-trial-helmet\">Procen TT<\/a>.<\/p><p>As with that helmet, POC claims the Procen Air harnesses the Venturi effect to improve both ventilation and aerodynamic efficiency.<\/p><p>Notably, the Procen Air also partially covers your ears, though POC says it has gone to great lengths to ensure hearing and peripheral vision are not affected.<\/p><p>Available now, the POC Procen Air costs \u00a3360 \/ $400 \/ \u20ac400.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-time-trial-inspired\">Time-trial inspired<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">POC&#8217;s latest aero road helmet was heavily inspired by its time trial helmet, the Procen TT.<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>According to POC, the Procen Air was designed with the goal of offering \u201call the watt savings of a TT helmet\u201d without compromising safety or a rider\u2019s ability to hear and see.<\/p><p>In fact, POC goes as far as to claim the helmet can improve a rider\u2019s vision and hearing.<\/p><p>This is due to the Procen Air\u2019s integrated visor, which is said to provide a wide, unobstructed field of view, and the partial ear coverings, which are claimed to reduce turbulence around the rider\u2019s ears.<\/p><p>POC says the latter \u201cwill result in most riders hearing more clearly\u201d.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2400\" height=\"1600\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/04\/POC_ProcenAir_CFD_01.jpg\" alt=\"POC Procen Air CFD\" class=\"wp-image-828065\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">POC says CFD modelling showed the three prominent vents at the front of the helmet improve both cooling and aerodynamic performance. &#8211; POC<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>In terms of aerodynamic performance, the Procen Air functions in a similar way to the Procen TT.<\/p><p>As with that helmet, the Procen Air was designed using CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) modelling, alongside wind-tunnel and real-world aero testing.<\/p><p>As on the Procen TT, the three ventilation holes at the front of the Procen Air are said to \u201cdrain the high-pressure zone\u201d, reducing the build-up of \u201cstagnant air and additional air resistance that a rider needs to push through\u201d.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2400\" height=\"1600\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/04\/POC-Procen-Air_Uranium-Black-Matte.jpg\" alt=\"POC Procen Air \u2013 Uranium Black Matte\" class=\"wp-image-828104\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Air is channelled in through the ventilation holes up front, and exits through a series of exhaust ports at the rear. &#8211; POC<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>This airflow is then channelled through the helmet, helping to cool the rider, before exiting through a series of large exhaust channels at the rear of the helmet.<\/p><p>According to data gathered by POC and its sponsored professional team, EF Pro Cycling (which has teams in both the men\u2019s and women\u2019s peloton), the Procen Air showed gains ranging from 5 to 18 watts compared to the Ventral, measured at speeds from 30 to 60kph.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2400\" height=\"1600\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/04\/POC_ProcenAir_2024_11.jpg\" alt=\"POC Procen Air\" class=\"wp-image-828062\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">POC says the Procen Air offers significant performance gains compared to its more traditional aero road helmet, the Ventral. &#8211; POC<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>POC hasn\u2019t provided any data comparing it to popular aero road helmets from other manufacturers.<\/p><p>Offering a real-world example, though, Peter Schep, a performance director at EF Pro Cycling, claims the Procen Air saved Alberto Bettiol \u201cwell over 10 seconds\u201d during his successful, 30km-long solo breakaway at Milano\u2013Torino in early March.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-poc-procen-air-availability-specification-and-pricing\">POC Procen Air availability, specification and pricing<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2400\" height=\"1600\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/04\/POC-Procen-Air_Hydrogen-White.jpg\" alt=\"POC Procen Air \u2013 Hydrogen White\" class=\"wp-image-828097\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">POC&#8217;s Procen Air is available in white or black, with mirrored and clear visors included &#8211; POC<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The POC Procen Air is available now in two colours \u2013 \u2018Hydrogen White\u2019 or \u2018Uranium Black Matte\u2019. Both mirrored and clear visors are included.<\/p><p>It costs \u00a3360 \/ $400 \/ \u20ac400 and comes in three sizes; small (50-56cm), medium (54-59cm) and large (56-61cm).<\/p><p>Sadly, the bright pink helmets worn by POC\u2019s sponsored professional teams, EF Education-EasyPost and EF Education-Cannondale, aren\u2019t available.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1728\" height=\"1153\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/04\/POC_ProcenAir_2024_10-edited.jpg\" alt=\"POC Procen Air\" class=\"wp-image-828100\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">POC\u2019s sponsored professional teams get these special-edition pink helmets.<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>In terms of weight, POC claims a size-medium Procen Air weighs 350g. Perhaps unsurprisingly, that\u2019s a fair bit more than most traditional aero helmets.<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/helmets\/road-cycling-helmets\/specialized-s-works-evade-3-helmet-review\">Specialized\u2019s S-Works Evade 3<\/a> weighs 272g, for example, while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/helmets\/road-cycling-helmets\/trek-ballista-mips-helmet-review\">Trek\u2019s Ballista MIPS<\/a> weighs 268g (both in a size-medium).<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Analysis \u2013 was this always the logical next step?<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2400\" height=\"1600\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/04\/POC_ProcenAir_2024_3.jpg\" alt=\"POC Procen Air\" class=\"wp-image-828056\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Was a time-trial style helmet for road racing inevitable? &#8211; POC<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Given the onslaught of aerodynamic optimisations in professional cycling in recent years, it\u2019s something of a wonder a helmet like the Procen Air hasn\u2019t come sooner.<\/p><p>After all, despite the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/tech\/2023-uci-rule-changes\">UCI\u2019s technical regulations<\/a> being infamously prescriptive about some things, the rules surrounding helmets are surprisingly lax.<\/p><p>Beyond performance concerns around ventilation, comfort and weight, there are \u2013 as far as we can tell \u2013 no rules preventing a rider from taking to the start line of a mass-start road race in a full-on TT helmet.<\/p><p>Indeed, we often see riders in mass-start events on the track wearing short-tail time trial helmets, such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/helmets\/road-cycling-helmets\/kask-bambino-aero-helmet-in-brief-review\">Kask Bambino<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/news\/new-poc-cerebel-released-ahead-of-giro\">POC Cerebel<\/a>, for example.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1350\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/04\/Kask-Bambino-time-trial-helmet.jpg\" alt=\"Kask Bambino time trial helmet\" class=\"wp-image-828128\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Kask&#8217;s short-tail Bambino helmet is often used in mass-start races on the track. &#8211; Joe Branston \/ Immediate Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Despite the protestations of some traditionalists, other bits of time trial tech \u2013 such as skinsuits, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/sizing-and-fit\/narrow-handlebars\">narrow handlebars<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/tech\/why-are-pros-using-such-big-chainrings\">big chainrings<\/a> \u2013 have been rapidly adopted by road cyclists in recent years.<\/p><p>As mentioned above, even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/pro-bike\/alberto-bettiol-rapha-x-palace-cannondale-systemsix\">Alberto Bettiol<\/a> \u2013 a rider so old-school he\u2019s yet to fully commit to using a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-power-meters\">power meter<\/a> in every race \u2013 has been wearing the Procen Air in select races this season.<\/p><p>In that context, a helmet that takes aerodynamic inspiration from a TT helmet makes perfect sense.<\/p><p>There may well be compromises to a helmet such as the Procen Air, whether in terms of ventilation, weight or comfort, but if the claimed performance gains stand up to scrutiny we wouldn\u2019t be surprised to see other brands follow suit.<\/p><p>Indeed, Kask appears to be in the latter stages of development for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/news\/2025-kask-utopia\">a similar helmet, which partially covers a rider\u2019s ears<\/a>.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"3000\" height=\"2000\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2020\/09\/20200923_SB_5DSR_MG_3218-0bf3dd7.jpg\" alt=\"POC Tempor time trial helmet\" class=\"wp-image-558329\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">POC&#8217;s Tempor time trial helmet is more than a decade old, but its influence is still felt today. &#8211; Simon Bromley \/ Immediate Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Perhaps, though, it\u2019s no surprise it should be POC that makes the first leap in this area.<\/p><p>Its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/helmets\/road-cycling-helmets\/poc-tempor-aero-helmet-in-brief-review\">Tempor time trial helmet<\/a> was more than a decade ahead of its time when it launched back in 2012, after all.<\/p><p>Of course, the question remains whether helmets such as this can be a commercial success outside the realms of elite sport. Thanks to its unorthodox looks, the Tempor struggled to catch on beyond a few smart riders who did their own aero testing, after all.<\/p><p>With everyday riders increasingly versed in the impact of aerodynamics on performance, though, the landscape certainly seems primed for a product such as this.<\/p><p>Could the Procen Air mark a new era for aero road helmets, then?
