{"id":62253,"date":"2024-04-18T16:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-04-18T14:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/73580033-83d2-46c8-afaf-ac451e73f945"},"modified":"2024-04-18T17:00:58","modified_gmt":"2024-04-18T15:00:58","slug":"zipps-new-super-9-disc-wheel-is-optimised-for-wider-tyres-and-lower-pressures","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/cyclingplus\/rss_feed\/zipps-new-super-9-disc-wheel-is-optimised-for-wider-tyres-and-lower-pressures\/","title":{"rendered":"Zipp\u2019s new Super-9 disc wheel is optimised for wider tyres and lower pressures"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\">28mm tyres are the new standard for time trials <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Simon von Bromley\n      <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Thursday, 18 April 2024 at 14:00 PM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>Zipp has launched its latest full-carbon disc wheel, the Super-9 Tubeless Disc-Brake Disc.<\/p><p>With a progressively wide <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/hookless-rims-road-tubeless\">hookless rim<\/a>, Zipp says the new Super-9 disc wheel is fastest when paired with 28mm-wide <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-road-bike-tyres\">tubeless road bike tyres<\/a> and lower tyre pressures.<\/p><p>It includes an integrated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/maintenance\/tools-kits-and-boxes\/pressure-gauge\/quarq-tyrewiz-tyre-pressure-monitor-review\">Quarq TyreWiz<\/a>, enabling riders to monitor their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/workshop\/road-bike-tyre-pressure\">tyre pressures<\/a> in real time from a connected <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-bike-computers\">bike computer<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p><p>At a claimed weight of only 1,050g, Zipp says the Super-9 Tubeless Disc-Brake Disc is among the lightest disc wheels available.<\/p><p>Zipp says Chlo\u00e9 Dygert, of the Canyon\/\/SRAM Racing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/pro-bike\/womens-worldtour-bikes\">Women\u2019s WorldTour team<\/a>, used the new Super-9 Tubeless Disc-Brake Disc to win the women\u2019s individual time trial at the 2023 UCI World Championships.<\/p><p>Built around Zipp\u2019s flagship ZR1 hub (with ceramic bearings), the Zipp Super-9 Tubeless Disc-Brake Disc is available now and costs \u00a32,450 \/ $3,000 \/ \u20ac2,750.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-wider-is-faster-even-with-disc-wheels\">Wider is faster, even with disc wheels<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Zipp&#8217;s focus with its latest disc wheel was overall system efficiency, not just aerodynamics. &#8211; Zipp<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>In line with its other road wheelsets, the new Super-9 Tubeless Disc-Brake Disc has been updated in accordance with Zipp\u2019s Total System Efficiency (TSE) philosophy.<\/p><p>This sees the move to a wide, hookless rim designed for larger tyres and lower tyre pressures.<\/p><p>Zipp says this combination offers lower <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/tech\/fast-road-tyre-group-test\">rolling resistance<\/a>, as well as improved handling and cornering grip.<\/p><p>As such, the internal rim width has grown substantially \u2013 from 18mm on the outgoing Super-9 Tubeless disc wheel, to 23mm-wide on the new one.<\/p><p>This is the same internal rim width as on its 454 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/components\/wheels\/wheel-sets\/zipp-858-nsw\">858 NSW<\/a>, and 404 and 808 Firecrest rims, although its 353 NSW and 303 Firecrest rims are wider with 25mm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/rim-width-explained-for-road-bikes-mountain-bikes-and-gravel-bikes\">internal widths<\/a>.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2400\" height=\"1600\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/04\/Zipp-Super-9-Tubeless-Disc-Brake-Disc-wheel_006.jpg\" alt=\"Zipp Super-9 Tubeless Disc-Brake Disc wheel\" class=\"wp-image-827923\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Super-9 Tubeless Disc-Brake Disc wheel uses a wide hookless rim. &#8211; Zipp<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Because the rim is hookless, it can only be used with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/tubeless\">tubeless tyres<\/a> (though you can use an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/bike-inner-tubes\">inner tube<\/a> with a tubeless tyre if you prefer).<\/p><p>Zipp says a 700x28c tyre is both the minimum and optimal size tyre for the Super-9 Tubeless Disc-Brake Disc wheel.<\/p><p>Aerodynamically, Zipp says the new Super-9 disc wheel performs similarly to the previous version. It counts this as a win, though, since wider rims and tyres have a larger frontal area than narrow ones, which typically increases drag.<\/p><p>Consequently, the wheel is \u2013 according to Zipp \u2013 faster thanks to \u201cwatt-savings from reduced rolling resistance\u201d.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2400\" height=\"1600\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/04\/Zipp-Super-9-Tubeless-Disc-Brake-Disc-wheel_008.jpg\" alt=\"Zipp Super-9 Tubeless Disc-Brake Disc wheel\" class=\"wp-image-827925\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Zipp Super-9 Tubeless Disc-Brake Disc wheel was wind-tunnel tested in bikes from multiple brands. &#8211; Zipp<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Zipp hasn\u2019t put a specific figure on exactly how many watts riders can expect to save, but it did note the wheel was wind-tunnel tested in \u201cthe leading four triathlon bikes\u201d, to ensure it worked well across different models.<\/p><p>It also says it tested the wheel on a rolling road with three tyre models, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/components\/tyres\/road-bike-tyres\/vittoria-corsa-pro-tlr-tyre-review\">Vittoria Corsa Pro TLR<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/first-look-friday\/trek-ballista-continental-gp5000-tt-tr\">Continental GP5000 TT TR<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/news\/schwalbe-pro-one-tubeless-tyre-released\">Schwalbe Pro One TT<\/a>, to ensure consistent results.<\/p><p>Zipp says the new Super-9 disc wheel is 125g lighter than the outgoing model, bringing its weight down to 1,050g.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2400\" height=\"1600\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/04\/Zipp-Super-9-Tubeless-Disc-Brake-Disc-wheel_002.jpg\" alt=\"Zipp Super-9 Tubeless Disc-Brake Disc wheel\" class=\"wp-image-827919\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Zipp&#8217;s new Super-9 Tubeless Disc-Brake Disc wheel features an integrated Quarq TyreWiz sensor. &#8211; Zipp<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Zipp has integrated a Quarq TyreWiz sensor into the Super-9 Tubeless Disc-Brake Disc.<\/p><p>Zipp says this will enable riders to monitor their tyre pressures in real time, either while riding or when reaching their bike during the transition of a triathlon.<\/p><p>The valve hole has also been enlarged, giving a little more room for a track pump head to fit in (though it notes a pump adaptor will still be required, and is included with the wheel). The wheel also includes a dedicated valve hole cover to negate the need to tape over the hole.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2400\" height=\"1600\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/04\/Zipp-Super-9-Tubeless-Disc-Brake-Disc-wheel_003.jpg\" alt=\"Super-9 Tubeless Disc-Brake Disc wheel\" class=\"wp-image-827920\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A new valve hole cover negates the need to tape over the rim. &#8211; Zipp<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>As before, the Super-9 Tubeless Disc-Brake Disc uses a textured surface, which Zipp says helps to control airflow shedding off the wheel.<\/p><p>It costs \u00a32,450 \/ $3,000 \/ \u20ac2,750 and is available as a rear wheel only, with either a Shimano HG or SRAM XDR <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/freehubs\">freehub<\/a>.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-super-9-clincher-track-disc\">Super-9 Clincher Track Disc<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2400\" height=\"1600\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/04\/Zipp-Super-9-Clincher-Track-Disc-wheel.jpg\" alt=\"Zipp Super-9 Clincher Track Disc wheel\" class=\"wp-image-827917\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Zipp is on board with the trend for clinchers in track cycling. &#8211;
