The new Van Rysel shop makes up a corner of Decathlon\u2019s sprawling south London store, but it&#8217;s intended to offer more of a boutique experience than the rest of the warehouse-like premises.\u00a0<\/p><p>Van Rysel\u2019s shop is a sleek space. There are bikes arranged on a central mirrored display, a large screen showing images of its WorldTour team Decathlon-AG2R La Mondiale, and a welcome counter that references the sandstone shower blocks of the Paris\u2013Roubaix velodrome \u2013 close to Van Rysel\u2019s home in Lille, France.\u00a0<\/p><p>The setup is intended to show Van Rysel\u2019s ambition and the legitimacy of its bike range, from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/pro-bike\/worldtour-bikes\">men\u2019s WorldTour<\/a> race-winning RCR Pro to its more budget-friendly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-electric-bikes\">electric bikes<\/a>.<\/p><p>Having headed to the new showroom for its opening, we take a look at four key bikes from the brand\u2019s 2024 range.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-van-rysel-rcr\">Van Rysel RCR<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Van Rysel RCR uses the same frame shape as its costlier sibling. &#8211; Stan Portus \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The Van Rysel RCR Pro was officially launched last year \u2013 and caused quite a stir.\u00a0<\/p><p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-road-bikes\">road bike<\/a>, now used by the Decathlon-AG2R La Mondiale team, was framed as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/bikes\/road-bikes\/cannondale-supersix-evo-hi-mod-2-review\">budget superbike<\/a>. While its price of \u00a39,000 is, clearly, expensive, that\u2019s a few thousand pounds less than similar all-round race bikes, such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/bikes\/road-bikes\/specialized-s-works-tarmac-sl8-dura-ace-di2-review-2\">Specialized S-Works Tarmac SL8<\/a>.<\/p><p>The RCR is the less expensive version of the Pro, but it shares the same frame shape as its more expensive sibling.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1999\" height=\"1333\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/04\/IMG_4650.jpg\" alt=\"Van Rysel RCR road bike top tube.\" class=\"wp-image-851100\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Van Rysel designed the bike in collaboration with ONERA. &#8211; Stan Portus \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Van Rysel developed the frame shape in collaboration with the French Office National d&#8217;\u00c9tudes et de Recherches A\u00e9rospatiales (ONERA), the French aerospace lab, based near Van Rysel\u2019s headquarters.<\/p><p>At the shop opening, Yann Le Fraillec, Van Rysel\u2019s chief product officer, explained there were 20 to 25 iterations of the RCR\u2019s frame design.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1333\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/04\/IMG_4649.jpg\" alt=\"Van Rysel RCR road bike seat stays.\" class=\"wp-image-851099\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Van Rysel designed every tube shape to be as efficient as possible. &#8211; Stan Portus \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Van Rysel says cross-sections of every tube were calculated to be as efficient as possible in typical wind angles of up to 15 degrees. Van Rysel also tested the bike across three of ONERA\u2019s wind tunnels for data accuracy.\u00a0<\/p><p>The RCR differs from the RCR Pro in terms of carbon fibre layup. The RCR Pro uses carbon fibres to make the bike stiffer than the regular RCR in high-stress areas, such as the head tube.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1333\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/04\/IMG_4648.jpg\" alt=\"Van Rysel RCR road bike SRAM Rival drivetrain.\" class=\"wp-image-851098\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">This build comes with a SRAM Rival drivetrain. &#8211; Stan Portus \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The RCR frameset is also 40g heavier than the Pro at 830g (size medium, painted).\u00a0<\/p><p>The complete RCR we saw at the Van Rysel shop is built with a SRAM Rival groupset, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/components\/wheels\/wheel-sets\/zipp-303s-review\">Zipp 303s wheels<\/a>, a Fizik saddle and a two-piece cockpit. It is said to weigh 8.1kg.<\/p><p>This RCR is half the cost of the RCR Pro, at \u00a34,500.\u00a0<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-van-rysel-xcr\">Van Rysel XCR<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1333\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/04\/IMG_4663.jpg\" alt=\"Van Rysel XCR time trial bike.\" class=\"wp-image-851108\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Van Rysel XCR time trial bike features oversized, truncated tubes. &#8211; Stan Portus \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The XCR is Van Rysel\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/time-trial-bikes\">time trial bike<\/a>. It features oversized, truncated aerofoil tubes, a bladed front fork and a cockpit that integrates with the top tube.<\/p><p>While the RCR Pro was developed with ONERA, the XCR was designed with Swiss Side, the aerodynamics experts.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1333\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/04\/IMG_4664.jpg\" alt=\"Van Rysel XCR time trial bike front wheel and fork.\" class=\"wp-image-851109\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The TT bikes comes with Swiss Side wheels. &#8211; Stan Portus \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Swiss Side\u2019s experience with Formula 1 cars is said to have filtered into the bike\u2019s design.\u00a0<\/p><p>The involvement of Swiss Side is also why the XCR seen here is complete with the brand\u2019s Hadron 800 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/buyers-guide-to-road-bike-wheels\">road wheels<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1333\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/04\/IMG_4666.jpg\" alt=\"Van Rysel XCR time trial bike top tube.\" class=\"wp-image-851110\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Details about the XCR are still scant. &#8211; Stan Portus \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Decathlon-AG2R La Mondiale uses this bike in the WorldTour already, but the finer details \u2013 including aerodynamics data \u2013 are still scant.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-van-rysel-ncr-cf\">Van Rysel NCR CF<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1333\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/04\/IMG_4654.jpg\" alt=\"Van Rysel NCR road bike.\" class=\"wp-image-851104\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Van Rysel NCR road bike has a more relaxed geometry than the RCR. &#8211; Stan Portus \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Like the RCR, the NCR CF is part of Van Rysel\u2019s race range, but the brand describes it as its \u201cmost all-round bike\u201d.<\/p><p>If the RCR is Van Rysel\u2019s pro-level machine, the NCR should have a broader appeal.<\/p><p>The NCR\u2019s geometry is slightly more relaxed than the RCR&#8217;s. Its wheelbase is 13cm longer and its top tube is 1.5cm shorter in a size medium. It also has a slightly higher stack at 548.3cm compared to the RCR\u2019s stack of 546cm, also in a size medium.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1333\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/04\/IMG_4656.jpg\" alt=\"Van Rysel NCR Shimano 105 drivetrain.\" class=\"wp-image-851105\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">This build features a mechanical Shimano 105 drivetrain. &#8211; Stan Portus \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Van Rysel says the bike has a sporty character for performance-oriented cyclists, but that it\u2019s still suitable for relative beginners and those wanting to start competing from a young age, with sizes from XXS.\u00a0<\/p><p>Its 35mm tyre clearance is 2mm wider than the RCR and Van Rysel says it can take on terrain from mountains to cobbles.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1333\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/04\/IMG_4659.jpg\" alt=\"Van Rysel NCR road bike top tube.\" class=\"wp-image-851096\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The bike is UCI-approved and is said to suit those wanting to compete from a young age. &#8211; Stan Portus \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>This NCR CF is built with <a href=\"https:\/\/forum.bikeradar.com\/discussion\/13111993\/fulcrum-racing-700-db-wheelset\">Fulcrum Racing 700 DB<\/a> wheels shod in 28mm Hutchinson tyres, a mechanical Shimano 105 groupset, and Van Rysel\u2019s own-brand aluminium stem and handlebar. It costs \u00a32,000.\u00a0<\/p><p>Van Rysel says the carbon fibre frameset weighs 1,613g in a size medium. The complete bike is said to weigh 8.75kg.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-van-rysel-e-edr-af\">Van Rysel E-EDR AF<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1333\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/04\/IMG_4683.jpg\" alt=\"Van Rysel E-EDR AF electric road bike.\" class=\"wp-image-851118\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Van Rysel E-EDR AF ebike looks a lot like a non-assisted bike. &#8211; Stan Portus \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Away from its racing bikes, Van Rysel also has an endurance <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-electric-road-bikes\">electric road bike<\/a> called the E-EDR AF, which retails for \u00a32,300.\u00a0<\/p><p>Announced in January this year, the E-EDR AF looks a lot like a non-electric road bike. The electric bike battery is hidden in the slender down tube and the wide-ranging cassette obscures the rear-hub motor.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1333\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/04\/IMG_4687.jpg\" alt=\"Van Rysel E-EDR AF downtube.\" class=\"wp-image-851120\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The down tube hides the battery. &#8211; Stan Portus \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The Mahle X35 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/electric-bike-motors\">electric bike motor<\/a> has 40Nm of torque and three assistance modes. It is powered by a 250Wh battery, which is claimed to provide up to 100km of range. You can also use an external battery to extend the range of the bike.\u00a0<\/p><p>Elsewhere, there is a BC900 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-bike-computers\">bike computer<\/a>, which Van Rysel says has been designed specifically for the E-EDR AF.
