{"id":63280,"date":"2024-05-03T18:22:01","date_gmt":"2024-05-03T16:22:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/80c982c8-62b3-4e31-b640-976c34d0f8db"},"modified":"2024-05-03T18:59:40","modified_gmt":"2024-05-03T16:59:40","slug":"analysis-with-foxs-new-speedsuit-spotted-at-fort-william-is-mountain-biking-about-to-enter-an-aero-optimised-era","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/cyclingplus\/rss_feed\/analysis-with-foxs-new-speedsuit-spotted-at-fort-william-is-mountain-biking-about-to-enter-an-aero-optimised-era\/","title":{"rendered":"Analysis | With Fox\u2019s new SpeedSuit spotted at Fort William, is mountain biking about to enter an aero-optimised era?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\">Just how tight is too tight for the downhill brigade? <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Luke Marshall\n      <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Friday, 03 May 2024 at 16:22 PM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>Fox has kicked up a dust cloud of controversy at this weekend\u2019s opening round of the 2024 UCI DH World Cup with the launch of the SpeedSuit RS \u2013 a new form-fitting speed suit for downhill racing.<\/p><p>In a sport where every second \u2013 no, millisecond \u2013 can count, the likes of Tahn\u00e9e Seagrave, Nina Hoffmann and Laurie Greenland \u2013 all spotted in the SpeedSuit \u2013 are looking for every advantage on the Fort William hillside as the new campaign gets under way.<\/p><p>It may feel as though we\u2019ve been here before \u2013 but is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/fitness-and-training\/downhill-mountain-biking-explained\">downhill racing<\/a> about to enter a new aero era?<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Laurie Greenland seems happy about the new Fox SpeedSuit RS. &#8211; Nick Clark \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-history-lesson\">A history lesson<\/h2><p>Back in the late 90s and early 2000s, when downhill was establishing its own identity and diverging from Lycra-clad cross-country racers, riders started wearing loose motocross kits. MTB clothing brands jumped on board to give downhill its rough-around-the-edges character.<\/p><p>There was even a racer&#8217;s agreement that Lycra skinsuits wouldn&#8217;t be worn during competitions (except at the World Championships), even though they had a definite speed advantage. Rachel Atherton, who finished second behind Moseley, made her feelings clear by writing &#8216;Skinsuits suck&#8217; on her arms for the podium ceremony.<\/p><p>By October 2008, the UCI had its say and brought in a rule that banned skinsuits and &#8216;tight-fitting clothing&#8217;. We even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/news\/uci-ban-skinsuits-and-open-face-helmets-for-mountain-bike-competition\">reported on it during the early days of BikeRadar<\/a>.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-uci-has-its-say-again-nbsp-nbsp\">The UCI has its say\u2026 again\u00a0\u00a0<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/05\/GettyImages-1578480299-1.jpg\" alt=\"Britain's Charlie Hatton competes in the men's elite mountain bike downhill final at the Nevis Range Mountain Resort, near Fort William in the Scottish Highlands, during the UCI Cycling World Championships in Scotland on August 5, 2023\" class=\"wp-image-861611\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Race-focused MTB clothing has been getting tighter over the past few years. &#8211; Andy Buchanan \/ AFP \/ Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Since then, as downhill racing has matured, and riders, bike brands, suspension manufacturers and component companies continue their quest to produce the next best product to eke out more speed, so have the clothing companies.<\/p><p>As such, riders&#8217; kit has become progressively tighter, especially during the last five years. So much so that in 2023, the UCI reversed its Lycra-based material rule for downhillers.\u00a0<\/p><p>Still, the kit couldn\u2019t be a one-piece suit and needed a separate top and pants. It should also, as <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.ctfassets.net\/761l7gh5x5an\/6qYIYIddcAPjN248n7tVDI\/89a7e092c1b99d839a738027c8eec63d\/UCI_MTB_Rules_-_Part_IV_-_ENG.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UCI rule 4.3.011<\/a> states, \u201cbe of a type specifically designed and sold for use in BMX Racing or Mountain Bike downhill events. Jerseys designed for road cycling, skinsuits, or one-piece suits comprising the jersey and the pants\/shorts are not permitted for use in downhill events\u201d.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-enter-the-fox-speedsuit-rs\">Enter the Fox SpeedSuit RS<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1067\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/05\/O5A9992.jpg\" alt=\"Laurie Greenland wearing the Fox SpeedSuit RS at the 2024 Fort William World Cup\" class=\"wp-image-861655\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Is the SpeedSuit a sign of things to come in mountain biking? &#8211; Nick Clark<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Fast forward to 2024 and Fox\u2019s new SpeedSuit RS has entered the picture.\u00a0<\/p><p>While this two-piece outfit circumvents the UCI\u2019s latest rule, it\u2019s no doubt going to be one of the main talking points in the Fort William pits this weekend.<\/p><p>It\u2019s fair to say Fox has taken its thinking outside the box with this one, innovating on something interesting for us to admire\/laugh\/cringe (delete as appropriate) about. It\u2019s essentially a compression top with pre-fitted protection and a form-fitted, high dungaree.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1067\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/05\/O5A9994.jpg\" alt=\"Laurie Greenland wearing the Fox SpeedSuit RS at the 2024 Fort William World Cup\" class=\"wp-image-861654\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Aero is fast, after all. &#8211; Nick Clark \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The UCI\u2019s rule states the jersey must be tucked in or tight-fitting and Fox has scored top marks there, even if DH clothing has become increasingly form-fitting over the past few years<\/p><p>Fox unveiled a one-piece motocross version of its SpeedSuit in January this year for sponsored rider Christian Craig. Or will we look back on the 2024 Fort William World Cup as a short-lived return to the headlines for riders seeking a wind-cheating advantage?<\/p><p>Does it even meet all of the UCI\u2019s regulations? Is it simply a publicity stunt? This is a sport raced against the clock and every advantage counts. We live in a sporting world where everything is designed to give competitors an advantage \u2013 and the same applies to downhill.\u00a0<\/p><p>Someone is always going to take the heat for doing things differently until it becomes the norm, at least when it comes to top-tier racing.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-s-next\">What\u2019s next?<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"688\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/03\/GettyImages-1241647384.jpg\" alt=\"Peter Sagan wearing Specialized TT5 helmet at 2022 Tour de France.\" class=\"wp-image-820411\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Coming to a downhill race near you? &#8211; Ritzau Scanpix \/ AFP \/ Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>There\u2019s an obvious parallel to ski racing. The general public doesn\u2019t ski in speed suits, even though they\u2019re available to buy.\u00a0<\/p><p>However, the racers compete in them. I\u2019m not likely to nip off and buy one of these to squeeze my middle-aged belly into, but if it&#8217;s the best tool for the job of racing down a mountain as fast as possible, so be it. Mountain bikers in the SpeedSuit look no more daft than road and gravel riders in Lycra.<\/p><p>Where will it end, though? Road cycling has followed mountain biking\u2019s lead with the adoption of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/road-disc-brakes-everything-you-need-to-know\">disc brakes<\/a>.
