For many riders, this may not be an issue, however, it\u2019s worth ensuring you\u2019re happy with what\u2019s on offer before you buy.<\/p><\/div><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container\"><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Canyon Ultimate CF SL 8 Aero frame<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The frame shape is identical to the top-flight Ultimate CFR. &#8211; Scott Windsor \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>In terms of shape, the Ultimate CF SL frameset is identical to the range-topping <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/bikes\/road-bikes\/canyon-ultimate-cfr-di2-2023-review\">Ultimate CFR<\/a>.<\/p><p>Developed in partnership with Swiss Side (which provides aerodynamic expertise, performance consulting and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/pro-bike\/aero-vs-lightweight-mont-ventoux\">race simulation<\/a> tools for numerous brands and professional teams), Canyon claims this fifth generation Ultimate is 5 watts more efficient at 45kph compared to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/bikes\/road-bikes\/canyon-ultimate-cf-sl-disc-8-0-di2-aero-review\">its predecessor<\/a>.<\/p><p>The frameset retains a familiar silhouette, but the truncated aerofoil shapes have been sharpened and elongated, while a D-shaped seatpost has been added in place of a round one.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1067\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/04\/Canyon-Ultimate-CF-SL-8-Aero-12.jpg\" alt=\"Canyon Ultimate CF SL 8 Aero road bike bottle cages\" class=\"wp-image-829197\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Our test bike weighs 7.83kg. &#8211; Scott Windsor \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Up front, the Ultimate CF SL 8 Aero adopts Canyon\u2019s sleek and adjustable CP0018 Aerocockpit, which first debuted on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/bikes\/road-bikes\/canyon-aeroad-cfr-di2-review\">Aeroad CFR<\/a> \u2013 Canyon\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-aero-road-bike\">aero road bike<\/a> \u2013 in 2020.<\/p><p>Canyon claims a size medium Ultimate CF SL frame weighs 1,062.4g. Our test bike (also a size medium) weighs a competitive 7.83kg, including two composite bottle cages supplied by Canyon.<\/p><p>As you might expect for a direct-to-consumer brand such as Canyon, though, the major selling point of the Ultimate CF SL range is arguably the value proposition.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1067\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/04\/Canyon-Ultimate-CF-SL-8-Aero-14.jpg\" alt=\"Canyon Ultimate CF SL 8 Aero road bike fork\" class=\"wp-image-829199\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Canyon Ultimate CF SL 8 Aero &#8211; Scott Windsor \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The \u00a34,799 \/ \u20ac4,999 \/ AU$7,649 asking price is notably lower than similarly specced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-road-bikes\">road bikes<\/a> from rival brands.<\/p><p>Specialized\u2019s Tarmac SL8 Pro (which uses the American brand\u2019s second-tier Fact 10r carbon fibre layup), for example, costs \u00a38,000 \/ $8,500 \/ \u20ac8,500 for a build with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/components\/groupsets\/sram-force-axs-2023-review\">SRAM Force AXS<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/components\/groupsets\/groupset-road\/shimano-ultegra-r8170-di2-review\">Shimano Ultegra Di2 R8100<\/a>.<\/p><p>It\u2019s also a decent chunk cheaper than the Focus Izalco Max 9.8, which costs \u00a36,599 \/ \u20ac6,799, although it\u2019s worth noting its frameset uses the top-spec carbon blend Focus offers.<\/p><\/div><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container\"><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Canyon Ultimate CF SL 8 Aero geometry<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1067\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/04\/Canyon-Ultimate-CF-SL-8-Aero-02.jpg\" alt=\"Angled pack shot of the Canyon Ultimate CF SL 8 Aero road bike\" class=\"wp-image-829187\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The geometry has been tweaked to bring it in line with the Aeroad. &#8211; Scott Windsor \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>While the frameset shares a similar appearance with its predecessors, this latest version of the Ultimate saw a few geometry tweaks to bring it in line with the Aeroad.<\/p><p>The changes are subtle, though, with stack and reach figures only changing by a few millimetres.<\/p><p>Reach, for example, has been increased by just 2mm on my size medium test bike to 393mm. However, the stack is now 7mm lower on a size medium at 560mm.<\/p><p>For comparison, the Focus Izalco Max is a little taller and longer with 571mm of stack and 399mm of reach in a size L\/56.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1067\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/04\/Canyon-Ultimate-CF-SL-8-Aero-11.jpg\" alt=\"Canyon Ultimate CF SL 8 Aero road bike cockpit\" class=\"wp-image-829196\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Aerocockpit is the only front-end option for this frameset. &#8211; Scott Windsor \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The Specialized Tarmac SL8 Pro, meanwhile, is closer with a stack height of 565mm and 393mm of reach in a size 56cm.<\/p><p>The Ultimate&#8217;s ride position is classically long and low, as you\u2019d expect of a racing bike. Given this, it\u2019s worth noting the handlebar stack height can only be increased by up to 15mm using headset spacers, due to the quill stem-style system.<\/p><p>Likewise, the size medium Ultimate CF SL gets a 100mm stem paired with a 410mm (centre to centre) handlebar, which can be adjusted by 20mm to offer a 390mm or 430mm bar width.<\/p><p>Unfortunately, Canyon doesn\u2019t offer a choice of stem length or handlebar width at the point of purchase.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1067\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/04\/Canyon-Ultimate-CF-SL-8-Aero-15.jpg\" alt=\"Canyon Ultimate CF SL 8 Aero road bike frame\" class=\"wp-image-829200\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The bike has a 50mm-deep front wheel. &#8211; Scott Windsor \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>It\u2019s also worth noting the Canyon CP0018 Aerocockpit is the only front-end option for this frameset, due to the proprietary fork steerer and stem design. This means you can\u2019t swap in a standard stem and bar as you can on many other bikes.<\/p><p>Canyon has previously said you can purchase the CP0018 Aerocockpit in alternative sizes. Scott Windsor \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Despite its competitive price, Canyon hasn\u2019t made many compromises in the build spec.<\/p><p>The Ultimate CF SL 8 Aero is the top spec build in its respective range. It gets a full <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/components\/groupsets\/groupset-road\/shimano-ultegra-r8170-di2-review\">Shimano Ultegra Di2 R8100 groupset<\/a>, complete with the new and improved RT-CL800 disc brake rotors.<\/p><p>Canyon has even specced a 4iiii Precision 3 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-power-meters\">power meter<\/a> crank. It\u2019s a single-sided unit, meaning it measures the power produced by your left leg and doubles it to estimate your total power output.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1066\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/04\/Canyon-Ultimate-CF-SL-8-Aero-07.jpg\" alt=\"Canyon Ultimate CF SL 8 Aero road bike front brake\" class=\"wp-image-829192\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Ultimate has the new and improved Shimano RT-CL800 rotors. &#8211; Scott Windsor \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>In terms of gearing and wheels, Canyon supplies speed-friendly options. This sees a 52\/36t <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/cranksets\">crankset<\/a> paired with a tight, 11-30t cassette out back and a set of DT Swiss ARC 1600 Dicut wheels.<\/p><p>The wheelset has a 50mm-deep front rim and a 62mm-deep rear, built to DT Swiss 350 hubs with DT Aero Comp spokes.<\/p><p>These rims are on trend. They are tubeless-ready and measure 20mm wide internally and 27 mm wide externally, though they used hooked rather than hookless rims. This means they\u2019re compatible with clincher and tubeless <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-road-bike-tyres\">road bike tyres<\/a>.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1067\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/04\/Canyon-Ultimate-CF-SL-8-Aero-10.jpg\" alt=\"Canyon Ultimate CF SL 8 Aero road bike wheel\" class=\"wp-image-829195\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The bike has a 25c tyre up front and a 28c tyre at the rear. &#8211; Scott Windsor \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>On that topic, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/components\/tyres\/road-bike-tyres\/schwalbe-one-tle-road-tyre-review\">Schwalbe\u2019s mid-range One TLE tyre<\/a> is specced here, with a 700x25c up front and a wider 28c on the rear.<\/p><p>Although it\u2019s a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-tubeless-road-tyres\">tubeless tyre<\/a>, Canyon ships the bike set up with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/bike-inner-tubes\">butyl inner tubes<\/a>. I don\u2019t think the small amount of additional weight of the deep rims (compared to shallower ones) costs much in terms of climbing performance against the stopwatch \u2013 but it nevertheless feels more sedate on hills than I\u2019d expected.<\/p><p>The middling Schwalbe One TLE tyres also contribute to this. Though fine training tyres, these exhibit around 50 per cent more rolling resistance per tyre compared to the pricier <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/components\/tyres\/road-bike-tyres\/schwalbe-pro-one-tubeless-review\">Pro One TLE<\/a>, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bicyclerollingresistance.com\/road-bike-reviews\/schwalbe-one-tle-performance-2020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bicyclerollingresistance.com.<\/a><\/p><p>It wouldn\u2019t cost loads to upgrade these, but they\u2019re a small weakness in an otherwise excellent spec.<\/p><p>The handling is sharp and engaging, with the front end feeling stiff and responsive.
