You need to be fast<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Top gravel races attract serious pros, but that doesn&#8217;t mean you&#8217;re not invited. &#8211; Life Time Grand Prix<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Like any race, riders in the front pack of a gravel race will be munching miles at a pace we can only dream of.<\/p><p>But a gravel race\u2019s field primarily comprises everyday riders for whom the challenge is simply getting round.<\/p><p>More experienced riders outside the lead pack will, naturally, form groups as they settle into a steady pace. And that&#8217;s fine. &#8211; Mick Kirkman \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>However, many others will ride an event like an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/fitness-and-training\/10-steps-to-your-best-ever-time-trial\">individual time trial<\/a>, chuffing along at a pace and style that suits them.<\/p><p>Practically speaking, gravel racing is a lot less stressful than road racing or mountain biking for slower riders \u2013 wide tracks permit easy overtaking and few are run on a closed loop, so you won\u2019t be caught by successive tidal waves of watt-blasting turbo groups.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-you-need-a-gravel-bike\">2. You need a gravel bike<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1333\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2023\/07\/Grinduro-Wales-2023-bikes-3-of-31-a8d11c0.jpg\" alt=\"Tom Ryan\u2019s 2013 Cannondale CAAD-X gravel bike conversion\" class=\"wp-image-738693\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">You don&#8217;t need a modern bike to have fun. &#8211; Jack Luke \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-gravel-bikes\">gravel bike<\/a> is the best tool for the job, but it\u2019s by no means a requirement. <\/p><p>Mountain bikes, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/all-road-bikes-explained\">all-road bikes<\/a>, repurposed cyclocross bikes, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/tandem-cycles-explained\">tandems<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/riding-during-lockdown\">fixed-gear bikes<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-fat-bike\">fat bikes<\/a> are common sights at the start line of a gravel race \u2013 so long as you have any <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/routes-and-rides\/gravel-race-kit-list\">essential race-mandated kit<\/a>, you will not be turned away. <\/p><p>Well-organised races will provide an overview of the terrain you should expect to encounter on the ride. Use this valuable intel to refine your setup. <\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-you-need-the-latest-kit\">3. You need the latest kit<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"5472\" height=\"3648\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2023\/02\/Specialized-Diverge-STR-Expert-gravel-bike-review-BikeRadar-riding-shots-6-b5a9c77.jpg\" alt=\"Specialized Diverge STR Expert gravel bike review BikeRadar\" class=\"wp-image-715926\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">We all like the idea of owning a flashy go-fast gravel whip with bump-taming wiggly bits, but what you have is probably fine. &#8211; Jack Luke \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>If you already own a gravel bike, avoid the knee-jerk urge to upgrade for the sake of it, and certainly don\u2019t let not having the latest, shiniest kit become a barrier to entering.<\/p><p>Sites such as BikeRadar showcase the latest and greatest tech at the cutting edge of performance, but the existence of such tech doesn\u2019t, in any way, render yours obsolete.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1261\" height=\"841\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/05\/Ted-King-2018-Dirty-Kanza-SRAM-Force.jpg\" alt=\"Ted King's Cannondale Super X cyclocross bike from the 2018 Dirty Kanza \/ Unbound gravel race\" class=\"wp-image-865369\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">As recently as 2018, Unbound was still being won on cyclocross bikes. &#8211; Josh Patterson \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>A glance at a gravel race start line will reveal most riders are not buying \u00a314,000 bikes decked in full zip-zapping and beep-booping carbotanium regalia \u2013 incredibly competitive times are still posted on what could be considered retrograde tech.<\/p><p>Trends needn&#8217;t dictate how you choose to set up your bike \u2013 while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/tech\/gravel-tyre-trends-2024\">45mm tyres are now the choice of pro racers<\/a>, we all survived on 40mm tyres for a very long time. <\/p><p>If you have the means, it\u2019s fine to satiate the tech hunger of your inner magpie now and then, but it\u2019s not essential \u2013 don&#8217;t believe the hype and just rung what yah brung! <\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-you-need-to-be-able-to-ride-silly-long-distances\">4. You need to be able to ride silly long distances<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2400\" height=\"1600\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2023\/06\/Dirty-Reiver-2023-15-825804f.jpg\" alt=\"Dirty Reiver 2023\" class=\"wp-image-734057\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Our very own Robin Weaver \u2013 a seriously accomplished mountain bike racer and genuine athlete \u2013 opted for the 130km version of the Dirty Reiver for his first gravel race, and even he found it difficult. &#8211; Mick Kirkman \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Early gravel races were characterised by their immense distances, and serious pros still target these, but most events have multiple distance options.<\/p><p>The OG distance at Unbound might be 200 miles, but there are route options down to 25 miles (and up to 350 miles if you\u2019re a real pervert).<\/p><p>The same is true at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/pro-bike\/traka-2024-gravel-tech-gallery\">Traka<\/a> \u2013 200km is the typical distance, but there are also 50km, 100km, 360km and \u2013 bleurgh \u2013 543km distances.<\/p><p>The Dirty Reiver splits partway through the route, giving riders the choice between 65km, 130km and 200km rides \u2013 a great option if your legs feel like a shrivelled-up Pepperami halfway through the day.<\/p><p>There&#8217;s great satisfaction in completing a long ride, but if you only want a gravel racing taster, there\u2019s no need to become a full-time gravel hermit spending all your time training for a challenge of epic proportions. <\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-gravel-racing-is-scary-and-exclusive\">5. Gravel racing is scary and exclusive<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1920\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/05\/Grinduro-2021-scaled.jpeg\" alt=\"Grinduro 2021\" class=\"wp-image-865503\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Gravel racing is as much about the vibes as it is the riding. &#8211; Jack Luke \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Traditional gravel races such as Unbound and the Dirty Reiver are timed from start to finish, but other racing formats have opened up the discipline to new riders.<\/p><p>Enduro-style events such as Grinduro include timed racing sections intercepted with non-timed \u2018transfer\u2019 stages. Riders are encouraged to ride these at party pace, providing lots of time to recover \u2013 or drink beers while languishing at a feed stop.
