The result, the brands claim, is a 3-4 watt saving over a bike with no bags.<\/p><p>This would equate to something in the region of a three-minute advantage over the 200-mile Unbound route.<\/p><p>So why are we yet to see a host of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/bike-frame-bags-explained\">frame bags<\/a> deployed with aero intentions?<\/p><p>The answer could simply be that racers don\u2019t have the means to test various setups in a wind tunnel.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/06\/DSC03964-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Tiffany Cromwell's Canyon Grail\" class=\"wp-image-865867\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Cromwell's smaller frame simply doesn't have the space. - Sam Andrews \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>A frame bag can also block access to or limit the size of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-cycling-water-bottles\">water bottles<\/a>. Given some riders\u2019 preference to use large bottles, as shown by Tiffany Cromwell, there simply isn\u2019t space in some bike frames to fit a bag.<\/p><p>But given Apidura\u2019s claims, this is a tech trend worth keeping an eye on.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-going-long\">Going long\u00a0<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/06\/DSC03524-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-866787\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Matching bags make for a very tidy setup. - Sam Andrews \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>While racers in the \u2018shorter\u2019 200-mile event tended towards lightweight setups, riders tackling Unbound XL\u2019s 350-mile route generally opted for some extra carrying capacity.<\/p><p>Marius Karteusch\u2019s 3T Extrema Italia is kitted out with a pairing of Cyclite top tube and frame bags to handle the usual spares and food, alongside the additional clothing such a long race requires.<\/p><p>But take a look away from the bags and it\u2019s clear care has been taken to attach smaller items in an aesthetically pleasing manner.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/06\/DSC03530-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-866788\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Time has clearly been taken to attach these in a secure and tidy way. -
