The finished build weighs a scant 5.075kg.\u00a0<\/p><p>That\u2019s more than 600g lighter than the all-bells-and-whistles SuperSix Evo LAB71 disc-brake bike <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/tech\/2023-hill-climb-tech-trends\">he piloted to victory in the Struggle in 2023<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p><p>So why is Feather going back to the bike that started it all?\u00a0<\/p><p>After using the 2018 SuperSix Evo for 20,000km of training, the frame was expectedly starting to show its age. <\/p><p>Feather contacted Rob Granville at Carbon Bike Repair in Leatherhead, Surrey and the pair concocted a plan to get the frameset even lighter by not only stripping the original paint but removing excess carbon fibre where it wasn\u2019t needed. <\/p><p>While the latter might initially seem a surefire recipe for disaster (and it is in the wrong hands), this was made possible by robotic technology that can analyse the wall thicknesses of carbon tubes.<\/p><p>Let\u2019s delve into the fascinating journey of the finished build.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Super Lightweight Stripped Cannondale SuperSix Hill Climb Bike\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/EQ_8WOs21R4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-wait-haven-t-we-seen-this-bike-before-nbsp\">Wait, haven\u2019t we seen this bike before?\u00a0<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The SuperSix Evo Feather took the win on in 2019. &#8211; Simon Bromley<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>We covered<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/pro-bike\/andrew-feathers-cannondale-supersix-evo-hill-climb-bike\"> Feather\u2019s Cannondale SuperSix Evo Hi-Mod in 2019<\/a>, which weighed 5.4kg in a SRAM Red eTap build.\u00a0<\/p><p>However, this is a sister bike. Feather owns two identical Cannondale SuperSix Evo Hi-Mod\u2019s \u2013 this 2018 bike and the aforementioned 2019 build. <\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-i-robot-nbsp\">I, Robot\u00a0<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1436\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/06\/Screenshot-2024-06-06-at-13.53.24-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Weighing Cannondale SuperSix Evo on a set of scales \" class=\"wp-image-866693\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A 790g frame was already a respectable foundation. &#8211; Carbon Bike Repair<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>When you\u2019ve already done all you can to lower weight, you have to start getting creative for any further gains (losses?). <\/p><p>Enter Carbon Bike Repair, who have repaired and restored more than 15,000 frames since opening up shop in 2014.\u00a0<\/p><p>With carbon frames becoming ever lighter, the wall thicknesses of the tubes have decreased, with some as low as 0.4mm.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1437\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/06\/Screenshot-2024-06-06-at-13.55.39-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Robot grinding out carbon on a tube \" class=\"wp-image-866696\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The robot analyses and can return the tube to its correct wall thickness and profile. &#8211; Carbon Bike Repair<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>In 2022, the company invested in a robot that can scan wall thickness and return it to the exact specification of each manufacturer consistently. The robot is able to work within an accuracy of 0.03mm. \u00a0<\/p><p>\u201cIf it takes technology to design and build a modern carbon bike, then you need technology to repair them,\u201d Granville explains.<\/p><p>He agreed to take on this project \u201cas a showcase exercise in what is possible in reducing weight without compromising stiffness or rider safety. There is nothing like a hard climb to test the theory.\u201d\u00a0<\/p><p>While Granville\u2019s robot is usually used to return a damaged carbon tube to how it was originally, Feather\u2019s frame is the first time the company has used it to remove \u2018excess\u2019 carbon.<\/p><p>The stripped frame weighed 790g and the fork 290g.\u00a0<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-under-the-knife-nbsp\">Under the knife\u00a0<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1439\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/06\/Screenshot-2024-06-06-at-13.54.07-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Stripping paint away from Cannondale SuperSix Evo \" class=\"wp-image-866694\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Feather&#8217;s frame mid-strip. &#8211; Carbon Bike Repair<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>More than 100g was shaved off the frameset once the paint was removed.\u00a0<\/p><p>The utmost care is required when stripping paint from carbon frames because of the material\u2019s abrasive nature.<\/p><p>With the paint stripped, an ultrasound depth check was conducted on the frame\u2019s tubes to establish where excess material could be removed.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1437\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/06\/Screenshot-2024-06-06-at-13.56.19-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Analysis carbon tube wall thicknesses on computer \" class=\"wp-image-866697\" style=\"aspect-ratio:3\/2;object-fit:cover\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The top and down tubes were identified as areas of weight reduction. &#8211; Carbon Bike Repair<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>\u2019Excess material\u2019 suggests significant amounts of carbon being removed, but this only amounted to approximately 0.01mm on the top and down tubes, highlighting the robot\u2019s effectiveness.<\/p><p>Remember, Cannondale would have designed the frame to be as light as possible while preserving the desired riding characteristics in the first place.\u00a0<\/p><p>Granville says: \u201cThis makes no actual difference to the overall wall thickness providing one doesn\u2019t break the carbon structure.\u201d\u00a0<\/p><p>In areas such as the bottom bracket or head tube, it doesn\u2019t make sense to go lighter because that would be detrimental to the tube\u2019s stiffness.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1429\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/06\/Screenshot-2024-06-06-at-13.56.52-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Down tube carbon damage \" class=\"wp-image-866698\" style=\"aspect-ratio:3\/2;object-fit:cover\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The section in question on the down tube that required repairing. &#8211; Carbon Bike Repair<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>It wasn\u2019t all plain sailing \u2013 four holes appeared in the down tube after removing the material from where the carbon wasn\u2019t originally overlapped properly in the mould. A section of the tube required a careful strip repair.\u00a0<\/p><p>The finished result after the paint strip, carbon makeover, new graphics and lacquer was 620g for the frame and a 270g fork.\u00a0<\/p><p>They could have gone even lower \u2013 Granville tried to convince Feather to omit the bottle cage rivnuts, but they remained.\u00a0<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-10g-graphics-nbsp\">10g graphics\u00a0<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1920\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/06\/IMG_8506-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"SuperSix Evo graphic on Andrew Feather's Cannondale SuperSix Evo 2024\" class=\"wp-image-866735\" style=\"aspect-ratio:3\/2;object-fit:cover\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The bronze mist is akin to what&#8217;s used on the Specialized Aethos. &#8211; Kai Eves \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>A weight-weenie build deserves a weight-weenie paintjob.\u00a0<\/p><p>But why bother with paint at all if all-out lightness is the goal? The lacquer over any paint protects the carbon from damage. Kai Eves \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The build is a far cry from what Feather ran in 2018, which then consisted of own-brand components with Hunt hill climb tubular wheels.\u00a0<\/p><p>For 2024, Feather\u2019s running a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/components\/groupsets\/groupset-road\/shimano-dura-ace-di2-r9170-first-ride-review\">Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 R9150<\/a> electronic groupset, pairing an 11-28t <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/workshop\/bike-cassettes\">cassette<\/a> with a 39t single chainring.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1920\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/06\/IMG_8558-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Rotor Aldhu power meter crankset\" class=\"wp-image-866754\" style=\"aspect-ratio:3\/2;object-fit:cover\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Feather has kept the front derailleur hanger (where he could also save weight) just in case he ever switches to 2x. &#8211; Kai Eves \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>He\u2019s sticking with his usual 172.5mm crank length because \u201cit\u2019s something I\u2019ve always used\u201d.\u00a0<\/p><p>While there are lighter options available, Feather sticks with his Shimano Dura-Ace R9100 pedals for the same reason.\u00a0<\/p><p>Like the rest of his bikes, Feather\u2019s running a Rotor InSpider power meter, but reckons the bike&#8217;s weight would be 4.8kg if it was removed.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1920\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/06\/IMG_8528-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Cane Creek eeBrakes \" class=\"wp-image-866743\" style=\"aspect-ratio:3\/2;object-fit:cover\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The icing on the cake. &#8211;
