With the Crux DSW, the focus is again directed towards the scales, with the frameset and one complete build available at launch. <\/p><p>The move brings Specialized\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-gravel-race-bikes\">gravel race bike<\/a> down to a \u00a32,300 \/ $2,600 \/ \u20ac2,700 \/ AU$4,000 entry point and shows that the biggest brands are still keen to push alloy frame design.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-much-does-the-specialized-crux-dsw-weigh\">How much does the Specialized Crux DSW weigh?<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A 56cm frameset weighs 1.98kg. &#8211; Specialized<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Specialized claims the Crux DSW frame weighs 1,399g in a size 56cm.<\/p><p>Specialized pairs the frame with the S-Works Crux&#8217;s carbon fork bringing the frameset weight to 1.98kg.<\/p><p>Specialized says a complete Crux DSW build weighs 9.37kg. <\/p><p>For comparison, Trek claims its \u00a33,000 Checkpoint ALR 5 is 9.86kg in a size 56cm. Merida\u2019s Silex 700 weighs a claimed 10.14kg while Canyon\u2019s Grizl 7 is heavier still at 10.68kg.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-dsw\">What is DSW?<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/06\/Specialized-Crux-DSW-09-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Graphic showing tubes of Specialized Crux DSW seperated.\" class=\"wp-image-867332\" style=\"aspect-ratio:3\/2;object-fit:cover\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Specialized&#8217;s latest Crux carries the D&#8217;Aluisio Smartweld name. &#8211; Specialized<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>As with several alloy bikes from Specialized, such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/bikes\/road-bikes\/specialized-allez-sport-2023-review\">Allez<\/a> and Diverge, the new Crux carries the D\u2019Aluisio Smartweld (DSW) name. <\/p><p>According to Specialized, this patented method for welding a bike frame is why the Crux \u201cis more than the lightest alloy gravel bike in the world.\u201d<\/p><p>Specialized says DSW helps create a &#8220;unique single-piece downtube and bottom bracket for the Crux DSW.&#8221; This, it claims, saves weight while simultaneously increasing responsiveness.<\/p><p>The DSW method sees Specialized hydroform the tube shapes with what it says are precisely matched joints. This allows the tubes to intersect \u201cwithout any old-fashioned mitring or fudging.\u201d<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1440\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/06\/Specialized-Crux-DSW-13-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Graphic comparing DSW welding and non-DSW welding.\" class=\"wp-image-867336\" style=\"aspect-ratio:3\/2;object-fit:cover\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">DSW welding is said to be stronger than the welding used on &#8216;traditional&#8217; alloy frames. &#8211; Specialized<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Specialized says that focusing the material needs towards the high-stress weld areas leads to \u201cstronger welds and, ultimately, a lighter frame that can be twice as durable as a traditional alloy frame.\u201d<\/p><p>After the 2021 Crux moved away from its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-cyclocross-bikes\">cyclocross<\/a> roots to cater for the burgeoning <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-gravel-bikes\">gravel bike<\/a> market, fans of the Californian brand were left with one fewer alloy options.<\/p><p>Alloy is often associated with lower prices and many riders, from recreational cyclists to keen racers, favour alloy for its value credentials.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tried-and-tested-features\">Tried and tested features<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/06\/ROAD-8280_CruxDSW_Social_Experience_06-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Three people riding Specialized Crux alloy. \" class=\"wp-image-867345\" style=\"aspect-ratio:3\/2;object-fit:cover\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The bike shares many features with the carbon Crux. &#8211; Specialized<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>While many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-aluminium-gravel-bikes\">alloy gravel bikes<\/a>, such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/news\/trek-checkpoint-driftless-alr-5\">Trek Checkpoint<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/news\/canyon-grizl-al-gravel\">Canyon Grizl<\/a>, are aimed slightly more towards adventure riding, Specialized has stuck with the Crux\u2019s lightweight race bike ethos.<\/p><p>The DSW design carries several features from the carbon Crux, such as the singular additional cage mount at the base of the down tube.<\/p><p>Tyre clearance remains unchanged with the frameset boasting clearance for 700x47c or 650&#215;2.1in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-gravel-tyres\/\">gravel tyres<\/a>. This matches the <a href=\"https:\/\/bikeradar.com\/features\/tech\/how-specialized-designed-the-diverge-str\">Diverge STR<\/a>, Specialized\u2019s dedicated adventure machine.<\/p><p>As with the carbon Crux, the tube shapes are slightly ovalised, prioritising low weight over any aero optimisation.<\/p><p>A feature found on many of Specialized\u2019s more affordable bikes is a fork from a much more expensive bike. This is the case with the Crux DSW as its Fact 12r carbon fork is the one you\u2019ll find on the \u00a311,300 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/bikes\/gravel-bikes\/specialized-s-works-crux-review\">S-Works Crux<\/a>.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-geometry\">Geometry<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1327\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/06\/ROAD-8280_CruxDSW_Social_Experience_16-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Person riding Specialized Crux DSW along trail. \" class=\"wp-image-867347\" style=\"aspect-ratio:3\/2;object-fit:cover\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Crux DSW has the same geometry as its carbon equivalent. &#8211; Specialized<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The Specialized Crux DSW also has the same geometry as the carbon Crux.<\/p><p>Specialized made the Crux longer in 2021, taking the bike from a nippy cyclocross racer to a more stable gravel platform.<\/p><p>A 56cm Crux DSW has a 397mm reach and a 378mm stack. Specialized also continues with a 72mm bottom bracket drop (on all but the two smallest sizes) to aid stability.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-pricing-and-availability\">Pricing and availability<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1709\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/06\/Specialized-Crux-DSW-05-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Specialized Crux DSW comp.\" class=\"wp-image-867328\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">There is one build available at launch. &#8211; Specialized<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Currently, the Crux DSW is available in one complete build only, alongside a frameset.<\/p><p>The singular build features a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/news\/2023-sram-apex-groupset\">Sram Apex mechanical<\/a> groupset with hydraulic disc brakes.
