{"id":65612,"date":"2024-06-12T12:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-06-12T10:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/54254284-38b6-4a3e-a85e-1f86dae59849"},"modified":"2024-06-12T13:25:33","modified_gmt":"2024-06-12T11:25:33","slug":"tour-de-france-bikes-2024-whos-riding-what","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/cyclingplus\/rss_feed\/tour-de-france-bikes-2024-whos-riding-what\/","title":{"rendered":"Tour de France bikes 2024: who\u2019s riding what?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\">All the bikes and tech on display at the 2024 Tour De France <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Jack Luke\n      <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Wednesday, 12 June 2024 at 10:00 AM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>The 2024 Tour de France starts on 29 June in Florence, making a loop through Cesenatico, home of 1998 winner Marco Pantani before heading to France. <\/p><p>This year\u2019s route is unusual, looping anticlockwise past Paris before crossing the Pyrenees and finishing after 3,493km in Nice.<\/p><p>There are two time trials \u2013 25.3km on stage 7 in Burgundy and the final 33.7km stage from Monaco to Nice, which will see the riders on their fast, specialist equipment.\u00a0<\/p><p>As usual, there\u2019s some very flashy tech on show throughout the race and we can expect more to be announced in the run-up to the Grand Depart. This will probably include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/news\/2025-trek-madone-spotted\">Trek\u2019s new skinny-tubed Madone<\/a> look-alike, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/news\/2025-pinarello-dogma-spotted\">unreleased updated Pinarello Dogma F<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/news\/2025-canyon-aeroad-spotted\">refreshed Canyon Aeroad<\/a>. <\/p><p>More will certainly be unearthed by the sharp-eyed tech nerds at BikeRadar as the race proceeds.<\/p><p>Read on for a complete list of the bikes in this year\u2019s Tour de France, along with the components they\u2019re fitted with and our pick of some of the new bikes and tech to keep an eye out for.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tour-de-france-2024-bike-brands\">Tour de France 2024 bike brands<\/h2><p>The 2024 Tour de France peloton consists of 22 teams of eight, making 176 riders in total. <\/p><p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/pro-bike\/worldtour-bikes\">18 WorldTour squads<\/a> receive an automatic invitation to compete, while four second-tier Pro Continental teams receive a wildcard invitation. Between them, 19 bike brands are represented.\u00a0<\/p><p>New brands this year are ENVE with its Melee, which costs over \u00a310,000 in a consumer build with Ultegra. This is ridden by Team TotalEnergies. <\/p><p>Van Rysel&#8217;s \u00a39,000 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/pro-bike\/first-look-decathlon-returns-to-worldtour-with-budget-superbikes\">RCR Pro bike<\/a> \u2013 the most affordable in the pro peloton \u2013 is used by Decathlon-AG2R.\u00a0<\/p><p>A notable leaver is Lapierre, which had been a feature of top-level men\u2019s cycling for 22 years. In some cases, such as the Cannondale SuperSix, they&#8217;re claimed to be more so.<\/p><p>With most pro bikes close to the 6.8kg <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/tech\/should-the-uci-bike-weight-limit-be-changed\">UCI bike weight limit<\/a>, there\u2019s no reason to have a separate climbing bike, so one bike can now do it all.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">No Campagnolo<\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/01\/20240119_017_Ashley-Quinlan-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Thompson Falcon Super Record Wireless bike at Velofollies\" class=\"wp-image-813091\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Campagnolo is absent from the Tour de France this year. &#8211; Ashley Quinlan \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Campagnolo has been a feature of the Tour for almost 100 years, but in the last few the number of teams using its groupsets has dwindled. Last year, there was one, this year there are none.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>That means all teams at the 2024 Tour de France will use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/components\/groupsets\/groupset-road\/shimano-dura-ace-di2-r9200-review\">Shimano Dura-Ace<\/a> or the latest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/components\/groupsets\/groupset-road\/sram-red-axs-review\">SRAM Red AXS groupset<\/a> on their bikes.\u00a0<\/p><p>There are no wheels from Campagnolo or its Fulcrum companion brand either.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>Will Campagnolo return to the pro peloton? Time will tell, but for now, its momentum appears to be in gravel, with a new second-tier <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/news\/campagnolo-ekar-gt\">Ekar GT groupset<\/a> joining the original Ekar in February.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1x will become even more important<\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1706\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/06\/DSC03962-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"SRAM Red XPLR AXS rear derailleur\" class=\"wp-image-865865\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">1&#215;13-speed SRAM Red XPLR made an appearance at the Unbound gravel race. &#8211; Sam Andrews \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The first outing of single-chainring only bikes on the race circuit a few years ago with Aqua Blue Sport ended unhappily, but 1x hasn\u2019t died in the pro peloton. <\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/tech\/why-was-1x-used-2023-tour-de-france\">Jonas Vingegaard rode a 1x bike<\/a> on two road stages of last year\u2019s Tour and there have been several other notable instances of riders using the tech \u2013 not least Primoz Rogli\u010d, when he won the penultimate-stage time trial at the 2023 Giro d\u2019Italia to clinch the overall victory.\u00a0<\/p><p>Will 1x go mainstream at the Tour? For pro riders, a major issue is the potentially larger jumps between gear ratios than with a 2x setup. <\/p><p>The increasing number of sprockets available makes this less of a problem though, with 12-speed cassettes providing one- or two-tooth jumps between the most-used ratios.<\/p><p>Now, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/news\/sram-red-xplr-axs-groupset-spotted\">new 13-speed SRAM Red XPLR groupset<\/a> has been spotted on gravel bikes ridden at Unbound. Having 13 ratios to choose from could help to increase acceptance of 1x setups in the Tour, with their simplicity, aero benefits and lower weight making them attractive.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Riders will take risks with tyre choices<\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"3000\" height=\"2000\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2023\/07\/Tour-de-France-2023-tech-82-e4c968b.jpg\" alt=\"32.2mm Continental GP5000 TT TR tyre on Tadej Poga\u010dar's Colnago V4Rs before the 2023 Tour de France Grand Depart\" class=\"wp-image-738010\" style=\"object-fit:cover;width:840px;height:auto\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A 32.2mm Continental GP5000 TT TR tyre on Tadej Poga\u010dar&#8217;s Colnago V4Rs before the 2023 Tour de France Grand Depart. &#8211; George Scott \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>As with disc brakes, it\u2019s taken a while for the pros to see the benefits of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-tubeless-road-tyres\">tubeless tyres<\/a>. But almost all teams have now swapped to these from glued-on tubular. <\/p><p>While inopportune flats were a fact of life with tubs, the sealant in tubeless tyres provides some protection to help keep you riding. Wheel and bike changes with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/road-bike-axle-standards\">thru-axles<\/a> have become much slicker too.<\/p><p>That looks to have led some riders to swap to lightweight time trial tyres in place of their sponsors\u2019 standard road tyres at the 2023 Tour. At the expense of reduced puncture resistance, most time trial tyres are lighter and faster-rolling than their road equivalents. We expect more riders to follow suit this year.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tour-de-france-2024-bikes\">Tour de France 2024 bikes<\/h2><p>All 18 WorldTour teams ride the Tour de France and every one of them gets the pick of the best bikes from their sponsors\u2019 ranges. That includes all teams using 12-speed wireless\/semi-wireless <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/electronic-groupsets\/\">electronic groupsets<\/a> on their road bikes and a choice of top-spec carbon wheels.<\/p><p>The invited Pro Continental teams (Israel-Premier Tech, Lotto-Dstny, TotalEnergies, Uno-X Mobility) too are on top-spec bikes and equipment \u2013 there\u2019s no second-best here.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-alpecin-deceuninck-adc\">Alpecin-Deceuninck (ADC)<\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\"
