It\u2019s fitted with a 400Wh battery, shaving some crucial grams.<\/p><p>Giant\u2019s high-tech carbon fibre frame is matched with an all-in-one carbon bar and stem. Using the brand\u2019s twin-link Maestro suspension, the Trance X Advanced E+ Elite 1 has 140mm of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/how-much-suspension-travel-do-i-need-on-my-mountain-bike\">rear-wheel travel<\/a>.<\/p><p>Fox\u2019s Factory-level 36 fork and Float X dampers are fitted, as is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/news\/sram-gx-eagle-transmission\">SRAM GX AXS Eagle Transmission<\/a> gearing. The bike retails for \u00a39,499.<\/p><p>A geometry <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/flip-chips\">flip chip<\/a> on the rocker linkage changes between low and high modes. In the low setting, the 65.8-degree head tube angle is mated with a 76-degree seat tube angle and a 480mm reach, cementing its trail-focused intentions. It uses <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/what-is-faster-mullet-bike-29er\">mixed wheel sizes<\/a> (29in front, 27.5in rear).<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Even on the brakes, the Giant&#8217;s suspension works impressively. &#8211; Laurence Crossman-Emms \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Keep the Trance X on shallower gradients and the combination of its low weight and powerful motor pays dividends; speed is easy to accumulate and maintain once you\u2019ve exceeded the motor cut-off.<\/p><p>Poppy, active and stable suspension irons out the trail; it works hard to provide grip and control, even when you\u2019re hard on the brakes.<\/p><p>Uphill, there\u2019s little standing in the way of the powerful motor, except its internal battery\u2019s range. Riders weighing 75kg shouldn\u2019t expect any more than 1,000 metres of ascent on a single charge in the lower-power modes, and that drops if you utilise the full 85Nm.<\/p><p>On gnarlier downhills, a steeper than average head angle, firm-compound tyres and stiff-feeling ride keep total control just outside of your grasp, blunting the Trance\u2019s performance.<\/p><\/div><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container\"><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-giant-trance-x-advanced-e-elite-1-rs-frame-suspension-and-motor\">Giant Trance X Advanced E+ Elite 1 RS frame, suspension and motor<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1065\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/06\/Giant-Trance-X-Advanced-E-Elite-1-lightweight-eMTB-18.jpg\" alt=\"Giant Trance X Advanced E+ Elite 1 lightweight eMTB\" class=\"wp-image-865954\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The SyncDrive Pro motor has been custom-tuned by Giant. &#8211; Andy Lloyd \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Made from Giant\u2019s Advanced carbon, where the front triangle is assembled as one piece of the material, the bike&#8217;s tubes are sleek.<\/p><p>Cables run internally via the headset, while there\u2019s a water bottle mount on the down tube. Andy Lloyd \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Sitting one down from the range-topping model, the Elite 1 boasts some fancy kit, representing reasonable value for money.<\/p><p>Fox\u2019s 150mm-travel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/components\/forks\/suspension-forks\/2021-fox-36-factory-grip2-fork-review\">Factory 36 fork<\/a> and Float X Factory shock headline the spec sheet.<\/p><p>SRAM\u2019s GX Eagle AXS Transmission derailleur and drivetrain are paired with Praxis Carbon ebike cranks. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/components\/brakes\/disc-brake-systems\/sram-code-r-brakes-review\">Code R brakes<\/a> clamp large rotors (220mm front, 200mm rear) and there\u2019s a Tranz-X Rad+ travel-adjustable dropper.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1065\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/06\/Giant-Trance-X-Advanced-E-Elite-1-lightweight-eMTB-9.jpg\" alt=\"Giant Trance X Advanced E+ Elite 1 lightweight eMTB\" class=\"wp-image-865944\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">While the one-piece bar and stem&#8217;s length and rise can be adjusted using spacers, its geometry won&#8217;t suit everyone. &#8211; a Minion DHF up front and a Dissector at the rear, both dual-compound EXO casing versions.<\/p><p>The size-large Giant Trance X Advanced E+ Elite 1 weighs 19.98kg without pedals.<\/p><\/div><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container\"><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-giant-trance-x-advanced-e-elite-1-ride-impressions\">Giant Trance X Advanced E+ Elite 1 ride impressions<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1067\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/06\/Giant-Trance-X-Advanced-E-Elite-1-lightweight-eMTB-5.jpg\" alt=\"Male rider in grey top riding the Giant Trance X Advanced E+ Elite 1 lightweight eMTB\" class=\"wp-image-865940\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">It was a blast to ride on flowier, less gnarly trails. &#8211; Andy Lloyd \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>I tested the Giant Trance X in Scotland\u2019s Tweed Valley, home to some of the world\u2019s best mountain biking. <\/p><p>Conditions ranged from freeze-dried dirt and dust through to mid-winter bogs, with a good measure of rain, snow and ice thrown in.<\/p><div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container\"><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-setup\">Setup<\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1065\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/06\/Giant-Trance-X-Advanced-E-Elite-1-lightweight-eMTB-8.jpg\" alt=\"Giant Trance X Advanced E+ Elite 1 lightweight eMTB\" class=\"wp-image-865943\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Dual-compound Maxxis tyres are not befitting of the bike&#8217;s \u00a39,500 asking price. &#8211; Andy Lloyd \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Setting up the Trance X was easy.<\/p><p>For my 74kg weight, I first set the fork\u2019s air spring to 95psi, installed three volume-reducer spacers and opened all the GRIP2 external damper adjustments. During testing, I decreased pressure to 85psi to improve small-bump performance, finishing with 17 per cent sag.<\/p><p>I initially inflated the rear shock\u2019s air spring to 230psi, but increased this during testing to 245psi to help balance the bike out. I fully opened the shock\u2019s external rebound and compression adjusters to help free up the dampers, and ended up with 21 per cent sag.<\/p><p>The skinny EXO-casing tyres needed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/workshop\/trail-tech-mountain-bike-tyre-pressure-all-you-need-to-know\">higher pressures<\/a> than usual to avoid excess carcass deformation (28psi front, 30psi rear), but this reduced grip significantly. <\/p><p>Balancing grip and carcass support with the firm-compound, lightweight tyres \u2013 that are more suited to human-powered lightweight trail bikes \u2013 proved tricky. This was exacerbated by the bike\u2019s 20kg weight.<\/p><\/div><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container\"><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-giant-trance-x-advanced-e-elite-1-climbing-performance\">Giant Trance X Advanced E+ Elite 1 climbing performance<\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1067\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/06\/Giant-Trance-X-Advanced-E-Elite-1-lightweight-eMTB-4.jpg\" alt=\"Male rider in grey top riding the Giant Trance X Advanced E+ Elite 1 lightweight eMTB\" class=\"wp-image-865939\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Despite the relatively weedy tyres, traction was good, helped by the rear suspension. &#8211; Andy Lloyd \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Despite the front end\u2019s relatively low stack height \u2013 625mm for the size large I tested \u2013 when seated, the bar feels tall.<\/p><p>This gives it a relaxed aura, taking most of your weight off your hands and focusing it on your sit bones. Front-wheel lift is limited and rear-wheel drive plentiful, despite the lacklustre tyre compound and racey Dissector tread pattern.<\/p><p>Giant\u2019s Maestro suspension is well-tuned. Inputs are easy to master; it\u2019s neither too sensitive, spinning the back wheel as soon as you push on the cranks, nor delayed, taking the wind out of your sails.<\/p><p>This gives it a premium feel, and clearly Giant has worked hard on the motor\u2019s tune.<\/p><p>True to the brand\u2019s claims, the Trance X sits in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-lightweight-electric-mountain-bikes\">SL eMTBs<\/a> category, and its motor\u2019s assistance can be toned right down to match the feel of lighter models.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1065\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/06\/Giant-Trance-X-Advanced-E-Elite-1-lightweight-eMTB-11.jpg\" alt=\"Giant Trance X Advanced E+ Elite 1 lightweight eMTB\" class=\"wp-image-865946\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Giant&#8217;s Ride Control Go smartphone app can be used to fine-tune each assistance mode. &#8211; Andy Lloyd \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Battery depletion, however, regardless of the motor\u2019s state of tune, is quick. In fact, using the Eco (30Nm, 75 per cent assistance) and Tour (50Nm, 125 per cent assistance) modes only, I managed a mere 900m of ascent spread over 21km before emptying the on-board battery.<\/p><p>The 200Wh range extender is a must-have, especially if you\u2019re planning on using higher assistance settings.<\/p><p>A large 36t chainring is limiting once the battery has run out; I struggled to climb up steeper or more technical sections without the motor\u2019s assistance. While it\u2019s hard to isolate any single component, the dual-compound EXO-casing Maxxis tyres lack the damping, grip and control found on tackier, chunkier models. These are hardly reflective of the Giant\u2019s \u00a39,000 asking price.<\/p><p>Ride through loose, angled rocks or slick roots, and the front and rear wheels deflect left and right. The tyres scrabble for grip, causing the bars to twitch left and right as you fight for control. With rubber simply too hard, the tyres can\u2019t deform around the trail\u2019s bumps to mute unwanted inputs.<\/p><p>But there\u2019s a level of stiffness in the front end, too. Whether it\u2019s the wheels, all-in-one cockpit or grips is tricky to define, but you may need to swap out those parts to improve comfort.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1067\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/06\/Giant-Trance-X-Advanced-E-Elite-1-lightweight-eMTB-3.jpg\" alt=\"Male rider in grey top riding the Giant Trance X Advanced E+ Elite 1 lightweight eMTB\" class=\"wp-image-865938\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A high front end and low-feeling bottom bracket help it corner well. &#8211; Andy Lloyd \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>All this is a shame when the Maestro suspension is so adept. It\u2019s smooth and composed on the choppiest, roughest terrain, doing its hardest to provide grip and control.<\/p><p>There\u2019s plenty of pep to its feel too; push the bike into the ground to pump or pop and it rewardingly bounds aloft or accelerates forwards. It\u2019s also amazing on the brakes; hammer on the anchors and the terrain remains muted while you come to a brilliantly quick stop.<\/p><p>Flatter, more undulating descents, where you have to work the bike to build and maintain speed, reveals an engaging and fun side to the Trance. The suspension tracks the ground wonderfully, and its balance isn\u2019t upset like it is on steeper descents.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1065\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/06\/Giant-Trance-X-Advanced-E-Elite-1-lightweight-eMTB-13.jpg\" alt=\"Giant Trance X Advanced E+ Elite 1 lightweight eMTB\" class=\"wp-image-865949\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">SRAM&#8217;s impressive GX Transmission is fitted. &#8211; Andy Lloyd \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Its low weight and high-power motor help too; you reach the assistance cut-off quickly but can power through it under your own steam.<\/p><p>Even though its geometry \u2013 for the most part \u2013 is pretty progressive, the head angle gives it a more traditional trail bike feel, getting to the edge quicker than it should.<\/p><p>Although a few shrewd upgrades (such as a better set of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-mountain-bike-tyres\">mountain bike tyres<\/a>) would unlock more performance, little can be done for the relatively steep head tube angle.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container\"><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-does-the-giant-trance-x-advanced-e-elite-1-compare-to-the-whyte-elyte-150-works\">How does the Giant Trance X Advanced E+ Elite 1 compare to the Whyte ELyte 150 Works?<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1066\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/05\/Whyte-E-Lyte-150-Works-lightweight-electric-mountain-bike-20.jpg\" alt=\"Pack shpt of the Whyte ELyte 150 Works full suspension mountain eBike\" class=\"wp-image-860875\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Whyte&#8217;s ELyte 150 Works shares a 150mm-travel Fox 36 fork with the Giant. &#8211; Laurence Crossman-Emms \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Neither the Giant nor the Whyte are embroiled in a suspension-travel arms race, both settling on an identical 150mm travel Fox 36 fork and 140mm (142mm for the Whyte) of squish out back.<\/p><p>Both also have punchy motors, but the Giant\u2019s full-power unit beats Bosch\u2019s SX on torque (85Nm vs 55Nm) and assistance (400 per cent vs 340 per cent), and doesn\u2019t need to be spun at high cadences to get the most from it. But, when set to equivalent outputs, the Bosch uses its battery power more frugally than the SyncDrive unit.<\/p><p>There\u2019s only 360g between each bike \u2013 the Giant weighing 19.98kg and the Whyte 19.62kg \u2013 and overall the specs are pretty similar.<\/p><p>But head towards gnarly terrain and a performance gulf appears; the Whyte is leaps and bounds ahead of the Giant in terms of feel. It\u2019s damped, muted and easy to control, and there\u2019s bucket loads of grip on tap. In fact, you\u2019d be forgiven for thinking it has quite a bit more travel than claimed.<\/p><p>A lot of this is down to the two bikes\u2019 geometry, particularly the 64-degree head tube angle. Even in the slackest setting (65.8 degrees), the Giant is nearly two full degrees steeper than the Whyte.<\/p><p>Speccing such a steep figure on a bike with a long reach, low bottom bracket and steep seat tube angle feels anomalous, and the proof is in the pudding out on the trails. Little can be done to tap into more performance and calm its handling.<\/p><p>If you\u2019re looking for a bike that\u2019s more capable on tougher terrain without any less pep in its step, the Whyte is the one to have.<\/p><p>If you need a full-power motor without the weight \u2013 and can deal with limited battery life \u2013 it\u2019s tricky to argue against the Giant, however.<\/p><div class=\"wp-block-group highlight-box is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container\"><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-emtb-bike-of-the-year-2024-how-we-tested\">eMTB Bike of the Year 2024 | How we tested<\/h3><p>This year\u2019s test is split between full-power and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-lightweight-electric-mountain-bikes\">lightweight electric mountain bikes<\/a>, to represent the ever-growing and diversifying segment.<\/p><p>The former will boast peak torque and power figures of over 80Nm and 680W, along with chunky 600Wh or bigger on-board batteries, culminating in a 24kg or higher weight figure. The latter are designed to hit 20kg or less, forgoing battery capacity (the biggest is 430Wh), torque and power (up to 50Nm and 600W).<\/p><p>These disparities show up on the trails; full-power models win uphill drag races and will generally go further on a single charge, but on the downhills lighter-weight SL bikes can feel more responsive.<\/p><p>This year\u2019s collection of test bikes flies the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/opinion\/spoke-tension-is-long-slack-and-low-geometry-always-better-our-tech-experts-give-us-their-angle\">long, low and slack geometry<\/a> flag for progressive figures.<\/p><p>Senior technical editor Alex Evans tested all eight <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-electric-mountain-bikes\">electric mountain bikes<\/a> on his home trails in Scotland\u2019s Tweed Valley, home to some of the UK\u2019s best trail centres, enduro tracks and downhill race runs.<\/p><p>The trails are world-class and varied, helping him push the bikes to their limits. A steeper than average head angle makes performance crumble further, culminating in a pingy and loose ride in rough and steep terrain.<\/p><p>If your local trails are relatively flowy, or you
