Power is provided by a bank of lithium-ion (Li-ion) cells. It shows useful information, including battery charge, current mode, speed, predicted range and cadence.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-motor\">Motor<\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2880\" height=\"1920\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2023\/09\/SRAM-Eagle-Powertrain-electric-mountain-bike-motor-5-dc6f324.jpg\" alt=\"SRAM Eagle Powertrain electric mountain bike motor\" class=\"wp-image-747252\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Mounted at the bottom bracket junction, the motor drives the chainring. &#8211; SRAM<\/figcaption><\/figure><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/electric-bike-motors\">eMTB motors<\/a> are also known as the drive unit. eMTBs generally use a \u2018mid-drive\u2019 system, where the motor is mounted at the junction of the down tube and seat tube. This lowers the bike&#8217;s centre of gravity, to improve handling and performance.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-emtb-jargon-explained\">eMTB jargon explained<\/h2><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-modes\">Modes<\/h3><p>Most motors feature selectable, often user-programmable and sometimes automatically controlled, support levels. These change the amount of power and torque supplied. \u2018Eco\u2019 mode generally provides the least support, while the \u2018Boost\u2019 or \u2018Turbo\u2019 setting unleashes full power.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-overrun\">Overrun<\/h3><p>Motor assistance usually continues for a short period after the rider stops pedalling. This is called overrun and can be useful on technical climbs, where you need to change your pedal-stroke timing to avoid ground strikes.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-peak-power\">Peak power<\/h3><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/electric-bike-laws\">UK and EU law limits e-bike motors<\/a> to 250W of continuous, standard power. Many manufacturers claim peak power higher than this, but this output is only in certain circumstances and for short periods. If a motor doesn\u2019t deliver as much power as expected, it may be because it has reached a 250W continuous peak and is \u2018throttling back\u2019 to avoid exceeding the limit.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-pedal-assist-pedalec\">Pedal-assist\/Pedalec<\/h3><p>These are terms that describe ebikes with motors that only provide assistance when the rider is pedalling \u2013 the only type of eMTB that can be legally used on UK trails.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-support-percentage\">Support percentage<\/h3><p>How much the motor augments a rider\u2019s pedalling inputs. A drive unit with 100 per cent support will essentially double the rider\u2019s power \u2013 so if they put out 50W, the motor will also provide 50W, amounting to an overall system power of 100W. Support percentages are directly related to motor peak power, and usually in the region of 300 to 400 per cent.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-torque\">Torque<\/h3><p>The amount of twisting or rotational force the motor provides. A higher torque value, given in Newton metres (Nm), will make the motor feel more powerful.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-walk-assist\">Walk assist<\/h3><p>A feature most ebikes have, where they\u2019re able to propel themselves at low speed without the rider pedalling, making it easier to push them up steep sections.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-watts-w\">Watts (W)<\/h3><p>The measurement of motor power.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-watt-hours-wh\">Watt hours (Wh)<\/h3><p>A standard measure of electricity, equivalent to the power consumption of one watt for one hour. This ensures there\u2019s a clear delineation between eMTBs, which can legally be ridden anywhere a regular \u2018pedal bike\u2019 can, and electric motorbikes.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-different-types-are-there\">What different types are there?<\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1067\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/05\/Specialized-Turbo-Kenevo-SL-2-Expert-lightweight-eMTB-5.jpg\" alt=\"Male rider in yellow top riding the Specialized Turbo Kenevo SL 2 Expert lightweight full suspension mountain electric bike - eMTB\" class=\"wp-image-863019\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Yes, this is an ebike! &#8211; Andy Lloyd \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Like mountain bikes in general, eMTBs differ in terms of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/the-ultimate-guide-to-bike-geometry-and-handling\">geometry<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/how-much-suspension-travel-do-i-need-on-my-mountain-bike\">suspension travel<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/mountain-bike-wheel-sizes-26in-650b-and-29in-explained\">wheel size<\/a> and parts fitted, with something to suit every riding style and most budgets. However, they can be divided into two main groups \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/lightweight-vs-full-fat-emtb\">\u2018full-power\u2019 and \u2018SL\u2019<\/a> (aka \u2018lightweight\u2019).\u00a0<\/p><p>As the name suggests, full-power electric mountain bikes supply maximum assistance to support your pedalling, courtesy of a motor with a peak output of 500W+ and at least 85Nm of torque. Many also come with a higher-capacity battery (600Wh+) to ensure a decent range. All this grunt has its drawbacks, though, in the form of extra weight.\u00a0<\/p><p>SL ebikes have less torque (50-60Nm) and, in many cases, a lighter, less powerful motor, combined with a smaller-capacity battery (320-500Wh). The idea is this gives a more natural ride feel and makes the bike easier to chuck around on the trail, especially when combined with lighter components. Many are compatible with optional range extenders in case you want to do the odd longer ride.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-are-the-advantages-over-a-regular-mtb\">What are the advantages over a regular MTB?<\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1067\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/05\/Propain-Ekano-2-CF-Ultimate-eMTB-22.jpg\" alt=\"male rider in orange top riding the Propain Ekano 2 CF Ultimate full suspension mountain eBike\" class=\"wp-image-862402\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">When the climbs get steep and technical, ebikes come into their own. &#8211; Scott Windsor \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Pedalling assistance can help riders with injuries, disabilities or health problems get out on the trails, or less fit riders keep up with sportier friends\/partners. <\/p><p>Because they\u2019re quicker up the climbs, eMTBs also enable you to cover more ground in less time, which is great for getting in quick laps, notching up plenty of descending or finishing long routes before darkness falls. They\u2019re also heavy \u2013 with full-power bikes often weighing upwards of 25kg and even top-end SL bikes starting from around 16kg. <\/p><p>If the motor and battery weight is low down and central in the frame, this doesn\u2019t have too much of an effect on the handling, and can even aid grip and stability on descents.
