As you\u2019d expect, it has a \u2018no expense spared\u2019 build, with flagship components and an ultra-lightweight (and extremely bling) custom paintjob.<\/p><p>It also has a set of tyres that could be the oldest piece of equipment being raced at this year\u2019s Tour.<\/p><p>Intrigued? Let\u2019s take a closer look.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-one-bike-to-rule-them-all\">One bike to rule them all<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Specialized S-Works Tarmac SL8 is as fast as an aero bike and as light as a climbing bike. &#8211; Simon von Bromley \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Specialized can arguably be credited with kick-starting the modern trend for all-rounder road racing bikes.<\/p><p>An evolution of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/news\/2021-specialized-tarmac\">Tarmac SL7<\/a> \u2013 that was intended to combine the low weight of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-climbing-bikes\">climbing bike<\/a> with the aerodynamic performance of an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-aero-road-bike\">aero road bike<\/a> \u2013 the Tarmac SL8 doubles down on this no-compromises approach.<\/p><p>According to Specialized, the SL8 gained from lessons learned during the development of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/bikes\/road-bikes\/specialized-s-works-aethos-dura-ace-di2-review\">S-Works Aethos<\/a>, the American brand\u2019s flyweight climber.<\/p><p>Taking inspiration from its tube shapes helped shave a claimed 115g from the frame, resulting in a feathery claimed frame weight of 685g for a painted size-56cm Tarmac SL8 frame.<\/p><p>For context, that\u2019s only 100g more than an equivalent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/news\/2021-specialized-s-works-aethos\">S-Works Aethos<\/a> frame, despite the Tarmac having (ostensibly) far superior aerodynamics.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/Remco-Evenepoel_Specialized-S-Works-Tarmac-SL8_20240626_SvB_A6300_BR_9696-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Remco Evenepoel's Specialized S-Works Tarmac SL8 for the 2024 Tour de France\" class=\"wp-image-872012\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The front end of the bike helps make the Tarmac SL8 more aerodynamic than the Venge, according to Specialized. &#8211; Simon von Bromley \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Despite this weight reduction, Specialized says the Tarmac SL8 is even more aerodynamic than the old <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/bikes\/road-bikes\/specialized-s-works-venge-sram-etap-review\">S-Works Venge<\/a>, its now defunct aero bike.<\/p><p>Specialized says this was achieved by remodelling the frame\u2019s leading edge (or the \u2018speed sniffer\u2019 as Specialized prefers to call it), narrowing the rear of the bike and adding a fully integrated cockpit up front.<\/p><p>It also claims the bottom bracket, head tube and fork have been stiffened up, resulting in a net stiffness-to-weight improvement of 33 per cent.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-liquid-metal-paint\">Liquid metal paint<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/Remco-Evenepoel_Specialized-S-Works-Tarmac-SL8_20240626_SvB_A6300_BR_9694-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Remco Evenepoel's Specialized S-Works Tarmac SL8 for the 2024 Tour de France\" class=\"wp-image-872010\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">You know you&#8217;re a star when you start getting signature paintjobs. &#8211; Simon von Bromley \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>According to Specialized, the \u2018liquid metal\u2019 chrome finish was achieved using a technique called \u2018Physical Vapour Deposition\u2019 (PVD), via which the frame and components are covered with vaporised metal inside a vacuum chamber.<\/p><p>As a result, Specialized has been able to paint both the frameset and components, such as the seatpost and handlebar, without adding <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/pro-bike\/andrew-feather-cannondale-supersix-evo\">excess weight traditionally associated with a bike\u2019s paintjob<\/a>.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/Remco-Evenepoel_Specialized-S-Works-Tarmac-SL8_20240626_SvB_A6300_BR_9708-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Remco Evenepoel's Specialized S-Works Tarmac SL8 for the 2024 Tour de France\" class=\"wp-image-872021\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Thanks to its low weight, the custom paint extends to the seatpost and cockpit. &#8211; He also appears to be wearing a set of unreleased S-Works shoes\u2026 &#8211; DAVID PINTENS\/BELGA MAG\/AFP via Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>All that said, though, it\u2019s possible that even the small amount of weight added by the \u2018liquid metal\u2019 paint was determined to be too much, because we spotted Evenepoel cresting the Galibier aboard a simpler, black and white Tarmac SL8 on stage 4.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-flagship-team-build-with-classic-tyres\">A flagship team build with classic tyres<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/Remco-Evenepoel_Specialized-S-Works-Tarmac-SL8_20240626_SvB_A6300_BR_9685-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Remco Evenepoel's Specialized S-Works Tarmac SL8 for the 2024 Tour de France\" class=\"wp-image-872003\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Remco Evenepoel&#8217;s Specialized S-Works Tarmac SL8 is equipped with 12-speed Shimano Dura-Ace. &#8211; Simon von Bromley \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Beyond the frameset, Evenepoel\u2019s bike is built up with a mostly team-issue spec.<\/p><p>That means a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/components\/groupsets\/groupset-road\/shimano-dura-ace-di2-r9200-review\">Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 R9200 groupset<\/a>, with Evenepoel opting for the new \u2018standard\u2019 54\/40t chainrings up front, paired with a wide, 11-34t cassette out back.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/Remco-Evenepoel_Specialized-S-Works-Tarmac-SL8_20240626_SvB_A6300_BR_9705-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Remco Evenepoel's Specialized S-Works Tarmac SL8 for the 2024 Tour de France\" class=\"wp-image-872019\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Evenepoel is using 165mm cranks. &#8211; Simon von Bromley \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The bike we photographed didn\u2019t have a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-power-meters\">power meter<\/a>, although Evenepoel has been using Shimano\u2019s FC-R9200-P dual-sided power meter throughout this year\u2019s race.<\/p><p>It did have short, 165mm cranks, though. At 1.71m tall, Evenepoel isn\u2019t <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/tallest-pro-cyclist\">the tallest rider in the Tour<\/a>, but many pro riders have moved to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/sizing-and-fit\/what-is-the-best-crank-length-for-cycling\">shorter cranks<\/a> in recent years.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"165mm Cranks - The Pro Tech Trend You Need To Follow\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/yo3lydbxktg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><p>The bike is also equipped with a direct-mount rear derailleur hanger, with a small section of inner tube helping to keep the Di2 wire tight to it.<\/p><p>According to Shimano, using a direct-mount rear derailleur hanger can help speed up wheel changes because it keeps the derailleur out of the way when the rear wheel is removed.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/Remco-Evenepoel_Specialized-S-Works-Tarmac-SL8_20240626_SvB_A6300_BR_9700-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Remco Evenepoel's Specialized S-Works Tarmac SL8 for the 2024 Tour de France\" class=\"wp-image-872014\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Wide 11-34t cassettes were a common sight at this year&#8217;s Grand Depart.<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Manufacturers of such hangers also typically claim their stout construction helps improve shifting accuracy due to their improved stiffness.<\/p><p>So far at this year\u2019s Tour, Evenepoel appears to have used the new Roval Rapide CLX II Team wheelset for every stage except the individual time trial (where he used a Roval Rapide CLX II Team front wheel paired with Roval\u2019s 321 Disc wheel at the rear).<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/Remco-Evenepoel_Specialized-S-Works-Tarmac-SL8_20240626_SvB_A6300_BR_9684-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Remco Evenepoel's Specialized S-Works Tarmac SL8 for the 2024 Tour de France\" class=\"wp-image-872001\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Remco Evenepoel seems to prefer the Rapide CLX II Team wheelset. &#8211; Simon von Bromley \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>An update to the highly rated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/components\/wheels\/wheel-sets\/roval-rapide-clx-ii-wheelset-review\">Roval Rapide CLX II wheelset<\/a>, the Rapide CLX II Team wheelset is claimed to weigh a feathery 1,390g \u2013 130g less than the old wheelset.<\/p><p>This is due to updates to the carbon layup in the rims, saving 80g, and new \u2018low flange\u2019 hubs, which cut another 50g.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/Remco-Evenepoel_Specialized-S-Works-Tarmac-SL8_20240626_SvB_A6300_BR_9699-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Remco Evenepoel's Specialized S-Works Tarmac SL8 for the 2024 Tour de France\" class=\"wp-image-872013\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Compared to the previous version, the Rapide CLX II Team wheels are lighter and slightly more aero. &#8211; Simon von Bromley \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>According to Specialized, the reason the hubs are silver is not to match Evenepoel\u2019s custom paintjob, but to save excess weight that would otherwise be added through powder coating and painting them.<\/p><p>While the rim profiles are the same as before, the new wheelset is claimed to be 0.5 watts more aerodynamic, thanks to its updated DT Swiss Aerolite II spokes and Roval LF hubs.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/Remco-Evenepoel_Specialized-S-Works-Tarmac-SL8_20240626_SvB_A6300_BR_9693-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Remco Evenepoel's Specialized S-Works Tarmac SL8 for the 2024 Tour de France\" class=\"wp-image-872009\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Silver hubs are lighter and they also look cool \u2013 it&#8217;s win, win. &#8211; Simon von Bromley \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>An improvement of 0.5 watts might not sound like much (because it isn\u2019t), but according to Specialized that can save a rider one second over 40km.<\/p><p>Again, one second over 40km isn\u2019t a great deal of time, but considering the 2024 Tour de France is a total of 3,498km, even the most marginal of gains can add up to something significant.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-oldest-tyres-in-the-peloton\">The oldest tyres in the peloton?<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/Remco-Evenepoel_Specialized-S-Works-Tarmac-SL8_20240626_SvB_A6300_BR_9692-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Remco Evenepoel's Specialized S-Works Tarmac SL8 for the 2024 Tour de France\" class=\"wp-image-872008\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Soudal Quick-Step and other Specialized-sponsored teams continue to use Turbo Cotton clincher tyres. &#8211; Simon von Bromley \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The Rapide CLX II Team wheelset also sticks with hooked rims (as opposed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/hookless-rims-road-tubeless\">hookless rims<\/a>), to retain compatibility with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-road-bike-tyres\">clincher tyres<\/a>.<\/p><p>This is useful because Evenepoel and many other Specialized-sponsored riders still prefer to use the brand\u2019s decade-old <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/components\/tyres\/specialized-s-works-turbo-cotton-tire-review\">Turbo Cotton clinchers<\/a>, instead of its more recently updated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/news\/2023-specialized-s-works-turbo-tyres\">S-Works Turbo tubeless tyres<\/a>.<\/p><p>The Turbo Cotton clincher was first raced at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/events\/tour-de-france\">Tour de France<\/a> almost 10 years ago to the day, when Tony Martin used them to win the individual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/fitness-and-training\/10-steps-to-your-best-ever-time-trial\">time trial<\/a> on stage 20 (which took place on 26 July 2014).<\/p><p>Evenepoel\u2019s tyres won\u2019t actually be 10 years old, of course, but it nevertheless seems odd that a design ostensibly so dated is still the pick of many of the top riders in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/pro-bike\/worldtour-bikes\">WorldTour<\/a>.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1706\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/GettyImages-452724138-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"PERIGUEUX, FRANCE - JULY 26: Tony Martin of Germany and the Omega Pharma - Quick-Step Cycling Team races to first place in the individual time trial during the twentieth stage of the 2014 Tour de France, a 54km individual time trial stage between Bergerac and Perigueux, on July 26, 2014 in Perigueux, France. (Photo by Doug Pensinger\/Getty Images)\" class=\"wp-image-872032\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Tony Martin was one of the pioneers of clinchers in the WorldTour and he rode the Turbo Cotton tyres to a TT win at the 2014 Tour de France. &#8211; Doug Pensinger\/Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>One possible explanation is that the combination of the Turbo Cotton tyres and Roval wheels is simply the fastest option available to the team.<\/p><p>When Specialized launched its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/news\/roval-rapide-alpinist-clx-wheelset\">first-generation, clincher-only Roval Rapide CLX wheels<\/a>,\u00a0back in 2020, it said the combination of those wheels and its Turbo Cotton tyres provided the best balance of aerodynamics, weight and rolling resistance, adding that the extra material (and therefore extra weight) required to make the rims tubeless-compatible would have outweighed the benefits of doing so.<\/p><p>Of course, that was then and this is now.<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/news\/roval-rapide-alpinist-clx-ii\">Roval\u2019s updated Rapide CLX II<\/a> and CLX II Team wheelsets are both tubeless-compatible (Specialized also admitted the original Rapide CLX wheels were intended to be tubeless-compatible, but that a rim failure during the latter stages of development led it to designate them as clincher-only).<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1067\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2023\/07\/Silverstone-CRR-Testing-Specialized-S-Works-Turbo-2BR-03-48eedc1.jpg\" alt=\"BikerRadar\/CyclingPlus Performance tyre group test @ Silverstone Sports Engineering Hub\" class=\"wp-image-742236\" style=\"width:840px;height:auto\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Specialized has put a lot of effort into its latest tubeless tyres, but its pro teams seem to prefer its cotton clinchers. &#8211; Gavin Roberts \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Specialized also refreshed its range of tubeless tyres in 2022, saying its latest flagship road tubeless tyre, the S-Works Turbo RapidAir 2BR, is \u201cworld-class in terms of its efficiency, handling and durability\u201d.<\/p><p>So why doesn\u2019t its sponsored professional teams use those instead, given most of the professional peloton has overwhelmingly adopted tubeless systems in recent years?
