{"id":66721,"date":"2024-07-12T18:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-07-12T16:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/afae4cb1-e8f3-4ef6-960d-d4ba305cb9e2"},"modified":"2024-07-12T18:25:27","modified_gmt":"2024-07-12T16:25:27","slug":"2024-tour-de-france-tech-trends-1x-on-the-galibier-new-aero-tech-waxed-chains-and-more","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/cyclingplus\/rss_feed\/2024-tour-de-france-tech-trends-1x-on-the-galibier-new-aero-tech-waxed-chains-and-more\/","title":{"rendered":"2024 Tour de France tech trends | 1x on the Galibier, new aero tech, waxed chains and more"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\">How tech is evolving at the most important bike race of the year <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Simon von Bromley\n      <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Friday, 12 July 2024 at 16:00 PM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>The 2024 Tour de France is in full swing, with the battle raging for stages and jerseys.<\/p><p>As with previous years, we packed our notepads and cameras, and headed out to the Grand Depart to tour team hotels looking for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/pro-bike\">hottest pro bikes<\/a> and latest tech trends.<\/p><p>Just as with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/pro-bike\/tour-de-france-2023-tech-trends\">last year\u2019s race<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/events\/tour-de-france\">2024 Tour de France<\/a> has already thrown up several notable tech trends during its first two weeks.<\/p><p>We&#8217;ve seen 1x drivetrains on the Galibier, ever chunkier tyres, new aero bikes and tech, waxed chains and more.<\/p><p>So, let\u2019s dive into the key tech trends shaping the racing at the 2024 Tour.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-spotify wp-block-embed-spotify wp-embed-aspect-21-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe title=\"Spotify Embed: 1x on the Galibier, Pog\u2019s supersize tyres and Cav\u2019s record-breaking setup | 2024 Tour de France tech trends\" style=\"border-radius: 12px\" width=\"100%\" height=\"152\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\" allow=\"autoplay; Dario Belingheri\/Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>At last year\u2019s Tour, much (digital) ink was spilled about defending champion <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/tech\/why-was-1x-used-2023-tour-de-france\">Jonas Vingegaard\u2019s use of a 1x drivetrain for the Tour\u2019s hilly opening stage<\/a>.<\/p><p>At this year\u2019s Tour, though, Vingegaard opted for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/1x-drivetrains\">1x drivetrain<\/a> to race over the Galibier \u2013 one of the most fearsome climbs in the French Alps \u2013 on stage 4, and barely anyone batted an eyelid.<\/p><p>From the limited images available, it&#8217;s hard to decipher exactly what gears Vingegaard used.\u00a0<\/p><p>Supposing he had a 50t chainring paired with a 10-36t cassette at the rear, though, that would have provided him with a similar spread of gears to a 55\/40 double crankset with an 11-29t cassette.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/Trek-Madone-SLR_20240627_SvB_A6300_BR_9832-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"1x SRAM Red AXS drivetrain on a Trek Madone SLR for the 2024 Tour de France\" class=\"wp-image-872360\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Vingegaard used a 1x SRAM Red AXS drivetrain (pictured here on a Lidl-Trek team bike) to climb one of the Tour&#8217;s most legendary mountains. &#8211; Simon von Bromley \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>A bit like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/road-disc-brakes-everything-you-need-to-know\">road disc brakes<\/a>, perhaps 1x has finally been accepted as just another valid way to optimise a rider\u2019s setup.<\/p><p>With the latest 12-speed drivetrains, particularly those with a 10t sprocket at the rear, though, there\u2019s far less of a compromise \u2013 especially when the top riders are climbing so fast that smaller gear ratios clearly aren\u2019t required beyond the most extreme gradients.<\/p><p>The critical distinction may be that bike and component manufacturers are no longer trying to push an all-or-nothing approach to 1x drivetrains, as has happened previously.<\/p><p>When <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/opinion\/disc-brakes-default-no-one-cares\">3T sponsored the Aqua Blue Sport team<\/a> for the 2017 and 2018 seasons, for example, the team\u2019s road bike \u2013 the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/bikes\/road-bikes\/3t-strada-first-ride-review\">original 3T Strada<\/a> \u2013 didn\u2019t even include the option to mount a front derailleur.<\/p><p>As a result, its riders were effectively forced into using 11-speed 1x drivetrains for all races, whether they liked it or not. Unsurprisingly, when the results didn\u2019t come, many were quick to point the finger at their bike setups.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/Jonas-Vingegaard_Cervelo-R5_20240628_SvB_A6300_BR_0263-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Jonas Vingegaard's Cervelo R5 for the 2024 Tour de France\" class=\"wp-image-871329\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Because he gets a free choice, Jonas Vingegaard has been switching between 1x and 2x setups throughout this year&#8217;s race. &#8211; Simon von Bromley \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>In July 2018, 3T relented and released the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/news\/3t-breaks-its-tradition-with-strada-due\">Strada Due<\/a> (which has since been superseded by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/bikes\/road-bikes\/3t-strada-icr-force-etap-axs-2x12-review\">Strada ICR<\/a>), but the damage to 1x\u2019s reputation for road racing had already been done and the team folded before it had a chance to try the new bike.<\/p><p>Nowadays, all riders using 1x are \u2013 ostensibly \u2013 doing so by choice, and it&#8217;s hard to argue with the tech choices of the riders and team that won all three Grand Tours last season.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-new-aero-bikes\">New aero bikes<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/Alexander-Kristof_Dare-VA-AFO_20240627_SvB_A6300_BR_9900-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Alexander Kristof's Dare Velocity Ace for the 2024 Tour de France\" class=\"wp-image-870516\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Does Dare&#8217;s new Velocity Ace mark the return of the aero road bike? &#8211; Simon von Bromley \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>While all-rounder road bikes continue to dominate in the Tour peloton, the enduring influence of aerodynamics on professional cycling can\u2019t be overlooked.<\/p><p>One bike brand that\u2019s bucking trends and leaning fully into the low-drag philosophy is Dare, with its new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/news\/alexander-kristof-dare-velocity-ace\">hyper-aero Velocity Ace<\/a>.<\/p><p>Although the bike has yet to be officially announced, Alexander Kristoff and his Uno-X teammates have been riding the new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-aero-road-bike\">aero road bike<\/a> throughout this year\u2019s Tour after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/news\/eurobike-day-3-roundup\">it was also teased at Eurobike<\/a>.<\/p><p>With its deep tube shapes and aggressive wing-shaped handlebar, it could easily pass for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/time-trial-bikes\">time trial bike<\/a> if adorned with a set of triathlon bars.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/Alexander-Kristof_Dare-VA-AFO_20240627_SvB_A6300_BR_9908-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Head tube close-up on Alexander Kristof's Dare Velocity Ace\" class=\"wp-image-870523\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Tubes this deep are typically reserved for time trial bikes. &#8211; Simon von Bromley \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/news\/van-rysel-fcr-spotted\">Van Rysel also surprised us with a new FCR aero road bike<\/a>. Although the Decathlon\u2013AG2R La Mondiale mechanics wouldn\u2019t let us photograph it up close at their team hotel in Florence, we were nevertheless able to piece together the key details from afar \u2013 and from images taken during the opening stages of the race.<\/p><p>If <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/pro-bike\/first-look-decathlon-returns-to-worldtour-with-budget-superbikes\">Van Rysel\u2019s existing RCR Pro<\/a> takes inspiration from a lightweight aero all-rounder such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/bikes\/road-bikes\/specialized-s-works-tarmac-sl7-review\">Specialized S-Works Tarmac SL7<\/a>, the FCR is more in the vein of a dedicated aero road bike such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/bikes\/road-bikes\/cannondale-systemsix-hi-mod-etap-axs-review\">Cannondale SystemSix Hi-Mod<\/a> or defunct <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/bikes\/road-bikes\/specialized-s-works-venge-sram-etap-review\">Specialized S-Works Venge<\/a>.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1001\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/Van-Rysel-FCR_BikeRadar_2024-Tour-de-France.jpg\" alt=\"Van Rysel FCR aero road bike at the 2024 Tour de France\" class=\"wp-image-872365\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Van Rysel has also teased a proper aero road bike at this year&#8217;s race. &#8211; Kai Eves \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Deeper truncated aerofoil tube shapes feature heavily throughout the bike, with a greater effort made to integrate the top of the fork crown with the rest of the frame.<\/p><p>As with the RCR Pro, the FCR appears to use a Deda integrated cockpit. However, it could be a new, more aerodynamic design than the one the RCR Pro uses because the deep headset spacers suggest efforts have been made to further optimise this area.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-new-aero-kit\">New aero kit<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/Carlos-Verona_Trek-Madone-SLR_20240627_SvB_A6300_BR_9799-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Carlos Verona's Trek Madone SLR for the 2024 Tour de France\" class=\"wp-image-872368\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Aero bottles may be a little less practical, but some riders can&#8217;t resist the gains. &#8211; Simon von Bromley \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Beyond those new bikes, other teams have been looking for clever ways to optimise their drag in other ways.<\/p><p>While they may be less practical than round bottles, Lidl-Trek riders have been using the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/news\/2025-trek-madone\">Trek Madone SLR\u2019s<\/a> new aero water bottles.<\/p><p>Likewise, Mark Cavendish used Tacx aero bottles to take an historic 35th stage win on stage 5.<\/p><p>For an in-depth look at his record-breaking bike setup, you can check out our in-depth feature on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/pro-bike\/2024-tour-de-france-mark-cavendish-wilier-filante-slr\">Cavendish\u2019s custom-painted Wilier Filante SLR<\/a>. Priced at \u20ac205 per rotor, and weighing a claimed 75g (140mm), these use a structural carbon fibre carrier for a smoother transition between the mounting point and the braking surface.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"668\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/CarbonTi_x-rotor_aero_140_front.jpg\" alt=\"CarbonTi X-Rotor Aero front disc brake rotor\" class=\"wp-image-872381\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Carbon-Ti has supplied UAE Team Emirates with its new X-Rotor Aero disc brake rotors for use in TTs. &#8211; CarbonTi<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Carbon-Ti doesn\u2019t offer any figures to show how much drag they could save compared to a set of standard brake rotors.<\/p><p>Newcastle-based brand Evolve Aero says its Aeroto aerodynamic disc rotor covers (\u00a379 per cover) offer \u201cpotential savings of 0.5 to 2 watts\u201d when fitted to a front wheel, though, so the gains from the Carbon-Ti rotors could be similar.<\/p><p>Evolve Aero notes results will vary from wheel to wheel and from bike to bike, though.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/GettyImages-2160731737-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"GEVREY-CHAMBERTIN, FRANCE - JULY 05: Tim Wellens of Belgium and UAE Team Emirates sprints during the 111th Tour de France 2024, Stage 7 a 25.3km individual time trial stage from Nuits-Saint-Georges to Gevrey-Chambertin \/ #UCIWT \/ on July 05, 2024 in Gevrey-Chambertin, France. According to the brand, it uses a super-deep hookless rim design that&#8217;s intended to offer class-leading aerodynamic performance at a lower weight than previously possible.<\/p><p>Although Poga\u010dar opted against using it for the TT on stage 7 (Poga\u010dar instead used an AeroCoach Aeox Titan front wheel paired with an AeroCoach Aeox Orbit disc at the rear), his teammate, Tim Wellens went with it.<\/p><p>Could he have been gathering race data on the new wheel ahead of the Tour\u2019s crucial final time trial on stage 21?<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2478\" height=\"1652\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/Continental-Aero-111-tyre_.jpg\" alt=\"Continental Aero 111 front tyre on Swiss Side rim\" class=\"wp-image-872369\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Continental&#8217;s new Aero 111 front tyre has a tread pattern designed to reduce drag. &#8211; George Scott \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Just when you thought no aero stone had been left unturned, Continental announced itself as the latest brand to produce an aerodynamic tyre.<\/p><p>Developed in collaboration with Swiss Side and DT Swiss, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/news\/continental-aero-111-front-tyre\">Aero 111 front tyre<\/a> is based on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/continental-grand-prix-5000-s-tr-review\">Conti\u2019s standard GP5000 S TR<\/a> tyre but uses a patented tread pattern designed to reduce drag and improve performance with deep-section rims.<\/p><p>Tread patterns on road tyres may seem slightly trivial in the grand scheme of things, but Swiss Side\u2019s aero data promises some impressive gains, especially at higher yaw angles.<\/p><p>With <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/news\/schwalbe-pro-one-aero\">Schwalbe<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/news\/enve-ses-tubeless-tyres\">ENVE<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cadex-cycling.com\/gb\/cadex-aero-tubeless\">Cadex<\/a> and now Continental all producing \u2018aero\u2019 tyres, we think it\u2019s time to rubber stamp this one as an official trend.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-ever-chunkier-tubeless-tyres-and-a-novel-new-size\">Ever chunkier tubeless tyres and a novel new size<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/Carlos-Verona_Trek-Madone-SLR_20240627_SvB_A6300_BR_9798-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Pirelli P-Zero Race TLR RS on Carlos Verona's Trek Madone SLR for the 2024 Tour de France\" class=\"wp-image-872371\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Carlos Verona&#8217;s Trek Madone SLR had the new Pirelli P Zero Race TLR RS tyres set up tubeless. &#8211; Simon von Bromley \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Talking of tyres, there have been developments in sizes too.<\/p><p>While 700x28c was again the most common size we saw at the 2024 Grand Depart, the average measured width continues to grow, perhaps as wheel manufacturers develop <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/rim-width-explained-for-road-bikes-mountain-bikes-and-gravel-bikes\">wider rims<\/a>.<\/p><p>The 28c <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/news\/pirelli-p-zero-race-tlr-rs\">P Zero Race TLR RS tyres<\/a> on Carlos Verona\u2019s (Lidl-Trek) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/news\/bontrager-aeolus-rsl-51-62-75\">Bontrager Aeolus RSL 51<\/a> rims measured up at 30mm wide, for example, while Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers) had a set of special-edition 28c GP5000 S TR tyres (with stealth logos) that measured 30.2mm-wide on his Shimano Dura-Ace C50 rims.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/Geraint-Thomas_Pinarello-Dogma-F_20240627_SvB_A6300_BR_9873-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Geraint Thomas' Pinarello Dogma F for the 2024 Tour de France\" class=\"wp-image-872174\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Geraint Thomas&#8217; bike was equipped with special &#8216;stealth&#8217; Continental GP5000 S TR tyres. &#8211; Simon von Bromley \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Cavendish also stuck to 28c <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/components\/tyres\/road-bike-tyres\/vittoria-corsa-pro-tlr-tyre-review\">Vittoria Corsa Pro TLR tyres<\/a> on his Vision Metron 60 SL wheels, although some of his larger teammates opted for 30c tyres.<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/pro-bike\/tour-de-france-tyre-tech\">Just like last year<\/a>, Tadej Poga\u010dar had the widest tyres of the bunch. This year, though, he had a set of Continental GP5000 S TRs so wide they\u2019d raise eyebrows at a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-cyclocross-bikes\">cyclocross<\/a> race.<\/p><p>Using a set of 30c tyres on ENVE SES 4.5 rims, they measured up at 32.5mm-wide at the rear and a whopping 33.3mm at the front.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2400\" height=\"1600\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/Tadej-Pogacar_Tyre-sizes_2024-Tour-de-France.jpg\" alt=\"Tadej Poga\u010dar's tyre sizes at the Grand Depart of the 2024 Tour de France\" class=\"wp-image-872372\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Tadej Poga\u010dar&#8217;s tyres were the biggest we saw at this year&#8217;s Tour, by a large margin. &#8211; Kai Eves \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Do these XL slicks explain how Poga\u010dar was able to take time out on all of his rivals by descending the Galbier at rapid pace on stage 4? Probably not, but they can\u2019t have hurt his confidence either.<\/p><p>Vingegaard\u2019s bike was also equipped with wider tyres than at last year\u2019s Tour. When we saw his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/pro-bike\/vingegaard-cervelo-s5-versus-pogacar-colnago-v4rs\">Cerv\u00e9lo S5 at the Grand Depart in Bilbao<\/a>, it was specced with 24.4mm Vittoria Corsa Pro tubulars.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/Jonas-Vingegaard_Cervelo-R5_20240628_SvB_A6300_BR_0280-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Jonas Vingegaard's Cervelo R5 for the 2024 Tour de France\" class=\"wp-image-871370\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Vingegaard seems to be all-in on tubeless this year. &#8211; Simon von Bromley \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>This year, we saw his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/bikes\/road-bikes\/cervelo-r5-disc-force-etap-axs-review\">Cerv\u00e9lo R5<\/a> in Florence with 29c Vittoria Corsa Pro TLR tyres set up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/tubeless\">tubeless<\/a>, measuring 29.7mm-wide.<\/p><p>That Vingegaard\u2019s tyres have grown more than 5mm in width in a year is perhaps less notable than the fact he\u2019s using 29c tyres in the first place \u2013 because it&#8217;s a size we weren\u2019t aware even existed.<\/p><p>According to the text on the tyre, the 29c tyres are specifically for 25mm-wide rims.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2255\" height=\"1503\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/Jonas-Vingegaard_Cervelo-R5_20240628_SvB_A6300_BR_0266-1-edited.jpg\" alt=\"Jonas Vingegaard's Cervelo R5 for the 2024 Tour de France\" class=\"wp-image-872373\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">According to the labels, Vingegaard&#8217;s Vittoria tyres are 700x29c for 25mm-wide rims.<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>We suspect these may have been created in response to the UCI\u2019s recent directive that teams must follow the latest guidelines from the ETRTO and ISO \u2013 two international standards organisations.<\/p><p>Put in the spotlight by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/tech\/de-gendt-uae-tour-crash-are-hookless-rims-safe\">Thomas De Gendt\u2019s crash at the UAE Tour<\/a> earlier this year, the most up-to-date guidelines state the minimum tyre size for 25mm-wide rims is 29c (where it had previously been 28c).<\/p><p>Having a 29c option, then, might help teams avoid sizing up to marginally heavier and less aerodynamic 30c tyres.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-waxed-chains-gain-traction\">Waxed chains gain traction<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/Jonas-Vingegaard_Cervelo-R5_20240628_SvB_A6300_BR_0289-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Waxed SRAM Red AXS chain on Jonas Vingegaard's Cervelo R5 for the 2024 Tour de France\" class=\"wp-image-871379\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Jonas Vingegaard&#8217;s Visma-Lease a Bike team is running waxed chains at this year&#8217;s Tour. &#8211; Simon von Bromley \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>With teams always on the lookout for marginal gains, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/chain-lubes\">chain lubricants<\/a> have become a bigger focus in recent years.<\/p><p>With brands such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/brand\/ceramicspeed\">CeramicSpeed<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/news\/silca-finish-line-chain-waxing\">Silca<\/a> touting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/workshop\/how-to-wax-a-chain\">waxed chains<\/a> as the new gold standard for efficiency and cleanliness, we might assume every team in the WorldTour has simply switched to that approach.<\/p><p>The reality is different, though \u2013 some teams have and some haven\u2019t.<\/p><p>Ineos Grenadiers \u2013 the team that popularised the concept of \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/from-pillows-to-pinarellos-inside-team-skys-marginal-gains-world\">marginal gains<\/a>\u2019 in the modern era \u2013 doesn\u2019t use waxed chains, for example, instead relying on more traditional, oil-based lubricants.<\/p><p>Having mentioned this in one of our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@bikeradar\">YouTube videos<\/a> from the Grand Depart, during a feature on Geraint Thomas\u2019 new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/news\/new-2025-pinarello-dogma-f\">Pinarello Dogma F<\/a>, it prompted a surprising amount of consternation in the comments from our viewers.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"NEWEST Bikes Of The Tour de France 2024\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/viMABR1fvgg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><p>The common thread seemed to be many felt it was unfathomable that one of the top teams in the sport wouldn\u2019t put the extra effort in, for what many consider to be a proven performance advantage.<\/p><p>We\u2019re going to explore this further in an in-depth feature coming soon, but the long and short of it is that running immersively waxed chains at the Tour is a big logistical hurdle.<\/p><p>Team mechanics have dozens of bikes to clean and maintain every day, and that typically involves using pressure washers and solvents to speed up the job \u2013 two things that are incompatible with waxed chains.<\/p><p>Mechanics could take the chain off every bike before cleaning it and then install a freshly waxed chain afterwards.<\/p><p>That requires additional time and resources, though, and brings risks in terms of mistakes being made during installation or inconsistencies in shifting between chains.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/Remco-Evenepoel_Specialized-S-Works-Tarmac-SL8_20240626_SvB_A6300_BR_9712-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Remco Evenepoel's Specialized S-Works Tarmac SL8 for the 2024 Tour de France\" class=\"wp-image-872024\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The mechanics are some of the hardest-working people in the sport and even the richest teams don&#8217;t have unlimited time and resources. &#8211; Simon von Bromley \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>It\u2019s also worth remembering a freshly waxed chain needs to be run in for a few kilometres before it reaches peak performance.<\/p><p>Logistics aside, many teams have sponsorship arrangements that tie them into using certain lubricants. Ineos is sponsored by Muc-Off, for example, which doesn&#8217;t make waxed-based lubricants.<\/p><p>As we\u2019ve pointed out before, the pros don\u2019t always get the best of everything \u2013 there\u2019s plenty of great <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/tech\/road-tech-the-pros-cant-have-but-you-can\">tech the pros can\u2019t have, but you can<\/a>.<\/p><p>Pro teams sometimes use non-sponsor-correct equipment, but doing so always risks souring commercial relationships and \u2013 ultimately \u2013 can hurt teams more in the long run.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/Tour-de-France-2024_Cyclowax_-8-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Waxed chains at the Lidl-Trek team trucks, at the 2024 Tour de France\" class=\"wp-image-870118\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Lidl-Trek has partnered with Cyclowax for this year&#8217;s Tour, with the Belgian brand providing the team with both equipment and expertise. &#8211; George Scott \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Of course, that\u2019s not to say it can\u2019t be done.<\/p><p>Visma-Lease a Bike is all-in on waxed chains for this Tour, for example, as is Lidl-Trek \u2013 the latter partly in thanks to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/news\/cyclowax-prototype-automatic-chain-waxing-machine\">prototype automatic chain waxing machine<\/a> made by Belgian brand, Cyclowax.<\/p><p>Poga\u010dar\u2019s UAE Team Emirates also uses AbsoluteBlack\u2019s GraphenLube, which is available in drip-on or hot-melt form.<\/p><p>However, the realities of life on the road at the Tour make it a trickier process than many realise.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-strade-bianche-setups-for-the-gravel-stage\">Strade Bianche setups for the gravel stage<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/Stephen-Williams_Factor-Ostro-VAM_20240626_SvB_A6300_BR_9749-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Stephen Williams' Factor Ostro VAM for the 2024 Tour de France\" class=\"wp-image-872374\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Israel-Premier Tech riders rode stage 9 aboard their team-issue Factor Ostro VAMs (pictured here at the Grand Depart). &#8211; Simon von Bromley \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The gravel roads of stage 9 created exciting racing that shook up the formula and got everyone talking.<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/tech\/2024-tour-de-france-tech-predictions\">As predicted<\/a>, though, we didn\u2019t see any dedicated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-gravel-bikes\">gravel bikes<\/a> being used.<\/p><p>Even Israel-Premier Tech, which used <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/news\/2024-paris-roubaix-factor-ostro-gravel\">Factor\u2019s Ostro Gravel at this year\u2019s Paris-Roubaix<\/a>, rode its \u2018standard\u2019 aero road bike \u2013 the new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/news\/factor-ostro-vam-2024\">Factor Ostro VAM<\/a>.<\/p><p>Ultimately, the gravel sectors bore a strong resemblance to those found in one of cycling\u2019s most popular races, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/long-reads\/gran-fondo-strade-bianche\">Strade Bianche<\/a>, and dedicated gravel bikes simply weren\u2019t required.<\/p><p>Instead, practically everyone used their standard road bike with chunkier-than-normal tyres.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1706\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/GettyImages-2161036873-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"TROYES, FRANCE - JULY 07: (L-R) Juan Ayuso of Spain, Joao Almeida of Portugal and UAE Team Emirates and Remco Evenepoel of Belgium and Team Soudal Quick-Step - White Best Young Rider Jersey compete passing through a gravel strokes sector during the 111th Tour de France 2024, Stage 9 a 199km stage from Troyes to Troyes \/ #UCIWT \/ on July 07, 2024 in Troyes, France. (Photo by Tim de Waele\/Getty Images)\" class=\"wp-image-872387\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Remco Evenepoel swapped to larger tubeless tyres for the gravel stage. &#8211; Tim de Waele\/Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Specialized-sponsored teams also played things safe by swapping from their Turbo Cotton clincher tyres (which we covered in our recent look at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/pro-bike\/remco-evenepoel-specialized-s-works-tarmac-sl8-tour-de-france-2024\">Remco Evenepoel\u2019s custom Specialized S-Works Tarmac SL8<\/a>) to tubeless models \u2013 most likely either the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/components\/tyres\/road-bike-tyres\/specialized-s-works-turbo-2br-review\">S-Works Turbo 2BR<\/a> or the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/news\/2023-specialized-s-works-mondo\">S-Works Mondo 2BR<\/a>.<\/p><p>This was an understandable switch because the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/which-tubeless-sealant-works-the-best\">tubeless sealant<\/a> used to keep the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/tubeless\">tubeless systems<\/a> airtight also provides a bit of extra protection against small punctures.<\/p><p>Tubeless tyres can also be run with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-tubeless-tyre-inserts\">tubeless tyre inserts<\/a>, offering additional protection against rim damage, and a run-flat solution that enables riders to keep riding until they can get a wheel or bike change.<\/p><p>We don\u2019t know which (if any) teams used inserts, of course, and clearly tubeless sealant can\u2019t prevent all punctures, but such mitigations likely helped many riders during the stage, even if they went unnoticed. (Photo by Bernard Papon - Pool\/Getty Images)\" class=\"wp-image-872386\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Vingegaard and his Visma-Lease a Bike team rode the stage defensively and avoided losing any time. &#8211; Bernard Papon &#8211; Pool\/Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Bike tech aside, we also predicted that \u201cmost of the teams\u2019 prep will be put into strategising for quick wheel changes and\/or bike swaps in the event of inevitable punctures\u201d, and Visma-Lease a Bike showed it had done just that.<\/p><p>The team had clearly learned lessons from the chaos on stage 5 of the 2022 Tour de France, from Lille to Arenberg. After dropping his chain, Vingegaard first swapped bikes with Nathan Van Hooydonck \u2013 a rider almost 20cm taller than him \u2013 before quickly realising van Hooydonck\u2019s bike was far too big for him.<\/p><p>Panicking, Vingegaard almost took the bike of another teammate, before his team car finally arrived to give him one of his own. A frenzied chase back to the bunch ensued and while Vingegaard ultimately limited his losses on that stage, the whole ordeal undoubtedly caused him stress and cost him energy.<\/p><p>This time, when Vingegaard suffered a mechanical, he promptly swapped onto the bike of his similarly sized teammate, Jan Tratnik, and rode the rest of the stage on that.<\/p><p>For all the focus on bike tech and marginal gains, it clearly showed that keeping calm and making the right decision in the heat of the moment usually makes an even greater difference.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-looking-forward\">Looking forward<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/Jonas-Vingegaard_Cervelo-R5_20240628_SvB_A6300_BR_0259-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Jonas Vingegaard's Cervelo R5 for the 2024 Tour de France\" class=\"wp-image-871078\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Expect to see riders on their lightest setups as the race heads into the mountains. &#8211; Simon von Bromley \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>From here on, it\u2019s mostly mountain stages all the way to Nice.<\/p><p>That means we\u2019ll likely see riders optimising their setups for the lowest possible weight over the coming days \u2013 trying to get as close as possible to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/tech\/should-the-uci-bike-weight-limit-be-changed\">UCI\u2019s minimum bike weight limit<\/a> of 6.8kg.<\/p><p>Once the race reaches the South coast of France, though, it\u2019s worth remembering there\u2019s no processional final stage to Paris this year.<\/p><p>Instead, fans will be treated to an individual time trial, taking the riders from Monaco to Nice, via the surrounding hills.<\/p><p>The route includes the ascent of a category 2 climb, with a length of 8.1km and an average gradient of 5.7 per cent, followed by a descent of the Col d\u2019\u00e9ze.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"849\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/Tour-de-France-2024_Stage-21_Map.jpeg\" alt=\"Tour de France 2024 Stage 21 course map\" class=\"wp-image-872375\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The TT on the final day could be the most interesting stage, from a tech point of view. &#8211; ASO<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Given most <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/time-trial-bikes\">time trial bikes<\/a> are designed around speed on flat and rolling courses, though, this poses a number of interesting tech dilemmas for riders.<\/p><p>The climbing starts almost out of the gate, so could riders use a road bike for the climb before switching to a time trial bike for the rest of the stage?<\/p><p>At last year\u2019s Tour, for example, Poga\u010dar opted to swap from his TT bike to his road bike for the final climb during the individual time trial on stage 16. In contrast, Vingegaard stayed on his TT bike for the entire course (and ultimately won the stage by more than a minute and a half).<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"720\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/Tour-de-France-2024_Stage-21_Profile.jpeg\" alt=\"Tour de France 2024 Stage 21 course profile\" class=\"wp-image-872376\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Stage 21&#8217;s parcours poses a number of dilemmas for riders in terms of what equipment to use. &#8211; ASO<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Of course, the best teams will have done reconnaissance rides on the course and analysed possible race scenarios.<\/p><p>Given swapping bikes costs valuable seconds, though, we suspect the top riders will make every effort to get their TT bikes as light as possible and ride those for the whole stage.<\/p><p>This is because the aerodynamic advantage offered by dedicated time trial bikes, mostly due to the riding position they enable riders to adopt, is so great it usually makes carrying the additional weight a worthwhile compromise.<\/p><p>As always, though, we\u2019ll have to wait and see.
