{"id":67114,"date":"2024-07-18T18:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-07-18T16:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/8b37d2b0-bb6d-478d-a913-953485820653"},"modified":"2024-07-18T18:25:29","modified_gmt":"2024-07-18T16:25:29","slug":"how-much-do-tour-de-france-bikes-weigh-in-2024-9-tour-bikes-weighed-and-analysed","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/cyclingplus\/rss_feed\/how-much-do-tour-de-france-bikes-weigh-in-2024-9-tour-bikes-weighed-and-analysed\/","title":{"rendered":"How much do Tour de France bikes weigh in 2024? 9 Tour bikes weighed and analysed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\">All-rounders dominate again, but one team tries a different tactic\u00a0 <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Oscar Huckle\n      <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Thursday, 18 July 2024 at 16:00 PM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>The 2024 Tour de France is well under way and, from a tech perspective, it&#8217;s a showcase of the cr\u00e8me de la cr\u00e8me.\u00a0<\/p><p>With the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/tech\/should-the-uci-bike-weight-limit-be-changed\">UCI minimum bike weight limit of 6.8kg<\/a>, you might assume most, if not all, of the bikes are going to weigh as close to that figure as possible.\u00a0<\/p><p>But the reality is more nuanced than that.\u00a0<\/p><p>The days of dedicated lightweight <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-climbing-bikes\">climbing bikes<\/a> and heavy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-aero-road-bike\">aero road bikes<\/a> seem to be dwindling, with many brands going down the route of having a single all-rounder race bike that&#8217;s designed to be both light and aero.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">We&#8217;re in the age of the all-rounder bike. &#8211; Simon von Bromley \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/pro-bike\/2023-tour-de-france-bike-weights\">This was particularly evident in 2023 <\/a>when the average weight of the bikes we put on the BikeRadar Scales of Truth was 7.451kg.\u00a0<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/news\/2022-tour-de-france-bike-weights\">In 2022<\/a>, when specific aero models were more abundant, that figure was 7.92kg.\u00a0<\/p><p>So, how much does the average Tour de France bike weigh in 2024? We got our hands on nine <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/pro-bike\">pro bikes<\/a> and put them on the good ole\u2019 BikeRadar Scales of Truth.\u00a0<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-some-caveats\">Some caveats\u2026<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/Tadej-Pogacar_Colnago-V4Rs_20240628_SvB_A6300_BR_0111-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Shimano Dura-Ace R9100 pedals on Tadej Poga\u010dar's Colnago V4Rs for the 2024 Tour de France\" class=\"wp-image-871318\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">These weights include accessories. &#8211; Simon von Bromley \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>As with our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/news\/2022-tour-de-france-bike-weights\">2022<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/pro-bike\/2023-tour-de-france-bike-weights\">2023 Tour de France bike weights<\/a> analyses, it\u2019s worth reiterating the usual caveats.<\/p><p>The bikes we weighed were all at the Grand D\u00e9part in Florence, Italy, where the final builds would have been optimised for this year\u2019s first stage.<\/p><p>This means they are merely a snapshot of what we happened to get our hands on and may not be the true average of every bike ridden at the Tour.<\/p><p>The bikes were also weighed ready-to-ride with a number of accessories that rarely form part of the manufacturers&#8217; Simon von Bromley \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Let\u2019s start with Neilson Powless\u2019 Cannondale SuperSix Evo LAB71, the American brand\u2019s all-rounder racing platform.\u00a0<\/p><p>The SuperSix Evo sits alongside the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/bikes\/road-bikes\/cannondale-systemsix-carbon-ultegra-review\">SystemSix<\/a>, a dedicated aero bike, which has curiously not been updated since it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/news\/cannondale-claims-its-systemsix-to-be-the-fastest-uci-approved-road-bike-in-the-world\">launched in 2018<\/a>. However, it\u2019s still an option for pros who wish to ride it.\u00a0<\/p><p>LAB71 denotes the frame is constructed using Cannondale\u2019s most premium carbon fibre layup, with a painted size 56cm frame claimed to weigh only 770g.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/Neilson-Powless_Cannondale-SuperSix-Evo-LAB71_20240628_SvB_A6300_BR_0193-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Neilson Powless' Cannondale SuperSix Evo with Shimano Dura-Ace R9200 \" class=\"wp-image-873036\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Powless is running a Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 R9200 groupset. &#8211; Simon von Bromley \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Powless\u2019 bike is built up with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/components\/groupsets\/groupset-road\/shimano-dura-ace-di2-r9200-review\">Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 R9200<\/a> groupset, with a deviation to an FSA Powerbox K-Force Team crankset with an integrated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-power-meters\">power meter<\/a> spider.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>He\u2019s using a Vision Metron 60 SL wheelset, with 28c <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/components\/tyres\/road-bike-tyres\/vittoria-corsa-pro-tlr-tyre-review\">Vittoria Corsa Pro TLR tyres<\/a>. On the 21mm-wide rims, these tyres measured up at 28.4 and 28.6mm, front and rear.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/Neilson-Powless_Cannondale-SuperSix-Evo-LAB71_20240628_SvB_A6300_BR_0200-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Neilson Powless Cannondale SuperSix Evo LAB71 \" class=\"wp-image-873037\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Powless is running Vittoria rubber. &#8211; Simon von Bromley \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Up front, Powless is using the SystemBar R-One Carbon One-Piece Handlebar, which Cannondale designed in collaboration with MomoDesign.<\/p><p>Powless appears to use a 120mm stem paired with a handlebar that measures about 370mm wide centre-to-centre at the brake hoods.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/Neilson-Powless_Cannondale-SuperSix-Evo-LAB71_20240628_SvB_A6300_BR_0208-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Neilson Powless' Cannondale SuperSix Evo LAB71\" class=\"wp-image-873038\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The front end is integrated. &#8211; Simon von Bromley \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>We weighed Richard Carapaz\u2019s bike in 2023, which used an identical frame at 7.395kg.\u00a0<\/p><p>Powless\u2019 bike weighs just over 300g more and we\u2019d mainly put this down to the increase in frame size \u2013 he\u2019s riding a 58cm, whereas Carapaz takes a size 48cm.<\/p><p>Carapaz was also using the shallower-rimmed Vision Metron 45 SL wheelset, which saves a claimed 200g compared to the 60 SL wheelset.<\/p><p>If Powless wanted to get it closer to the 6.8kg mark, then, he could also opt for shallower wheels, but the aerodynamic gain\u00a0is probably worth the weight penalty outside of the high mountains.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/Neilson-Powless_Cannondale-SuperSix-Evo-LAB71_20240628_SvB_A6300_BR_0157-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Neilson Powless' Cannondale SuperSix Evo bike weight\" class=\"wp-image-873035\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Powless&#8217; bike is one of the heavier ones we weighed in this sample. &#8211; Simon von Bromley \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-jonas-vingegaard-s-cervelo-r5-6-74kg-nbsp\">Jonas Vingegaard\u2019s Cervelo R5 \u2013 6.74kg\u00a0<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/Jonas-Vingegaard_Cervelo-R5_20240628_SvB_A6300_BR_0259-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Jonas Vingegaard's Cervelo R5 for the 2024 Tour de France\" class=\"wp-image-871078\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Visma\u2013Lease a Bike mainly uses the Cerv\u00e9lo S5 aero bike, but also has the R5 on hand. &#8211; Simon von Bromley \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The R5 is Cerv\u00e9lo\u2019s lightweight race platform and an equivalent 56cm-sized, painted frameset is claimed to weigh 730g, undercutting the Cannondale SuperSix Evo LAB71 by 40g.<\/p><p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/bikes\/road-bikes\/cervelo-s5-force-etap-axs-review\">Cerv\u00e9lo S5<\/a> is the brand\u2019s more aerodynamic offering and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/bikes\/road-bikes\/cervelo-soloist-ultegra-di2-review\">Soloist<\/a>, which sits in between the R5 and S5, is the final option. It\u2019s seldom seen in WorldTour races beyond the odd appearance at the spring classics.\u00a0<\/p><p>Last year, at the 2022 Grand Depart in Bilbao, Spain, we weighed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/pro-bike\/vingegaard-cervelo-s5-versus-pogacar-colnago-v4rs\">Vingegaard\u2019s S5\u00a0at 7.195kg<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/Jonas-Vingegaard_Cervelo-R5_20240628_SvB_A6300_BR_0262-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Jonas Vingegaard's Cervelo R5 for the 2024 Tour de France\" class=\"wp-image-871327\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Vingegaard&#8217;s running the latest SRAM Red AXS. &#8211; Simon von Bromley \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>This R5 is specced with the new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/components\/groupsets\/groupset-road\/sram-red-axs-review\">SRAM Red AXS<\/a> groupset, with Vingegaard using a particularly big 52\/39t chainring combination (remember that\u2019s paired with a smaller 10t starting cog).\u00a0<\/p><p>Elsewhere, the bike\u2019s specced with Reserve 42|49 wheels, with an intriguing set of 29c Vittoria Corsa Pro TLR tyres, designed specifically for 25mm internal rim widths.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/Jonas-Vingegaard_Cervelo-R5_20240628_SvB_A6300_BR_0266-1-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Jonas Vingegaard's Cervelo R5 for the 2024 Tour de France\" class=\"wp-image-871336\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">An interesting set of tyres\u2026 &#8211; Simon von Bromley \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>As far as we can tell, this is a new size that\u2019s not yet available to everyday riders. We suspect it might have something to do with the UCI\u2019\u2019s recent stipulation that teams must follow the latest ISO and ETRTO standards, which state 28c tyres should be used on 25mm-wide rims, but we don\u2019t have any official details from the Italian manufacturer yet.<\/p><p>At 6.74kg, Vingegaard\u2019s R5 comes in 60g underneath the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/tech\/should-the-uci-bike-weight-limit-be-changed\">UCI\u2019s minimum bike weight limit<\/a> of 6.8kg, but we\u2019re sure finding the extra weight won\u2019t have been a hard job.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/Jonas-Vingegaard_Cervelo-R5_Tour-de-France-2024_-152-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Hanging scales showing the weight of Jonas Vingegaard's Cervelo R5 for the 2024 Tour de France\" class=\"wp-image-871385\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">UCI-illegal. &#8211; Simon von Bromley \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>A whisker heavier than the 7.245kg Tadej Poga\u010dar\u2019s bike weighed last year, the UAE Team Emirates champion\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/bikes\/road-bikes\/colnago-v4rs-dura-ace-di2-review\">Colnago V4Rs<\/a> is chock-full of bling.<\/p><p>The V4Rs is Colnago\u2019s race bike, with an unpainted frame carrying a claimed weight of 798g in a size 485 (the same size Poga\u010dar uses).<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/Tadej-Pogacar_Colnago-V4Rs_20240628_SvB_A6300_BR_0128-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-871346\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">CarbonTi chainrings are one of many pieces of eye candy. &#8211; Simon von Bromley \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>While not officially released yet, the Team Uno-X rider is riding <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/news\/alexander-kristof-dare-velocity-ace\">Dare\u2019s new aero bike<\/a>, which bucks the prevailing trend for all-rounder bikes.\u00a0<\/p><p>At 8kg on the dot, it\u2019s the heaviest bike we weighed at this year\u2019s Tour \u2013 255g more than the 7.745kg weight we took of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/pro-bike\/alexander-kristoffs-dare-vsru\">Kristoff&#8217;s Dare VSRu last year<\/a>.<\/p><p>In recent years, we\u2019ve seen a number of brands ditch dedicated aero road bikes in favour of models that balance aerodynamic performance with low weight.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/Alexander-Kristof_Dare-VA-AFO_20240627_SvB_A6300_BR_9912-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Dare handlebar on Alexander Kristof's Dare Velocity Ace\" class=\"wp-image-870526\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The front end certainly makes a statement. &#8211;
