{"id":67118,"date":"2024-07-19T11:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-07-19T09:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/0f98b9bf-ce27-43ab-9f73-79026e9dbec9"},"modified":"2024-07-19T11:25:32","modified_gmt":"2024-07-19T09:25:32","slug":"canyon-says-2024-aeroad-cfr-is-the-fastest-bike-in-the-pro-peloton","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/cyclingplus\/rss_feed\/canyon-says-2024-aeroad-cfr-is-the-fastest-bike-in-the-pro-peloton\/","title":{"rendered":"Canyon says 2024 Aeroad CFR is \u201cthe fastest bike in the pro peloton\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\">The new Aeroad sticks to the formula, but a host of updates are designed to make it lighter, faster and easier to live with <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Simon von Bromley\n      <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Friday, 19 July 2024 at 09:00 AM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>After teasing it in the pro peloton for a number of weeks, Canyon has announced the new Aeroad CFR, the latest update to its popular aero road bike.<\/p><p>Said to be both lighter and more aerodynamic than the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/news\/2021-canyon-aeroad\">third-generation version<\/a>, the 2024 Canyon Aeroad is claimed boldly to be \u201cthe fastest bike in the pro peloton\u201d.<\/p><p>Although it retains a similar overall silhouette to the outgoing model, every tube shape has been refined subtly, while Canyon has overhauled the bike\u2019s integrated cockpit, making it more customisable than before.<\/p><p>The German direct-sales brand also focused on making refinements to the Aeroad\u2019s serviceability and durability.<\/p><p>This, Canyon says, makes the new Aeroad as fit for everyday riders as it is for world champions such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/pro-bike\/mathieu-van-der-poel-2024-paris-roubaix-canyon-aeroad\">Mathieu van der Poel<\/a>.<\/p><p>The 2024 Canyon Aeorad range consists of six models across two tiers: CFR (standing for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/news\/canyon-ultimate-cfr\">Canyon Factory Racing<\/a> \u2013 its flagship sub-brand) and CF SLX.<\/p><p>Prices start at \u00a34,499 \/ $5,599 \/ \u20ac4,199 for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/components\/groupsets\/groupset-road\/sram-rival-etap-axs-review\">SRAM Rival AXS<\/a>-equipped Aeroad CF SLX 7 AXS and rise to\u00a0 \u00a39,749 \/ $10,499 \/ \u20ac10,499 for the Aeroad CFR AXS with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/news\/new-sram-red-axs\">SRAM\u2019s new Red AXS groupset<\/a>.<\/p><p>Simon von Bromley rode the new 2024 Canyon Aeroad CFR Di2 at its launch event in Spain. Simon von Bromley \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>According to Canyon, the design of the 2024 Aeroad was influenced primarily by feedback from its sponsored-professional riders and team mechanics.<\/p><p>Rather than requesting that the platform be overhauled completely, Canyon says the feedback focused on ways to refine the platform \u2013 such as making it lighter, more durable and easier to work on.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/2025-Canyon-Aeroad_20240605_SvB_A6300_BR_9621-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"2025 Canyon Aeroad CFR AXS\" class=\"wp-image-873097\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The overall design is similar to the outgoing model, but every tube shape has been updated subtly. &#8211; Simon von Bromley \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>As a result, the tube shapes have been updated subtly across the bike, with the front section of the frame focusing on aerodynamic improvements and the rear on weight, comfort and practicality.<\/p><p>Tyre clearance has been increased to 32mm, up from 30mm on the old bike, to enable the use of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/are-wider-tyres-faster\">wider tyres<\/a>.<\/p><p>Canyon has also redesigned the Aeroad\u2019s adjustable integrated cockpit, replacing the CP0018 Aerocockpit with the new CP0048 PACE Bar.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/2025-Canyon-Aeroad_20240605_SvB_A6300_BR_9657-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"2025 Canyon Aeroad CFR\" class=\"wp-image-873112\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Changes at the rear of the bike focus on reducing weight and improving comfort. &#8211; Simon von Bromley \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>PACE stands for \u2018Performance Adaptive Cockpit Ecosystem\u2019 and the new cockpit builds on the previous handlebar (which also features on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/bikes\/road-bikes\/canyon-ultimate-cfr-di2-2023-review\">Canyon\u2019s Ultimate CFR<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/bikes\/road-bikes\/canyon-endurace-cfr-etap-review\">Endurace CFR<\/a>) by adding the \u2018gear groove\u2019 from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/bikes\/gravel-bikes\/canyon-grail-cfr-di2-review\">Canyon Grail CFR<\/a> and increasing the amount of adjustability and customisation on offer.<\/p><p>The CP0048 PACE Bar also has interchangeable drops, which can be swapped without disconnecting the brake hoses (more on this later).<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-speed-refined\">Speed refined<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/2025-Canyon-Aeroad_GST-Wind-Tunnel-chart-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"2025 Canyon Aeroad GST Wind Tunnel chart\" class=\"wp-image-873118\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">According to testing at the GST Wind Tunnel in Germany, the 2024 Aeroad is more aerodynamic than Cerv\u00e9lo&#8217;s S5 and Specialized&#8217;s Tarmac SL8. &#8211; Canyon<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>As with any <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-aero-road-bike\">aero road bike<\/a>, one of the primary development goals with the new Aeroad was to make it faster.<\/p><p>According to Canyon\u2019s testing, which was conducted at the GST wind tunnel in Germany, the 2024 Canyon Aeroad is 1.6 watts more aerodynamically efficient at 45kph than the previous version.<\/p><p>Perhaps importantly, though, the same testing shows it is 2.5 watts more aerodynamic than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/bikes\/road-bikes\/cervelo-s5-force-etap-axs-review\">Cerv\u00e9lo\u2019s S5<\/a> and 8 watts more efficient than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/bikes\/road-bikes\/specialized-s-works-tarmac-sl8-dura-ace-di2-review-2\">Specialized\u2019s S-Works Tarmac SL8<\/a>.<\/p><p>For context, Canyon says all bikes were tested with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/news\/dt-swiss-arc-dicut-1100-1400\">DT Swiss ARC 1100 Dicut<\/a> wheels with 50mm-deep rims and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/components\/tyres\/road-bike-tyres\/schwalbe-pro-one-tubeless-review\">Schwalbe Pro One TLE tyres<\/a> (25c front and 28c rear). All bikes were tested without water bottles but with Canyon\u2019s &#8216;Ferdie&#8217; leg dummy (a set of moving dummy legs that simulate the effect of a rider aboard the bike).<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2400\" height=\"1600\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/Canyon_Aeroad_Development_Credit_Rene_Zieger_8-d99f69d.jpg\" alt=\"2021 Canyon Aeroad in the GST wind tunnel\" class=\"wp-image-873120\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Canyon uses its &#8216;Ferdi&#8217; dummy (seen here on the 2021 Canyon Aeroad) in wind tunnels to simulate the aerodynamic effects of a rider on the bike. &#8211; Canyon<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>According to Canyon, these gains have been realised via subtle refinements to the Aeroad\u2019s tube shapes.<\/p><p>Up front, the new fork features legs that are deeper and thinner, maximising their chord length in relation to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/tech\/2023-uci-rule-changes\">latest UCI technical regulations<\/a>.<\/p><p>The head tube and down tube have also been optimised by making them thinner. This reduces their frontal area and increases the effective aerofoil chord length, increasing their aerodynamic efficiency (in theory).<\/p><p>At the rear of the bike, the tube profiles have been made shorter and slimmer, while the top tube has been broadened to increase handling stiffness.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-heavier-frame-lighter-overall\">Heavier frame, lighter overall<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/2025-Canyon-Aeroad_20240605_SvB_A6300_BR_9624-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"2025 Canyon Aeroad CFR AXS\" class=\"wp-image-873098\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The 2024 Aeroad CFR frame is a little heavier, but overall weights for complete bikes have gone down. &#8211; Simon von Bromley \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>As well as being more aerodynamic, Canyon claims a complete 2024 Aeroad CFR weighs only 7.07kg in its lightest stock build \u2013 with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/components\/groupsets\/groupset-road\/shimano-dura-ace-di2-r9200-review\">Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 R9200 groupset<\/a> and DT Swiss ARC 1100 wheels \u2013 in a size medium.<\/p><p>That\u2019s 230g less than the third-generation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/bikes\/road-bikes\/canyon-aeroad-cfr-di2-review\">Canyon Aeroad CFR Di2<\/a> we reviewed in late 2020.<\/p><p>This is despite the frame\u2019s claimed weight going up by 45g, from 915g to 960g, for a size-medium frame with Canyon\u2019s \u2018stealth\u2019 artwork.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/2025-Canyon-Aeroad_20240605_SvB_A6300_BR_9654-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"2025 Canyon Aeroad\" class=\"wp-image-873140\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Complete bikes are specced with shallower wheels than previously, saving a little weight. &#8211; Canyon<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Canyon says the frame weight has gone up due to reinforcements to the carbon layup designed to make it more durable \u2013 a crucial factor for races such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/tech\/2024-paris-roubaix-tech\">Paris-Roubaix<\/a>.<\/p><p>Overall builds are lighter, though, thanks to the improved aerodynamics of the frameset, which enable the use of shallower rims without any loss of overall aerodynamic efficiency.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-pace-bar-and-interchangeable-drops\">PACE Bar and interchangeable drops<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/2025-Canyon-Aeroad_20240605_SvB_A6300_BR_9629-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"2025 Canyon Aeroad CFR AXS\" class=\"wp-image-873102\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Canyon&#8217;s new PACE Bar offers increased adjustability compared to the outgoing cockpit. &#8211; Simon von Bromley \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>As noted, the PACE Bar replaces the CP0018 Aerocockpit, with Canyon claiming it offers a more aerodynamic profile and increased adjustability.<\/p><p>The shape of the stem has been redesigned subtly, for example, with a more angular appearance, while there\u2019s now a greater width and height adjustment range available than before.<\/p><p>The range of width adjustment has increased from 40 to 50mm, while stack-height adjustment has increased to 20mm, up from 15mm.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2301\" height=\"1534\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/2025-Canyon-Aeroad_Interchangeable-drops.jpg\" alt=\"2025 Canyon Aeroad PACE Bar interchangeable drops\" class=\"wp-image-873119\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The PACE Bar system enables a large amount of customisation, but the stem length is still fixed. &#8211; Canyon<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>As before, there\u2019s no facility to adjust the stem length of the PACE Bar and Canyon won\u2019t be offering riders the option to spec a different stem length at the point of purchase either.<\/p><p>Canyon sees the new interchangeable drops as a potential solution to this, though.<\/p><p>At launch, two drop shapes will be available \u2013 its existing \u2018classic drops\u2019, as featured on the CP0018 Aerocockpit, and new \u2018aero drops\u2019.<\/p><p>The classic drops feature straight drops, with a compact bend shape and 130mm of drop. As before, these enable the handlebar width to be adjusted between 370 and 410mm.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/2025-Canyon-Aeroad_20240605_SvB_A6300_BR_9634-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"2025 Canyon Aeroad CF SLX AXS\" class=\"wp-image-873105\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The optional aero drops give the new Aeroad a narrower, flared handlebar, designed to promote a more aerodynamic riding position. &#8211; Simon von Bromley \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The aero drops, however, are much more progressively shaped, with 19 degrees of flare, 10mm of extra reach and 25mm less drop.<\/p><p>They also offer a hoods position 20mm narrower than with the classic drops (350 to 390mm).<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/sizing-and-fit\/narrow-handlebars\">Narrow and flared handlebars<\/a> are an increasingly common sight at the pointy end of the sport, with most riders at this year\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/tech\/2024-tour-de-france-tech-trends\">Tour de France<\/a> using sub-40cm handlebars. So, it&#8217;s little surprise to see another major brand adopting the trend.<\/p><p>One of Canyon\u2019s lead design engineers, Lukas Birr, says wind tunnel and track testing with multiple riders showed the aero bars offer a potential aerodynamic advantage of \u201cup to 14 watts\u201d, compared to the classic drops.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/simongehr_aeroad_presscamp-291-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"2025 Canyon Aeroad\" class=\"wp-image-873122\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Canyon says riders will need to adopt the right position in order to experience the biggest gains from its aero drops. &#8211; Canyon<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>He notes, though, that the magnitude of the saving is dependent on the rider and how they hold themselves on the bike \u2013 not everyone will see an instant 14-watt gain.<\/p><p>The biggest gains were seen with those who were riding the correct-sized frame and could get tucked down, with their elbows in.<\/p><p>At launch, all 2024 Aeroads will be specced with classic drops, with the aero drops available as an aftermarket upgrade for \u00a3239.95 \/ \u20ac230.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1706\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/2025-Canyon-Aeroad_20240605_SvB_A6300_BR_9644-edited-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"2025 Canyon Aeroad PACE T-Bar\" class=\"wp-image-873126\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Gear Groove enables accessories such as triathlon bars and bike computer mounts to be added to the PACE Bar. &#8211; Simon von Bromley \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Birr hinted that more options and drop geometries may follow post-launch, but declined to offer any details on what we might see or when.<\/p><p>As on the Grail handlebar, the Gear Groove enables accessories such as a bike computer mount or Canyon\u2019s PACE T-Bar triathlon bars (\u00a3208.95) to be mounted to the Aeroad.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-one-fastener-to-rule-them-all\">One fastener to rule them all<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1895\" height=\"1263\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/2025-Canyon-Aeroad_20240605_SvB_A6300_BR_9658-edited.jpg\" alt=\"2025 Canyon Aeroad CFR\" class=\"wp-image-873123\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Canyon has moved to a single fastener for all bolts riders interact with. &#8211; Simon von Bromley \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Beyond changes that make the 2024 Aeroad lighter and faster, Canyon has also incorporated a number of alterations to ensure it&#8217;s easier to service.<\/p><p>Perhaps the biggest change is the move to speccing Torx 25 heads on every bolt a rider is likely to interact with, across the frameset, cockpit and seatpost.<\/p><p>Helpfully, a T25 bit is integrated into the head of the thru-axle lever \u2013 meaning if you keep that on the bike, you\u2019ll always have access to a tool to adjust the key components during the ride.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2400\" height=\"1600\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/2025-Canyon-Aeroad_005.jpg\" alt=\"2025 Canyon Aeroad\" class=\"wp-image-873079\" style=\"width:840px;height:auto\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A T25 bit is incorporated into the thru-axle lever. &#8211; Canyon<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Canyon says the bolts are made in Germany, ensuring \u201chigh strength, precision bolts\u201d that are less likely to round out or corrode.<\/p><p>The running change made to the seatpost on the previous-generation Aeroad has also been retained, with the 2024 Aeroad moving to a more conventional seatpost and clamp arrangement on top of the top tube (the previous Aeroad featured a seatpost clamp on the rear of the seat tube).<\/p><p>In part, this came from feedback from Canyon\u2019s star athlete, Mathieu van der Poel, who said he felt the rear end of the old Aeroad was too compliant.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/2025-Canyon-Aeroad_20240605_SvB_A6300_BR_9628-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"2025 Canyon Aeroad CFR AXS\" class=\"wp-image-873100\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The seatpost clamp has been moved to a more traditional location, on top of the top tube. &#8211; Simon von Bromley \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>According to Birr, van der Poel wanted more road feedback through the rear end, which prompted the German brand to create <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/news\/mathieu-van-der-poel-new-canyon-aeroad-milan-sanremo\">an updated version for him (which he duly won Milan-San Remo on)<\/a>.<\/p><p>Canyon has also updated the headset, moving to a stainless steel-ceramic hybrid bearing co-developed with Acros.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2400\" height=\"1600\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/2025-Canyon-Aeroad_004.jpg\" alt=\"2025 Canyon Aeroad\" class=\"wp-image-873078\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Canyon says the updated headset is better sealed and uses high-quality bearings that should last much longer than before. &#8211; Canyon<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>According to Canyon, these should dramatically improve their longevity, while the headset seals have also been updated, with a titanium bearing seat, to make the headset &#8216;pressure-washer proof&#8217;
