{"id":67138,"date":"2024-07-23T11:08:31","date_gmt":"2024-07-23T09:08:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/a949ed03-cf19-41c6-b069-4c15a909059d"},"modified":"2024-07-23T11:25:26","modified_gmt":"2024-07-23T09:25:26","slug":"first-look-the-new-ribble-allroad-looks-like-an-aero-bike-but-promises-endurance-comfort","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/cyclingplus\/rss_feed\/first-look-the-new-ribble-allroad-looks-like-an-aero-bike-but-promises-endurance-comfort\/","title":{"rendered":"First Look | The new Ribble Allroad looks like an aero bike but promises endurance comfort"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\">Three-bike range replaces Ribble&#8217;s Endurance line-up <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Warren Rossiter\n      <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Tuesday, 23 July 2024 at 09:08 AM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>Ribble\u2019s long-standing Endurance bike line has been replaced by the new Allroad range, with the design inspired by the cutting-edge Ribble Ultra SLR aero road bike.<\/p><p>The British brand tells us the new Allroad line is the result of three years of R&amp;D and real-world testing.\u00a0<\/p><p>The concept of the new platform was to take the lessons learned and the technical achievements of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/news\/ribble-ultra\">Ultra SLR<\/a>, and trickle that technology into a bike with the more relaxed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/sizing-and-fit\/road-bike-geometry-explained\">geometry <\/a>associated with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-endurance-road-bikes\">endurance bikes<\/a>, while promising all-day comfort on multiple surfaces and year-round usability.\u00a0<\/p><p>The Allroad platform consists of three models \u2013 the Allroad SL, Allroad SL R and Allroad SL R e.\u00a0<\/p><p>While the silhouette of each model looks similar, there are distinct differences between the bikes.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-allroad-sl-r\">Allroad SL R\u00a0<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The top-tier Allroad SL R sports a distinctive rear-wheel cut-out in its aero seat tube. &#8211; Scott Windsor \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The range-topping Allroad SL R has a deep aero-shaped seat tube with a rear-wheel cut-out to give the SL R generous (for the road) 38mm tyre clearance.\u00a0<\/p><p>It\u2019s topped by an aero-shaped seatpost, which looks like a scaled-down version of the deep aero shape found on the Ultra.\u00a0<\/p><p>The down tube on the SL R is aerodynamically shaped to cut through the air and to hide the down-tube mounted bottle for smoother airflow.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/AM9A1875-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Ribble Allroad SL R\" class=\"wp-image-873670\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The down tube storage port houses a Restrap bag. &#8211; Scott Windsor \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Ribble has also taken advantage of the increased volume of the down tube by incorporating some storage. <\/p><p>Inside the storage port, you\u2019ll find a dedicated bag system designed and made by fellow UK-based outfit Restrap.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/AM9A1827-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Ribble Allroad SL R\" class=\"wp-image-873700\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The UB-2 handlebar is inspired by the bar on Ribble&#8217;s Ultra SLR. &#8211; Scott Windsor \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Up-front, the SL R sports a new handlebar called the UB-2 (Ultra Bar 2). This takes the wild shape of the Ultra SLR\u2019s bar, with its patented airflow-disrupting wake generators and sculpted drops, along with direct-mounting points for the brake levers.\u00a0<\/p><p>Unlike the Ultra SLR bar, though, this one is separate from the stem, giving a wider choice of options for Allroad riders to mix and match stem and bar widths using Ribble\u2019s online bike builder.<\/p><p>As on the Ultra SL R, the tops of the handlebar are too bulbous to wrap with handlebar tape. Wrapping the drops is optional and there is a gripped surface to stop your hands sliding around if you decide to go without tape.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>The SL R is constructed with a blend of Toray T1000 carbon and M46 fibres, which Ribble claims gives it the best blend of stiffness and compliance where needed, while keeping weight down.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/AM9A1866-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Ribble Allroad SL R\" class=\"wp-image-873675\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">There&#8217;s clearance for tyres up to 38mm. &#8211; Scott Windsor \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>All in, the top-spec \u2018Hero\u2019 build (as pictured) is claimed to weigh 7.5kg in size medium. Our size-XL (roughly equivalent to a size 58cm) test bike tips our scales at 8.43kg.\u00a0<\/p><p>The SL R model starts at \u00a32,999 for the Shimano 105 R7100 model with Mavic Aksium wheels and alloy bar, rising to the Hero model, which comes with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/components\/groupsets\/groupset-road\/shimano-dura-ace-di2-r9200-review\">Dura-Ace Di2 R9200<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/components\/wheels\/wheel-sets\/zipp-353-nsw-wheelset-review\">Zipp\u2019s 353 NSW <\/a>wheels and the UB-2 carbon bar.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/AM9A1819-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Ribble Allroad SL R\" class=\"wp-image-873704\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The new Allroad SL R would appear to offer good value compared to its rivals. &#8211; Scott Windsor \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The Hero model costs \u00a38,299, which is impressive value when compared to bikes with equivalent specification. For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/bikes\/road-bikes\/specialized-s-works-roubaix-sl8-first-ride-review\">Specialized\u2019s S-Works Roubaix SL8<\/a> with SRAM Red AXS is priced at \u00a312,000.\u00a0<\/p><p>Likewise, Trek\u2019s Domane SLR 9 Gen 4 (with Dura-Ace Di2) is \u00a310,800 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/bikes\/road-bikes\/giant-defy-advanced-sl-0-review\">Giant\u2019s Defy Advanced SL 0 <\/a>with Red AXS is \u00a311,499.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-allroad-sl-r-e\">Allroad SL R e\u00a0<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2500\" height=\"1667\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/Ribble-Allroad-SL-R-e-main-angled-front-s.jpg\" alt=\"Ribble Allroad SL R e\" class=\"wp-image-873666\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The SL R e gets Mahle&#8217;s X20 rear-hub motor and a 350Wh battery. &#8211; Ribble<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-electric-bikes\">electric bike<\/a> edition of the Allroad design takes the SL R template and carbon construction and adds Mahle\u2019s compact X20 rear-hub <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/electric-bike-motors\">motor system<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p><p>This is powered by a 350Wh battery enclosed within the aero-optimised down tube. Naturally, then, it forgoes the storage space, and instead of tapering slimmer below the bottle mounts, it stays broad.\u00a0<\/p><p>That said, it\u2019s hard to discern the SL R e is an ebike, with a similarly stealthy silhouette to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-electric-road-bikes\">electric road bikes<\/a> such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/bikes\/electric-bikes\/bmc-roadmachine-amp-one-review\">BMC\u2019s Roadmachine AMP<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/bikes\/electric-bikes\/wilier-filante-slr-hybrid-review\">Wilier\u2019s Filante SLR Hybrid<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/bikes\/electric-bikes\/scott-addict-eride-premium-review\">Scott\u2019s Addict eRide<\/a>.<\/p><p>Like the SL R, this electric version has generous 38mm tyre clearance and full fittings for mudguards.<\/p><p>It comes with the same UB-2 aero handlebar on the Pro and Hero models.<\/p><p>The Hero model is specced with Mavic\u2019s Cosmic SL 45 wheelset and the UB-2 bar.\u00a0<\/p><p>The Allroad SL e range starts with a Shimano 105 R7100 model running on Mavic Allroad alloy wheels for \u00a33,999, and rises to the Hero model at \u00a38,499.\u00a0<\/p><p>We\u2019ve got hold of the Pro model, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/components\/groupsets\/groupset-road\/shimano-ultegra-r8170-di2-review\">Ultegra Di2 R8100<\/a> and Mavic Cosmic SL 45 wheels. It tips our scales at 12.27kg (size XL) and is priced at \u00a35,999.<\/p><p>Ribble claims up to 140km of range with the internal battery, which increases to more than 200km with a range extender.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-entry-into-allroad-aero-with-the-sl\">Entry into Allroad aero with the SL\u00a0<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2500\" height=\"1667\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/Ribble-Allroad-SL-main-angled-front-s.jpg\" alt=\"Ribble Allroad SL\" class=\"wp-image-873665\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Tyre clearance drops to 35mm on the Allroad SL, which has a standard round seatpost. &#8211; Ribble<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The Allroad SL frameset shares the same geometry as the SL R, but forgoes the aero-shaped seat tube and seatpost in favour of a standard round 27.2mm post.\u00a0<\/p><p>The round seat tube tapers to provide 35mm of tyre clearance (3mm less than the SL R).\u00a0<\/p><p>Like the SL R, it has the same bottle-shielding down tube shape, though not the storage compartment.<\/p><p>The carbon layup has also been tweaked, featuring a mix of Toray T1000 and T800 fibre.<\/p><p>Ribble claims a weight of 8.8kg for a size-medium Pro build (Shimano 105 Di2 R7100 and Mavic Cosmic S 42 carbon wheels).
