&#8211; Scott Windsor \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Debuted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/news\/elastic-interface-n3x\">at Eurobike 2022<\/a>, this is the first 3D-printed chamois, and has taken two years to make its way onto\u00a0production shorts.\u00a0<\/p><p>As is to be expected with cutting-edge tech, the Gore Ultimate Bib Shorts sit at the top of the range and will set you back \u00a3251.99 \/ \u20ac279.95.\u00a0<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-new-dawn-for-chamois-tech-nbsp\">A new dawn for chamois tech?\u00a0<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2400\" height=\"1600\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2022\/07\/Elastic-Interface-pad-2-c9ddf0e.jpg\" alt=\"Elastic Interface N3X chamois pad\" class=\"wp-image-689180\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">We first reported on the 3D-printed tech at Eurobike 2022. &#8211; Jack Luke \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Elastic Interface\u2019s Expert N3X 3D-printed insert is manufactured in Italy using a specially designed 3D printer.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>The N3X pad is claimed to be more comfortable than a traditional foam pad because Elastic Interface has more control over its technical properties during construction.<\/p><p>As with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/3d-printed-saddles\">3D-printed saddles<\/a>, Elastic Interface can control the pad\u2019s density (how squishy it is) with a higher degree of localised control.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/AM9A1407-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Elastic Interface N3X 3D-printed pad on Gore Ultimate Men's Bib Shorts \" class=\"wp-image-873823\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The pad is noticeably firmer at the rear. &#8211; Scott Windsor \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The open-cell lattice structure is claimed to improve airflow, wicking away moisture and keeping you cool.\u00a0<\/p><p>In addition, the unnamed hydrophobic material is said to be quick-drying, making it ideal for hot conditions.\u00a0<\/p><p>In the hand, the chamois feels very different from a traditional foam pad and, as is common on 3D-printed saddles, the front of the pad is noticeably squishier than the rear.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/AM9A1497-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Elastic Interface N3X 3D-printed pad on Gore Ultimate Men's Bib Shorts \" class=\"wp-image-873832\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The shorts are designed for racing and long-distance riding across road and gravel. &#8211; Scott Windsor \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The way the front of the pad is attached in these Gore shorts is also interesting. It uses a suspended insert (separate from the main panel of the shorts), which eventually meets the front of the hem. Gore claims this further helps to keep the pad in place.\u00a0<\/p><p>Elsewhere, the bib straps feel pretty minimal, with Gore designing them for maximum breathability and even tension.\u00a0<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-will-3d-printing-take-off-on-bib-shorts-nbsp\">Will 3D printing take off on bib shorts?\u00a0<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1454\" height=\"969\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2020\/06\/specialized_mirror_saddle_woz_7-8845708-e1591109843508.jpg\" alt=\"The new Specialized S-Works Power Mirror saddle\" class=\"wp-image-447087\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">3D printing has taken off in the world of saddles. &#8211; Warren Rossiter \/ Immediate Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>While 3D-printing has become common for saddles, it will be interesting to see how clothing brands respond.\u00a0<\/p><p>The chamois is also specced on X-Bionic\u2019s Corefusion Compression bib shorts, which retail for a more fierce \u00a3325 \/ $455 \/ \u20ac329. We expect further brands to launch options in due course.\u00a0<\/p><p>While there are undeniable benefits for saddles, the shape of the saddle is far more important and is what dictates rider comfort.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/AM9A1492-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Elastic Interface N3X 3D-printed pad on Gore Ultimate Men's Bib Shorts \" class=\"wp-image-873827\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">We expect other brands to spec this new pad soon. &#8211; Scott Windsor \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The shape of a chamois is more limited and if a clothing brand thinks it has got a more comfortable recipe, uptake may not be as prolific.\u00a0<\/p><p>It will also be interesting to see whether alternative 3D-printed chamois designs emerge.\u00a0<\/p><p>For example, Specialized and Fizik saddles use tech in their polymer matrix uppers from the same brand \u2013 Carbon 3D.\u00a0<\/p><p>Selle Italia and Posedla, for example, use different technologies for their 3D-printed padding.\u00a0<\/p><p>Either way, it\u2019s exciting to see new chamois technology \u2013 an area that has hardly seen headline-worthy development for some years.
