Inject additional targets<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1067\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/How-to-ride-solo-05.jpg\" alt=\"Lone cyclist riding through countryside\" class=\"wp-image-875075\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Plan a varied session to help motivate yourself and keep focused. &#8211; Joseph Branston \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>To stay focused on solo rides, add in some mid-ride goals, such as targeting certain climbs or speedy flat roads.<\/p><p>\u201cFor example, create a route with a climb as a target destination,\u201d says Rollinson.<\/p><p>\u201cThis helps to break up your ride into sections, each with a different mental focus, such as some flat riding, a climb, a descent and a fast, flat finish.\u201d<\/p><p>Rather than three hours of the same riding, you now have a structured, targetable solo <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/fitness-and-training\/the-5-key-areas-of-training-for-road-cyclists\">training session<\/a>.<\/p><\/div><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container\"><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-rig-your-route\">4. Rig your route<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1067\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/How-to-ride-solo-11.jpg\" alt=\"Lizzie Deignan\" class=\"wp-image-875081\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Lizzie Deignan\u2019s solo training rides have no shortcuts.<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Be prepared to play mind games for extra motivation when riding solo.<\/p><p>On training rides back home in Yorkshire, British pro Lizzie Deignan would deliberately plot out-and-back loops so she couldn\u2019t take a short cut home.<\/p><p>\u201cIt stops you getting tempted to quit early,\u201d she explains.<\/p><p>Breaking down bigger distances into smaller sections so you can tick them off as you go is another useful trick, as is thinking about different areas of technique, or your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/skills\/what-is-cycling-cadence\">cadence<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/fitness-and-training\/cycling-and-breathing\">breathing<\/a> for example.<\/p><\/div><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container\"><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-be-self-sufficient\">5. Be self-sufficient<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1703\" height=\"1134\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2023\/08\/8058ec70-a962-41cd-a736-ef3bb4fd5824-a3f2fb4-e1691420970996.jpg\" alt=\"Oscar Huckle riding Stomp Lox Slack shoes\" class=\"wp-image-742349\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Take what you need to fix mechanicals. &#8211; Robert O&#8217;Keefe \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Solo rides are much more fun if you feel confident and prepared.<\/p><p>\u201cYou may need extra <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/workshop\/essential-bike-maintenance-tips\">bike-repair skills<\/a> as you are reliant on yourself,\u201d says Rollinson.<\/p><p>Freshen up your skills by watching YouTube videos, and pack essentials such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-tyre-levers\">tyre levers<\/a>, Allen keys, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-bike-pump\">a pump<\/a>, patches and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/bike-inner-tubes\">inner tubes<\/a>.<\/p><p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-saddle-bags\">saddle bag<\/a> can be a useful bit of kit to help stop your pockets bulging too much.<\/p><p>Using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/tubeless\">tubeless tyres<\/a> can help to cut out those forlorn spells spent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/workshop\/how-to-fix-a-puncture-video\">fixing punctures<\/a> alone by the side of the road.<\/p><\/div><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container\"><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-6-audition-your-new-kit\">6. Audition your new kit<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1067\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/How-to-ride-solo-08.jpg\" alt=\"Cyclist riding through countryside\" class=\"wp-image-875078\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Around 30 per cent of energy can be saved by riding behind someone else, so look at aero clothing and tech when cycling solo. &#8211; Joseph Branston \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Solo cycling is the ideal time to test new kit, clothing and devices because you can tinker and adjust things without holding up other people.<\/p><p>\u201cSolo riding gives you time to get used to a new component or position,\u201d says Rollinson.<\/p><p>\u201cFor example, if you have cleats in a new position, you will not be stuck on a group ride wishing you could pull over to adjust them.\u201d<\/p><p>Facing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/how-to-ride-into-a-headwind\">headwinds<\/a> on solo rides can also help you sharpen up your aerodynamics.<\/p><\/div><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container\"><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-7-push-your-solo-stamina\">7. Push your solo stamina<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1066\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/05\/When-Worlds-Collide-07.jpg\" alt=\"Cyclists riding the Yorkshire Dales\" class=\"wp-image-864367\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Start training for solo cycling with two-hour tempo rides. &#8211; Joe Cotterill \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>\u201cGroup-ride pacing is more varied, with turns on the front and recoveries, but on solo rides you have to maintain a steady pace for longer,\u201d says Rollinson.<\/p><p>\u201cThis builds your endurance at a consistently higher rate, helping to develop aerobic capacity and mental toughness.\u201d<\/p><p>He suggests a two-hour solo ride at tempo pace in Zone 3, within 76-88 per cent of your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/fitness-and-training\/what-is-ftp-and-why-it-matters-for-cyclists\">Functional Threshold Power<\/a>.<\/p><p>You can also establish your tempo pace with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/fitness-and-training\/training-zones\">heart rate zones<\/a>. Start in your upper Zone 2 heart rate (76-83 per cent) and slowly drift up to your lower heart rate Zone 3 (83-90 per cent).<\/p><p>\u201cProgress ride duration weekly,\u201d Rollinson advises.<\/p><\/div><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container\"><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-8-mix-up-your-motivation\">8. Mix up your motivation<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1067\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/05\/SRAM-Red-AXS-53.jpeg\" alt=\"SRAM Red AXS road groupset\" class=\"wp-image-862816\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Build in sprints to your rides to develop your fitness. &#8211; Russell Burton \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Your motivation may drift on longer solo rides, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/fitness-and-training\/how-to-improve-your-sprinting\">sprint intervals<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/fitness-and-training\/how-to-become-a-hill-climbing-star\">hill reps<\/a> can work well.<\/p><p>\u201cYou can develop another dimension to your fitness with Fartlek rides,\u201d suggests Rollinson.<\/p><p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t as easy to do on group rides.&#8221; <\/p><p>Rollison recommends the following exercises:<\/p><ul><li><strong>Sprints:<\/strong> 10 secs at 8-10 Rate of Perceived Exertion (RPE) scored out of 10, with 10 being the maximum effort<\/li><li><strong>FTP efforts: <\/strong>20 minutes at 90 per cent of FTP<\/li><li><strong>VO\u2082 max efforts:<\/strong> 5 minutes at 105-120 per cent FTP or 8-10 RPE<\/li><\/ul><p>You can also try a mix of these three workouts. <\/p><p>&#8220;Or, to keep things really simple, just sprint for road signs,&#8221; Rollinson says. <\/p><\/div><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container\"><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-9-stay-safe\">9. Stay safe<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1067\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/How-to-ride-solo-07.jpg\" alt=\"Cyclist riding through a seaside village\" class=\"wp-image-875077\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">You can share your live location with your family and friends via an app. &#8211; Joseph Branston \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Cycling is a safe sport, but some solo riders feel more confident by taking a few peace-of-mind precautions.<\/p><p>For example, a 2021 survey revealed that 41 per cent of women in the UK have concerns over road safety or cycling alone.<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-cycling-apps\">Cycling apps<\/a> such as RoadiD and Strava Beacon enable you to share your live location with family or friends.<\/p><p>Listening to music isn\u2019t advisable on busy roads, but on quiet country lanes some riders use only their left (non-roadside) earplug, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-headphones-for-cycling\">bone-conduction headphones<\/a> as a compromise between musical motivation and traffic awareness.<\/p><\/div><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container\"><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-10-play-around\">10.
