{"id":68438,"date":"2024-08-21T17:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-08-21T15:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/9cb97c6e-4c69-49fe-a4ea-3ebaa30774da"},"modified":"2024-08-21T17:25:31","modified_gmt":"2024-08-21T15:25:31","slug":"bike-of-the-week-3t-extrema-italia-blurs-the-lines-between-gravel-and-mountain-biking","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/cyclingplus\/rss_feed\/bike-of-the-week-3t-extrema-italia-blurs-the-lines-between-gravel-and-mountain-biking\/","title":{"rendered":"Bike of the Week | 3T Extrema Italia blurs the lines between gravel and mountain biking"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\">One gravel bike to rule them all?\u00a0 <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Oscar Huckle\n      <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Wednesday, 21 August 2024 at 15:00 PM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>3T\u2019s Extrema Italia combines elements of gravel and mountain bike design \u2013 and is intended to take on the chunkiest gravel you can find, with clearance for massive 57mm tyres.\u00a0<\/p><p>The Italian brand says the Extrema Italia is built for \u201cthe toughest race courses and fast adventures\u201d.\u00a0<\/p><p>In keeping with the brand\u2019s unique design language, the Extrema Italia\u2019s frameset is aerodynamically optimised, while sporting mountain bike components including a SRAM Eagle Transmission drivetrain and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/components\/seatposts\/rockshox-reverb-axs-xplr-dropper-post-review\">RockShox Reverb AXS XPLR dropper post<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p><p>It\u2019s refreshingly different from most <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-gravel-bikes\">gravel bikes<\/a> and we\u2019re struggling to think of a mainstream option that packs in as much tyre clearance.\u00a0<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-big-clearances-meets-aero-nbsp\">Big clearances meets aero\u00a0<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">As the name hints, it&#8217;s Italian-made. &#8211; Scott Windsor \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The \u2018Italia\u2019 in this bike\u2019s name signifies it\u2019s made in 3T\u2019s HQ in Presezzo, Italy, with the brand using 3T&#8217;s proprietary filament-winding process.\u00a0<\/p><p>In a nutshell, this process involves spinning a carbon fibre yarn onto a core to create a carbon structure. Unlike cutting sheets of carbon fibre to the desired shape, filament winding enables 3T to angle the fibres exactly as desired.\u00a0<\/p><p>3T designs its bikes around a specific tyre-width range, referred to as WAM (Width As Measured). The brand is then able to aerodynamically optimise the frame around a certain tyre-width range, which is 50mm to 57mm on this bike. \u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/08\/AM9A1441-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"3T Extrema Italia\" class=\"wp-image-878332\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">3T recommends you run a tyre that measures between 50 and 57mm. &#8211; Scott Windsor \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>By comparison, the more race-oriented RaceMax Italia is designed for 35mm to 46mm WAM tyres.\u00a0<\/p><p>3T says the Extrema Italia delivers the same bottom bracket and head tube stiffness values as the RaceMax Italia, but is more compliant thanks to an updated carbon layup with the thinner seat tube.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/08\/AM9A1428-1-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"3T Extrema Italia \" class=\"wp-image-878317\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">One girthy down tube. &#8211; Scott Windsor \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The down tube does a lot of the heavy lifting in terms of aerodynamics, with a \u2018neck\u2019 (the section between the bottle cage bolts and the head tube junction) that\u2019s 60mm wide. The down tube then widens to 75mm as it heads towards the BB386 EVO bottom bracket junction.\u00a0<\/p><p>The down tube redirects the airflow over the frame, shielding the bottles, according to 3T.\u00a0<\/p><p>The down tube is also size-specific for each frame size and the gap between the down tube and front tyre is minimised for less turbulence.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/08\/AM9A1462-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"3T Extrema Italia \" class=\"wp-image-878345\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The bottom bracket junction is striking. &#8211; Scott Windsor \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Elsewhere, there\u2019s a sculpted cut-out on the seat tube to shield the rear wheel for an aerodynamic advantage.\u00a0<\/p><p>What 3T calls its \u2018DoubleDrop chainstays\u2019 are also striking, with the brand saying this design creates a stiffer bottom bracket and decreases weight.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/08\/AM9A1458-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"3T Extrema Italia \" class=\"wp-image-878341\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The hoses are routed through the bar into a separate stem. &#8211; Scott Windsor \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The Extrema Italia uses 3T\u2019s Integrale system. Or, in other words, a separate handlebar and stem, which allows for more adjustability than a one-piece cockpit.\u00a0<\/p><p>3T has spared some thought for the real-world needs of the consumer though. You don\u2019t have to disconnect the hydraulic hoses to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/workshop\/how-to-adjust-your-handlebar-height\">adjust the handlebar height<\/a>, swap the stem length by +\/- 10mm or even fully remove the stem for travel.\u00a0<\/p><p>The Extrema Italia includes mounts for a top tube bag or bento box and integrated mudguard mounts, and the fork has triple cargo mounts. 3T states in its technical documentation that the legs are rated to carry a load of up to 3kg on either side.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1706\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/08\/AM9A1442-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"3T Extrema Italia \" class=\"wp-image-878333\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">3T opts for a round 27.2mm seatpost diameter standard. &#8211; Scott Windsor \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The bike uses a 27.2mm round <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/seatposts\">seatpost<\/a>, bringing compatibility for either a rigid seatpost or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-gravel-dropper-posts\">dropper post<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p><p>It also specs an on-trend <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/workshop\/sram-udh\">SRAM UDH<\/a> (Universal Derailleur Hanger) dropout.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/08\/AM9A1445-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"3T Extrema Italia \" class=\"wp-image-878336\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A clean, adaptor-free aesthetic. &#8211; Scott Windsor \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>A really neat detail is you don\u2019t need adaptors for the brake calipers because 3T has integrated their height into the chainstay and fork\u2019s profiles. That means you have to run a 160mm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/disc-brake-rotors\">disc brake rotor<\/a> at the front though.\u00a0<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-burly-build-nbsp\">A burly build\u00a0<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/08\/AM9A1429-1-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"3T Extrema Italia \" class=\"wp-image-878319\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">3T opts for a mullet drivetrain. &#8211; Scott Windsor \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>We have the mid-range Extrema Italia build in for testing, which will set\u00a0you back a not inconsiderable \u00a37,593 \/ $9,199 \/ \u20ac8,232 \/ AU$12,885.\u00a0<\/p><p>SRAM Rival eTap AXS shifters, brakes and crankset are paired with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/news\/sram-gx-eagle-transmission\">GX Eagle Transmission <\/a>components for the rest of the drivetrain.\u00a0<\/p><p>Keeping things in the SRAM family are a set of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/components\/wheels\/wheel-sets\/zipp-303s-review\">Zipp 303S<\/a> wheels, with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/hookless-rims-road-tubeless\">hookless rim<\/a> profile that measures 23mm internally and 45mm deep. They\u2019re wrapped in beefy 29x2in Continental RaceKing tyres, which measure 50.87mm on my digital calipers.\u00a0<\/p><p>A RockShox Reverb AXS XPLR dropper post also signifies the bike\u2019s off-road prowess.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/08\/AM9A1456-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"3T Extrema Italia \" class=\"wp-image-878340\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The drops have a dramatic flare. &#8211; Scott Windsor \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Completing the build is a 3T Aeroghiaia Integrale carbon handlebar in a 42cm width. With my tape measure, the tops measure 40cm centre to centre, while the dramatically flared drops measure 48cm.\u00a0<\/p><p>The tops have an aero profiling, with the front section curved, enabling you to curl your fingers round them, with a sharper profile around the back of the hoods.\u00a0<\/p><p>The bike was meant to come with the aerodynamically optimised 3T Torno carbon crank, but production has been delayed on these. If you have bought an Extrema Italia that&#8217;s meant to have a 3T Torno crank, the brand says it will send one out once it&#8217;s available.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/08\/AM9A1430-1-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"3T Extrema Italia \" class=\"wp-image-878321\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">This particular model mixes SRAM GX Eagle Transmission and Rival components. &#8211; Scott Windsor \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>My size-large bike weighs 9.7kg, which \u2013\u00a0although weighty \u2013 is realistic considering the MTB-oriented drivetrain and tyres.\u00a0<\/p><p>The Extrema Italia range starts at \u00a36,677 \/ $7,999 \/ \u20ac7,240 \/ AU$11,491 \u2013 it\u2019s exactly the same build as shown here, but you miss out on the wireless dropper post and 3T Torno crank.\u00a0<\/p><p>The top-of-the-range model will set you back \u00a39,605 \/ $11,599 \/ \u20ac10,414 \/ AU$15,950.
