{"id":68636,"date":"2024-08-24T17:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-08-24T15:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/3cfaa90f-bafe-44f6-9b8e-7bccf9ab0859"},"modified":"2024-08-24T17:25:31","modified_gmt":"2024-08-24T15:25:31","slug":"ashley-quinlan-i-scared-myself-silly-riding-gravel-bikes-on-swiss-mountain-trails-but-id-do-it-again","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/cyclingplus\/rss_feed\/ashley-quinlan-i-scared-myself-silly-riding-gravel-bikes-on-swiss-mountain-trails-but-id-do-it-again\/","title":{"rendered":"Ashley Quinlan | I scared myself silly riding gravel bikes on Swiss mountain trails, but I\u2019d do it again"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\">How I developed my gravel riding skills in the toughest environment I may ever face <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Ashley Quinlan\n      <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Saturday, 24 August 2024 at 15:00 PM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>Long have I admired those who make riding their bikes off-road seem easy.<\/p><p>If I watch (or indeed, try to follow) an experienced off-road rider in their natural domain, I\u2019m always gobsmacked by how effortless their bike-handling skills are.\u00a0<\/p><p>It confounds me how fast they can go over loose surfaces and features \u2013 and how simple it all looks.\u00a0<\/p><p>This August, I was invited to the Swiss Jura mountains to check out the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/bikes\/gravel-bikes\/bmc-urs-range-first-ride-review\">2024 BMC URS gravel bikes<\/a>, and \u2013 in keeping with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/news\/2024-bmc-urs\">adventurous ethos of the URS<\/a> \u2013 the brand laid on some suitably extreme <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/routes-and-rides\/what-is-gravel-riding\">gravel riding<\/a> designed to test the bike to the limit.<\/p><p>Surely I could use this to push my riding skills to the next level, boost my confidence riding on more technical terrain and generally turn myself into a bit of a hero.\u00a0<\/p><p>Quickly, I found I needed to leave my ego in my wooden cabin, as I was confronted with stints of gnarly singletrack, narrow off-camber trails and a constantly changing mix of gravel farm tracks.<\/p><p>I have emerged a better rider as a result of my occasionally terrifying ordeal, and it\u2019s not just because of the kit and setup I was riding.\u00a0<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-ride-plan-nbsp\">The ride plan\u00a0<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">I&#8217;ll confess to being a little nervous while preparing for our adventure ride. &#8211; BMC \/ Christophe Baer<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>As with most bike launches, BMC\u2019s marketing team had informed me of the basic plan before I flew out.\u00a0<\/p><p>The event would consist of a 110km adventure, starting in Oensingen, and taking in a mix of terrain, from wide princess gravel to gnarlier singletrack trails, with a mix of steep climbs and fast \u2013 and technical \u2013 descents.<\/p><p>I was told some sections might involve some hike-a-biking, but that the terrain was picked to showcase the URS\u2019 adventure-gravel capability.\u00a0<\/p><p>We\u2019d stop at a remote bison ranch overnight after around 75km of riding, before heading along the mountain ridge to the peak of the Chasseral mountain the next day, then down to our finish point in Neuch\u00e2tel.\u00a0<\/p><p>A proper adventure, then \u2013 at least, for a dyed-in-the-wool road cyclist like myself.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-waiting-to-spring-a-surprise\">Waiting to spring a surprise<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"8256\" height=\"5504\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/08\/BMC_URS_LAUNCH_2024_CHRISTOPHE_BAER-312.jpg\" alt=\"BMC URS 01 One being ridden by Ashley Quinlan\" class=\"wp-image-877820\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Despite a gravel bike&#8217;s design, a loose surface is always a small unknown. &#8211; BMC \/ Christophe Baer<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>One thing riders don\u2019t usually have to deal with on the road is a loose surface.<\/p><p>I can hear the protests from UK-based road cyclists from here, but perhaps the quality of my local roads is a topic for another day.<\/p><p>Given I prefer riding on beautifully paved roads, I sometimes find gravel riding a nerve-wracking experience, because the characteristics of the surface are uncertain from one moment to the next.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"8256\" height=\"5504\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/08\/BMC_URS_LAUNCH_2024_CHRISTOPHE_BAER-705.jpg\" alt=\"BMC URS AMP LT ridden by Ashley Quinlan\" class=\"wp-image-877883\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">This is by far my most natural terrain. &#8211; BMC \/ Christophe Baer<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>To me, there is little telling how much the ground will give way, at what point the tyre will bite, or if I\u2019ll encounter a hidden obstacle, such as a rock.\u00a0<\/p><p>Many people\u2019s natural response is to slow down, but this only serves to make me more nervous as I notice the ground subsiding ever more.\u00a0<\/p><p>On the opening tracks of my test ride in Switzerland, things were relatively wide and straightforward, but they were about to get a whole lot more tricky.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-feeling-overwhelmed-by-singletrack\">Feeling overwhelmed by singletrack<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1067\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/07\/Specialized-Epic-8-Pro-fast.jpg?fit=1024,1024\" alt=\"Female rider in blue top riding the Specialized Epic 8 Pro full suspension mountain bike\" class=\"wp-image-869925\" style=\"aspect-ratio:3\/2;object-fit:cover\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Singletrack offers few escape routes should you get it wrong. &#8211; Andy Lloyd \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Singletrack is often the preserve of the gnarliest mountain bikers. It&#8217;s challenging, I think, because one mistake can end in jeopardy.<\/p><p>For me, the biggest challenge is sensory overload \u2013 the information coming into my brain is coming too thick and fast to deal with \u2013 and most of it is totally irrelevant in the moment.<\/p><p>I don\u2019t need to know about the outcrop of bushes between the trees over there to my right, or the tree stump placed several metres off the riding line to the left. Nor do I need to realise there\u2019s a 90-degree turn 100 metres ahead just yet, thank you very much.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1067\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2023\/05\/Focus-Atlas-8.9-Carbon-15-90ce70a.jpg\" alt=\"Focus Atlas 8.9 Carbon gravel bike\" class=\"wp-image-731435\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">There&#8217;s a lot to process when you&#8217;re riding on gravel. &#8211; Russell Burton \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Fundamentally, I think this is a problem of focus, and I\u2019m sure I\u2019m not alone.<br\/><br\/>As you ride a singletrack trail, you need to have your focus on what lies ahead rather than the immediate space in front of you, or the terrain next to it.\u00a0<\/p><p>The fact is, I need to have already dealt with the immediate obstacle, while my brain is processing the information of what\u2019s to come and making decisions about how to act, before processing the next \u2018step\u2019, and so on.<\/p><p>I need to be able to filter out extraneous information \u2013 a problem ironically made more difficult when the width of the trail is restricted.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2400\" height=\"1600\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/05\/Gravel-race-kit-list-7.jpg\" alt=\"Wide angle shot of man riding Lauf Seigla on gravel track\" class=\"wp-image-865065\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Keeping to a chosen line can be harder than it appears. &#8211; Scott Windsor \/ Our Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Suddenly, trees, rocks and fences just off the trail (things I\u2019ve no business going anywhere near) seem to have Star Trek-like tractor beams, ready to ensnare me.<\/p><p>The speed at which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/C-pq604M-9e\/\">my colleague Luke Marshall (among others) can filter out all this noise<\/a>, for example, completely galls me.\u00a0<\/p><p>String a few corners together, though, and suddenly I feel like I\u2019m on cloud nine. Right until I misjudge that huge tree root, of course\u2026<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-we-re-going-up-that\">We\u2019re going up THAT?!<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"8256\" height=\"5504\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/08\/BMC_URS_LAUNCH_2024_CHRISTOPHE_BAER-468.jpg\" alt=\"BMC URS 01 One being ridden by Ashley Quinlan\" class=\"wp-image-877826\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">I find I need more of my available power to keep moving forward on a gravel climb. &#8211; BMC \/ Christophe Baer<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Take it from someone who likes climbing \u2013 it\u2019s so much harder on gravel than it is on the road.<\/p><p>Well-planned roads are usually designed in such a way that they temper the hill\u2019s gradient \u2013 it\u2019s why you\u2019ll find 21 hairpins on Alpe d\u2019Huez, for example.\u00a0<\/p><p>Gravel climbs tend to proceed more directly up a hillside, which, of course, can make them devilishly steep. The loose surface and treaded tyres combine to heighten rolling resistance, too.<\/p><p>But it\u2019s the lack of traction that really makes them tough.\u00a0<\/p><p>As you pedal, the rear tyre repeatedly grips up and loses it again, which means your effort is far spikier than on the road.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1067\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/08\/BMCURSLAUNCH.Scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Ashley Quinlan pushing his gravel bike on a wooded climb\" class=\"wp-image-878423\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">BMC \/ Christophe Baer<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Couple this with the urge to drive on to avoid unclipping (because it\u2019s almost impossible to get going again), and I find I end up putting in far bigger efforts than I\u2019d need to if I were on a smooth surface.<\/p><p>This is also made more challenging when you need to pick a line on a rocky path \u2013 suddenly, your concentration is split, which makes applying it to both even more challenging.<\/p><p>That said, get it right and make it all the way to the top without stopping, and you can pat yourself on the back for a job well done.\u00a0<\/p><p>Get it wrong (and you will), and you need the patience of a zen master as you pick the bike up and start hiking.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-nightmares-filled-with-rocks\">Nightmares filled with rocks<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/author\/katherine-moore\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"4683\" height=\"3122\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2021\/09\/22-07-20-WTB-Riddler-SG2-Protection-Rider-Shots-103-6c6966b.jpg\" alt=\"Katherine Moore riding a gravel bike on a rocky trail\" class=\"wp-image-647808\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">I don&#8217;t know what our esteemed contributor Katherine Moore is so cheerful about \u2013 this surface looks awful. &#8211; WTB<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Above all else, I dislike rocks (sorry, geologists). Especially when they\u2019re littered on a descent, in my path.<br\/><br\/>They get in the way, offer completely unknown levels of grip, disrupt any gain in speed, and generally disturb what our mountain bike team might call \u201cflow\u201d.<\/p><p>Given you can\u2019t move them, you\u2019re forced to either find a path between them, or ride straight over them.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/08\/BMC_URS_LAUNCH_2024_CHRISTOPHE_BAER-399_32-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Ashley Quinlan walking down a rocky gravel path with his gravel bike\" class=\"wp-image-878378\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">There&#8217;s no shame in getting off and walking until you&#8217;ve found something more manageable. &#8211; BMC \/ Christophe Baer<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>But each one offers a little nugget of adrenaline \u2013 like the kind you get with each twist of a horror movie.<\/p><p>As I (slowly, I will admit) threaded the needle, or rode up and over the unavoidable obstacles, each little spike of success goaded me into taking on the next challenge.<\/p><p>This, of course, is far from risk-free \u2013 every now and then, a pause to take a breath (having held it for a solid 30 seconds or more) is highly recommended.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-see-it-s-all-fun-really\">See? It\u2019s all fun really<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/08\/BMC_URS_LAUNCH_2024_CHRISTOPHE_BAER-602_32-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Man riding a gravel bike in a field with mountain backdrop\" class=\"wp-image-878380\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Yes, there are challenges, but the rewards are plentiful. &#8211; BMC \/ Christophe Baer<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The reality is, although I\u2019m not yet bursting to launch myself off sheer drops and over jumps like my MTB colleagues, gravel riding is fun.<\/p><p>In my local area, I can stick largely to easier, known routes when testing any kind of bike (it\u2019s far easier to compare when more things are equal). However, my experience in the Swiss Jura has opened my eyes to pushing my technical ability more.<\/p><p>The sense of achievement is real, even if you live by your wits for much of the journey.
