It has a 10-51t profile, giving it a wide 510 per cent range. It uses the brand\u2019s Hyperglide+ tooth design.\u00a0<\/p><p>The SLX cassette, on the other hand, features an aluminium 51t cassette sprocket, denoted by a black hardening treatment. The remaining 11 cogs are steel.<\/p><p>Both cassettes use Shimano\u2019s Microspline freehub standard, making them compatible with the rest of the brand\u2019s 12-speed range but incompatible with older HG freehub bodies.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-cranksets\">Cranksets<\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"6000\" height=\"4000\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2021\/05\/Shimano-SLX-M7100-mountain-bike-groupset-21-08393cb.jpg\" alt=\"Shimano SLX M7100 mountain bike groupset\" class=\"wp-image-630812\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The more expensive SLX cranks get Shimano&#8217;s weight-saving HollowTech technology. &#8211; Alex Evans<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The latest Deore cranks don&#8217;t use Shimano\u2019s long-standing HollowTech technology, where the crank arms are forged as two hollow pieces and bonded together. Instead, they use a forged construction with a reinforced rear to save weight while retaining strength.<\/p><p>The Shimano SLX crankset features Hollowtech II technology (shared with Shimano&#8217;s premium XT and XTR groupsets). This is an upgrade over the Deore cranks according to Shimano. It claims the technology improves stiffness, while reducing overall weight.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-gear-range\">Gear range<\/h3><p>Both drivetrains feature 10-51t cassettes with identical ratios. This means they have a 510 per cent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/mountain-bike-gears\/\">gear range<\/a>, putting them right up there with the best 1&#215;12 drivetrains.\u00a0<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-brakes\">Brakes<\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1067\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2021\/07\/Shimano-SLX-M7120-disc-brakes-01-1448880.jpg\" alt=\"Shimano SLX M7120 disc brakes for mountain bikes\" class=\"wp-image-639899\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Shimano SLX stoppers benefit from a tool-free reach adjuster, whereas the Deore version requires a small hex key. &#8211; Russell Burton \/ Immediate Media<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Both Deore and SLX groupsets give you the choice between two- and four-piston <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-mountain-bike-disc-brakes\">brakes<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p><p>The twin-piston brakes shave a bit of weight and bulk by sacrificing some braking power over the quad-piston versions, which offer maximum braking performance.<\/p><p>The internals of both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/components\/brakes\/disc-brake-systems\/shimano-deore-br-m6000-brakes-review\">Deore<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/components\/brakes\/disc-brake-systems\/shimano-slx-m7120-disc-brakes-review\">SLX<\/a> brakes are largely similar, with the main difference being the reach adjuster. The more affordable Deore lever gets a tooled reach adjuster, whereas the more expensive SLX has a tool-free version.\u00a0<\/p><p>Both sets of brakes miss out on Shimano\u2019s Free Stroke adjustment, which enables you to adjust the amount of brake-lever travel before the pads contact the rotor.\u00a0<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-compatibility-nbsp\">Compatibility\u00a0<\/h3><p>Because these groupsets share so many common features, Deore M6100 components get along well with SLX M7100 components.
