Swiss startup Jespr releases first model with \u2018always on\u2019 internet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\">The Jespr is one of three bike computers from small brands set to launch this September <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Stan Portus\n      <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Thursday, 12 September 2024 at 11:00 AM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>The bike computer market is arguably sewn up, with Wahoo and Garmin ruling the roost and only Hammerhead and Bryton making serious inroads.\u00a0<\/p><p>But Swiss startup Jespr is the latest in a string of brands to release bike computers packed with slick data visualisation, stylish designs, high-quality mapping and features that even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/garmin-edge-bike-computers-buyers-guide-to-all-the-models\">Garmin\u2019s Edge bike computer range<\/a> lacks.\u00a0<\/p><p>Jespr says its bike computer, available from today, is the first to provide an \u2018always on\u2019 internet connection via an internal SIM card to make \u201ctethering to your phone a thing of the past\u201d.<\/p><p>The brand says this tech will provide \u201congoing navigation\u201d and wind data information while you ride, but it\u2019s also part of Jespr\u2019s aim to make its bike computer as easy to use as possible.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Clarity and simplicity<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Jespr says its bike computer has a \u201cclear-eyed\u201d interface. &#8211; Jespr<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Jespr says its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-bike-computers\">bike computer<\/a> features a large, high-resolution display and a \u201cclear-eyed\u201d interface to help you quickly read metrics without taking your eyes off the road.<\/p><p>This is similar to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/news\/absolute-one-cycling-computer\">Absolute One bike computer<\/a> we spotted at Eurobike 2024, which features a Gorilla Glass screen and is said to have a similar resolution to the screens used on top-spec smartphones.\u00a0<\/p><p>Like the Absolute One, Jespr emphasises its computer\u2019s advanced mapping and navigation capabilities.\u00a0<\/p><p>The Jespr computer will automatically re-route you, send you course notifications, detect climbs and provide a topographical view, alongside telling you wind information.<\/p><p>Jespr says its computer \u201cblends a next-generation navigation experience with a whole new way of contextualising the ride\u201d.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ride modes\u00a0<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1067\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/09\/Jespr_Campaign23_22781.jpg\" alt=\"Man riding bike with Jespr bike computer.\" class=\"wp-image-880211\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">You will be able to select ride modes dependent on activity type. &#8211; Jespr<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>You can select different bikes and types of riding to the Jespr computer, which will then tailor what information it shows. The startup says you can use the computer for road and trail riding, triathlons and more.\u00a0<\/p><p>Jespr says it has developed specific ride modes in partnership with professional athletes and coaches.\u00a0<\/p><p>While it hasn\u2019t gone into lots of detail just yet, Jespr has specified four ride modes:\u00a0<\/p><ul><li>Free Ride Mode<\/li><li>Direction Mode<\/li><li>Training Mode<\/li><li>Race Mode<\/li><\/ul><p>It says Free Ride Mode offers spontaneity, while Direction Mode has \u201cpleasing\u201d animations.\u00a0<\/p><p>Training Mode offers \u201cpower-focused metrics\u201d and Race Mode has \u201cpared-down screens\u201d.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Connectivity and estimated power<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1066\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/09\/Jespr_Cycling_Computer_Design.jpg\" alt=\"Jespr bike computer graphic showing it mounted on handlebar.\" class=\"wp-image-880214\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The computer will connect to a power meter, but it can also estimate power output. &#8211; Jespr<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Jespr says its computer connects \u201cseamlessly\u201d with ride sensors, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/fitness-and-training\/how-to-choose-a-heart-rate-monitor\">heart rate monitors<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-power-meters\">power meters<\/a>.<\/p><p>Many will expect this functionality from a bike computer, but Jespr says its computer can also derive and estimate live power output values from other ride data.<\/p><p>The computer can also connect with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/bike-rearview-radars\">bicycle radars<\/a> to show approaching traffic on the display.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Over-the-air synchronisation<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1066\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/09\/Jespr_Cycling_Computer_Control.jpg\" alt=\"Jespr bike computer held in hand with routes displayed on screen.\" class=\"wp-image-880213\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The computer is compatible with the likes of Strava and Komoot. &#8211; Jespr<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>This new device is supported by the my.Jespr.io platform, which facilitates over-the-air route and training plan synchronisation.<\/p><p>Jespr says its platform and computer are compatible with \u201call of the major players\u201d including Strava, TrainingPeaks and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/guide-to-using-komoot\">Komoot<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1066\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/09\/Jespr_Cycling_Computer_Tech_Specs.jpg\" alt=\"Jespr bike computer graphic showing depth of 25mm, width of 69.5mm and height of 122mm.\" class=\"wp-image-880216\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The computer measures 69.5x122x25mm. &#8211; Jespr<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Your custom settings are synced to the Jespr platform, too. This means if you get a new Jespr device it can be set up just like your last one.\u00a0<\/p><p>Jespr says this synchronisation tech means software updates \u201cbeam to the device automatically, without the hassles typical of other devices.\u201d\u00a0<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Free data for the first users<\/h2><p>Jespr says its bike computer is available from today and it will cost \u20ac570 \/ CHF540.\u00a0<\/p><p>To welcome you to the Jespr platform, Jespr says its first customers will receive a free data plan for the \u2018always on\u2019 internet until the end of 2025.<\/p><p>After that, a subscription model starts, estimated to cost \u20ac5 per month.\u00a0<\/p><p>While you can add a SIM to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/training\/gps-computers\/cycle-computers\/hammerhead-karoo-2-bike-computer-review\">Hammerhead Karoo 2<\/a> for a data internet connection, the Jespr is the first bike computer to have one built in. <\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The year of challenger brands?\u00a0<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1067\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/09\/Jespr_Campaign23_23367.jpg\" alt=\"Man posing with bike and looking at Jespr bike computer.\" class=\"wp-image-880212\" style=\"width:840px;height:auto\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Jespr is one of three bike computers from small brands set to launch this September. &#8211; Jespr<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Jespr\u2019s bike computer is one of three from small brands to launch this September.<\/p><p>Absolute Cycling\u2019s Phil Lucas told us the Absolute One would be released this month, after it launched its crowdfunding campaign for the computer back in 2019.\u00a0<\/p><p>The Trimm Two is another bike computer expected to be released this month.\u00a0<\/p><p>While the Absolute One and Jespr have colour displays, the Trimm Two has a monochrome display, similar to older Wahoo bike computers. But like these other challenger brands it promises a sharp, high-quality display for easy viewing.\u00a0<\/p><p>One aspect of its new computer that Trimm stresses is its looks.
