Follow My Challenge<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Wilcox averaged around 166 miles \/ 267 kilometres per day, at roughly 14.5mph \/ 23.3kph, according to SRAM (one of her key sponsors).<\/p><p>To fuel this monstrous effort, Wilcox said she consumed \u201cbetween 6,000 to 8,000 calories\u201d per day (although she notes \u201cI\u2019ve lost a little weight, but not too much\u201d).<\/p><p>Setting out from Chicago on 26 May, Wilcox headed East towards New York, before flying to Portugal and riding across Europe to Tbilisi in Georgia.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"8192\" height=\"5464\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/09\/LaelWilcoxAround-the-World.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-880610\" style=\"aspect-ratio:3\/2;object-fit:cover\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Wilcox averaged an extraordinary 166 miles \/ 267 kilometres per day.<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>From there, Wilcox flew to Perth in Australia, rode to Brisbane and crossed over to New Zealand to ride from Invercargill in the South to Auckland in the North.<\/p><p>The final leg of Wilcox\u2019s ride saw her fly to Anchorage in Alaska, where she followed the west coast of America down to Los Angeles before heading cross-country and back to Chicago.<\/p><p>Her wife, photojournalist Rugile (Rue) Kaladyte, supported her throughout the journey, logging distances and documenting the ride along the way.<\/p><p>Speaking to <em>The Guardian<\/em> in mid-July, halfway through her attempt, Wilcox said: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/lifeandstyle\/article\/2024\/jul\/21\/lael-wilcox-interview-cyclist-circumnavigate-globe\">\u201cEvery day is like a marathon, and then I go to sleep and do it all again.\u201d<\/a><\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/09\/AroundtheWorldDay78.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-880609\" style=\"aspect-ratio:3\/2;object-fit:cover\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Breaking the record meant long days on the bike, over and over again.<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Counterintuitively, Wilcox said her toughest day on the bike came early during this attempt, on day four: \u201cI was throwing up all day, it never stopped raining and I was getting multiple punctures.\u201d<\/p><p>Perhaps proving that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/long-reads\/women-ultra-endurance-cycling\">women do make the best ultra-endurance cyclists<\/a>, she \u201cstill rode 139 miles\u201d, although she admits that day \u201cwas a tough one\u201d.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lael Wilcox\u2019s Around The World record bike<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1366\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/09\/Lael-WIlcox_Strava_01_Rugile-Kaladyte.jpg\" alt=\"Lael WIlcox at the finish of her Around The World record attempt\" class=\"wp-image-880568\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Lael WIlcox used a Specialized Roubaix SL8 to break the record. &#8211; Rugile Kaladyte<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>In contrast to her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/pro-bike\/lael-wilcox-corvus-akio-fat-bike\">snow and ice-focused bike setup<\/a> for the 500km Iditarod Trail Invitational in Alaska, Wilcox opted for an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-endurance-road-bikes\">endurance road bike<\/a> for the Around The World record attempt.<\/p><p>The frameset comes courtesy of Specialized, with Wilcox picking the latest Roubaix SL8 model.<\/p><p>Notably, Wilcox appears to be riding the slightly cheaper and heavier Fact 10R carbon frameset, rather than the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/bikes\/road-bikes\/specialized-s-works-roubaix-sl8-first-ride-review\">lighter (and pricier) S-Works model<\/a>.<\/p><p>We don\u2019t know for certain, but we&#8217;d speculate that the cheaper model may be slightly more durable, given that expensive, high-modulus <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/bike-frame-materials\">carbon fibre<\/a> tends to be more brittle (it\u2019s for this reason bike brands don\u2019t use different types of carbon fibre across different parts of a frame or component, for example).<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024\/09\/2024AroundtheWorld.jpg\" alt=\"Lael Wilcox Around the World record\" class=\"wp-image-880604\" style=\"aspect-ratio:3\/2;object-fit:cover\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Wilcox&#8217;s bike setup focused on speed and comfort over long distances. &#8211; SRAM<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Her drivetrain was top-of-the-range, though, with SRAM supplying its new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/reviews\/components\/groupsets\/groupset-road\/sram-red-axs-review\">Red AXS groupset<\/a>, along with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/advice\/buyers-guides\/best-power-meters\">power meter<\/a> crankset.<\/p><p>The power meter may have been useful to help Wilcox track her calorific output, so she could eat accordingly, for example.
