In 2022, peat free products have never been so important. Compost is used for all kinds of jobs in the garden, so finding the right one is really important. We provide a selection of the best sustainable compost solutions on the market.

What is compost?

Compost is a mixture of organic matter used as a growing medium in pots and to fertilise and improve garden soil. It is made up of decomposed plants and food scraps and is rich in the nutrients needed for plant growth. There are hundreds of different kinds on the market, so it can be hard to work out what the best compost is. Firstly, it is important to know what the different types of compost are and consider what you will be using it for.

What are the different types of compost?

Traditionally, many composts were made using peat. Peat comes from peatlands, which are an important carbon store and habitat.  The extraction and use of peat is very damaging to the environment, so now it is more common for gardeners to opt for peat free alternatives. Peat free compost can be made of a range of different materials such as composted bark, coir and green compost mixed with grit or sand. There are also different types of compost mixes for different gardening jobs. For potting up plants, sowing seeds and general garden tasks a peat free multi-purpose might suffice. There are also speciality mixes for different gardening jobs and we have summed up some of the best composts for these below.
