The festival, which runs from 2 to 7 July 2024 is focusing its themes on gardening for wildlife as well as international inspiration and significant anniversaries – including the 60th anniversary of RHS Britain in Bloom.
Father and son garden design duo Jon and James Wheatley will be creating Gardening for People and Planet, which commemorates the anniversary of Britain in Bloom – the UK’s biggest community gardening competition. It will feature bee hives as well as native and British grown plants.
Juliet Sargeant, also a regular designer at Chelsea Flower Show, will be creating a garden to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Disney’s The Lion King in the West End. The Lion King Anniversary Garden will feature the colours of the African savannah alongside resilient grasses and vibrant drought tolerant flowers.
In the Get Started Garden category, The Climate-Forward Garden, designed by Melanie Hick, takes inspiration from the Australian bush and imagines what a UK front garden could be like as a climate conscious green space. Also on the theme of resilient planting, The Mediterraneo Garden will be designed by Katerine Kantalis and draws on the gardening traditions of Greece. The Way of Saint James garden aims to capture the mystical essence of Galicia’s forests and create habitats for wildlife.
A tennis court green will be featured in Oliver Bond’s garden, which will include green, purple and white planting with nectar rich plants, while Tim Jennings and Giada Francois promote biodiversity in A Four Season Sanctuary. A pond will be featured to demonstrate the value they provide to wildlife.
Manager of RHS Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival Natalie Gearing said “There is such a variety of ideas at this year’s festival, from bringing gardening traditions of other countries to the classically British setting of Hampton Court Palace, to celebrating anniversaries of beloved institutions through garden design. There will be inspiration to suit all styles, abilities, and garden size.”
