Cropping up everywhere from small urban gardens to a large central London roof terrace, it is hugely popular with garden designers and landscape architects. Furniture from the range has appeared in gardens that have been designed by top designers such as Tom Stuart-Smith, Miria Harris, Colm Joseph, Stefano Marinaz and Farlam & Chandler.
Designed by French brothers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec for the contemporary Danish brand HAY, the Palissade range has proved to be an instant classic. Reminiscent of the seating in a Parisian park, it is made from weather-proof powder coated steel.
The tables, benches, tree benches, chairs, chaise longues, sofas and stools come in varying sizes and four different colourways (Anthracite, Sky Grey, Olive and Iron Red). The tables are available in rectangular and square designs.
As the furniture is weatherproof and designed to stand the test of time, it can be left outside all year round and in all weathers – a big plus where storage space is limited. The chairs and armchairs are also stackable.
The individual pieces are compact, so can squeeze easily onto terraces, patios and balconies, but also look at home in larger gardens. The classic yet contemporary look means that the range looks good in modern and traditional gardens, and in rural or urban settings.
Designer Stefano Marinaz has used Hay Palissade furniture in several of his gardens. “It is nice light furniture to move around, with a modern and simple design,” he says. “I particularly like the fact that it doesn’t block the view of the garden, as you can see through it. You can notice its presence without it being visually too heavy.”
